"The Thin Red Line" (1998, directed by Terrence Malick) is one of the most notable anti-war movies. Beside of being a moving story focused on personal tragedies of soldiers on both sides, it's also a beautiful conjunction of picture and music.
In my opinion "TRL" is the best Hans Zimmer's composition. Unfortunately, the official release of the soundtrack didn't include some bits from the movie.
0:00 : The melody in the beginning of the film, ordinary life of the Melanesian people (film version of "Requiem, Op. 48: In Paradisum" by Gabriel Fauré)
1:57 : Pvt. Witt in the village (Jisas yu holem hand blong mi - instrumental version)
3:17 : Chat between Witt and Welsh (God yu tekkem laef blong mi - instrumental version)
5:05 : Death of Pvt. Witt
This clip is just a presentation of unreleased film music. Tracks have background SFX, and screens are in low resolution. All rights belong to 20th Century Fox.
----
"Cienka czerwona linia" (1998, reż.: Terrence Malick) to jeden z najbardziej wybinych filmów antywojennych. Oprócz bycia poruszającą historią osobistych tragedii żołnierzy po obu stronach konfliktu, jest to piękne połączenie obrazu i muzyki.
Moim zdaniem, "Cienka czerwona linia" jest najlepszą partyturą Hansa Zimmera. Niestety, oficjalne wydanie ścieżki dźwiękowej nie zawierało kilku fragmentów obecnych w filmie.
0:00 : Melodia na początku filmu, codzienne życie Melanezyjczyków (filmowa wersja "Requiem, Op. 48: In Paradisum" Gabriela Fauré)
1:57 : Szer. Witt w wiosce (Jisas yu holem hand blong mi - wersja instrumentalna)
3:17 : Rozmowa Witta i Welsha (God yu tekkem laef blong mi - wersja instrumentalna)
5:05 : Śmierć szer. Witta
Filmik ten jest jedynie prezentacją niewydanej muzyki z filmu. Ścieżka dźwiękowa zawiera efekty dźwiękowe tła, a screeny są w niskiej rozdzielczości. Wszystkie prawa należą do 20th Century Fox.

When I was in Vietnam, I had a very close friend. His name was Brendan. He had the "beautiful light" about him too. We all could see it in him. Whenever we had time we would go with him to a orphanage run by French nuns. There would we see how war destroyed these young childrens lives. These were the happiest times for me while I was their. Though we were all only nineteen years old, Brendan was much older than us in his heart, and in his thinking. Like Witt, he never let his friends or fellow soldiers down. He left us in June 1969. Now he is on the wall for all time....He was a warrior, and a poet. Now in my 60s, I still think of him often, and go see his name whenever I am in Washington...I watch this movie many times during the year, and it always makes me smile, and cry to think of my good friend...

Charles hesse "There would we see how war destroyed these young childrens lives. These were the happiest times for me while I was their." I know that was not the intent, but it sounds a bit assholish.

"I might be the best friend you ever had. You don't even know it." WELSH "Why are you such a trouble maker, Witt?" WITT "You care about me, don't you, sarge, I always felt like you did. Why do you always make yourself out like a rock? One day I can come up and talk to you and the next day it's like we never even met." (pause) "Lonely house now. You ever get lonely?" WELSH "Only around people." WITT (softer) "Only around people." WELSH "You still believing in the beautiful light, are you? How do you do that? You're a magician to me." WITT "I still see a spark in you." -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- "We. We together. One being. Flow together like water. Till I can't tell you from me. I drink you. Now. Now." "This great evil--where's it come from? How'd it steal into the world? What seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doing this? Who's killing us, robbing us of life and light, mocking us with the sight of what we mighta known? Does our ruin benefit the earth, aid the grass to grow and the sun to shine? Is this darkness in you too? Have you passed through this night?" "We were a family. How'd it break up and come apart so that now we're turned against each other, each standing in the other's light? How'd we lose the good that was given us, let it slip away, scattered, careless? What's keeping us from reaching out, touching the glory?" Sorry i cant write in english my deep Thougth...

I was in the army (compulsory service) when in a break from marching, shooting and being shouted at, I went to watch this movie. It helped me reconnect with my inner self. It saved me from even further brain-wash from the army. I used to spend many hours marching, sometimes even 13! And I remember the only time I felt I was spending some valuable time was when I had "endless" thoughts meaningful things of life, ideas and memories, creating a vision for my future. My body had to respond to all the orders but in the end the only thing they couldn't control was my mind. I had to be a soldier, against my will but they couldn't break me. I came out stronger and a better person, learning more about the madness that sometimes, somehow, affects army operations and the people involved. I connected to most of the soldiers in this movie too, knowing they were there because of the circumstances. They would find peace in the fainted ray of the morning light. Don't give up.

I think the film shows that we yearn not to be violent, not to brutalize each other and ourselves. But that it is in our deepest flawed nature to war with one another. That is the darkest part of our nature. And we desperately want to be whole, intact and in grace. Love. But we are not that way. There's a profound yearning for spiritual release and connection but they are bound to the horrible process of destruction. But in this life, we see can see grace for a moment. Even in hell.

It really is a crime that this music was not released as this soundtrack was arguably the best orchestral work Zimmer has ever composed. While the CD recording was great, the last four minutes of this are absolute Zimmer gold. Thank for posting this. Personally, next to the final fight music from Last of the Mohicans, and the synthesized score by Vince DiCola in Rocky 4, this was the most desired unreleased music I can recall.

The Thin Red Line is more of a movie that grows on someone over time. I Think Saving Private Ryan is easier to digest your first time watching it while TTRL took me a few viewings not to be lost. Saving Private Ryan is a good movie, but it is hardly one of my favorites while I would put TTRL up in my top 6 favorite movies (Local Hero, The Big Lebowski, Lost In Translation, Sunshine, and Jackie Brown.)

doughboycod2 I deeply love both but I will go for The Thin Red Line because it's not an usual movie and I love it's spitituality. Like you said, TTRL is hard first to watch, when I was a kid I thought I was gonna see another typical war movie so I was a little confused first but I kept watching it and loving it for how it was meant and now it's one of my top 10 movies of all time.

@JordoSummach ...I don't think he really wanted to die either, but instead sacrificed himself for his friends and comrades. This is without a doubt, one of the best movies about war that has ever been made, as it shows the personal and emotional side of the men who have to fight in a war. As a christian man, it was refreshing to see another portrayed so well as in Pvt Witt's character, a true shining example of God's love for us.

General Schwarzkopf said it best: "Any Soldier worth his salt should be antiwar and yet, there are still things worth fighting for" Going to war doesn't always mean you're a war monger.
