I thought I was too old to cry at movies. The movie is a masterpiece.

That look in Witt’s eyes when he knows he’s going to die. He doesn’t fight it, he accepts it and like all of us, there’s the look of momentary surprise that THIS is it.

Jim Caviezel is one of the most underrated actors in my opinion. Guy deserved an Oscar for this film.

So powerful. Possibly the greatest movie ever ever made.

I listened to this song when my partner of three years parted ways with me. After feeling bitter and angry for a few days, I then listened to this music and remembered all the beautiful and happy times we had together. I reminded myself that life can be beautiful and we should treasure the beauty in our lives.

I think about this scene a lot, wondering if at the time of death I'll be granted the moment to pause and see that this is really it. That I'm about to disappear or go elsewhere. I just hope that when that time comes, there isn't too much regret in my heart.

The Thin Red Line is not just the greatest WW2 film ever made but also the greatest war film of all time. It's amazingly powerful and emotional that it truly touches the soul and that's the type of masterpiece that is really special. I can't think of another war film that has had such a profound effect on me both spiritually and mentally.

It saddens me that people overall cited Inception, Dark Knight or Interstellar as Zimmer's best work... In my opinion, The Thin Red Line is the most beautiful and breathtaking score Zimmer ever composed... I prefer this one over Time any time

This is the perfect music for the character. So right for the scene. It connects us with the Witt's paradise seen in the opening scenes. Very emotional and maybe the key scene in the whole movie. This is based on a traditional Malesian song (from the beginning of the film), which Klaus Badelt has arranged for the orchestra. It is not by Hans Zimmer or Badelt.

This is my absolute favorite movie!

My favourite movie of all time. I could see parts of me in all three main characters. Brilliant acting, brilliant character philosophy. Gripping and sad. I wonder if the other characters the movie depicted from the book survived the war.

I play this music sometimes and close my eyes. I have flash-backs of my own just like the ones Witt has when he gets shot. I'm swimming in the Adriatic sea, the water is fresh and the wind is chilling, and when I turn around I can see my friends laughing. I want to go back to shore but I can't move, because this scene is so pretty. It's such a pure memory. I'm so glad this movie exists. It's one of a kind.

Great piece, this movie and the score speak volumes to me. I continue to admire Saving Private Ryan generally speaking but as a modern day combat veteran, although our experiences can never compare to that of these men, I honestly think that this movie has a lot more to offer. I think about my experiences and simultaneously play the score in my head. Sometimes I don’t know what to think, I guess that at least and for the moment, I feel at ease with myself, or at peace, while listening to this!

This goes straight to the soul. Everything on this song connects with the deepest and most espiritual meaning of my life.

I fell in love with this movie back in 1998 when it came out. I remember not too long after it came out in theatres back when you had to have them old cable boxes HBO had it on they're rotation and I remember as a 9 year old boy just watching and rewatching this movie! The music and the way the film portrays the realness of combat is what makes it stand out above all other war movies I've seen! All star cast and just great scenes!

We had to put our family dog, Lenora, to sleep, and after we buried her, I went inside and played this song, and the years we're falling. Burying a beloved pet is like burying a loved one.

I have just re-watched the movie and was drawn by light and darkness's role in it. After Witt's death, there is a shot of light flowing down from the darkened roof of the jungle. Whereas after a battle scene, there is shot of light shining through pierced leaves which follows scenes of men showed in the vulnerability that war brings upon them. Or another when the company is about to move back into battle and the roof of the jungle is showed again but without any light getting through. I think that Terrence wanted, in his way, to give us a glimpse of what this "Truth" is insofar as it is shewed by the effects of war on our nature. Men's spirits, after battle, become crippled and numb. Nature doesn't vie against itself, but men do. Butterflies roam the battlefield, the scenery... as wonderful as ever. Nature isn't shown as chaotic, but peaceful in the heart of the battlefield. Nature is calm, such as Witt before his death. Darkness is only the wounds caused by the barbarian killing of war, and the unconsciousness that arises through contact with such inhuman behavior. This state of unconsciousness only results in more pain inflicted : because we become numb to the acts of savagery we are asked to perpetrate.

It is hard to get the image of Caviezel of Christ out of my mind -- this film preceded Passion by six years, and I saw them in their proper chronological order -- but there's something greater than the sum of its parts here, when Pvt. Witt reaches some inner peaceful decision and chooses to "transcend." It's hard to put into words. Almost like he takes the sun, and the sand, and the swimming schoolchildren into himself, realizing his life is at an end, and makes that (sun, sand, swim) his final moment. Maybe I'm just stating the obvious, but it jumped right out of the theater for me. Made me wonder if I could do similarly, when my time came (car crash, deathbed, illness, etc.).

Just finished the James Jones source novel and the beginning and the last forty minutes of the film are totally different , but the majority of the film follows the book fairly close except the Elias Koates character is named differently. The book starts a little slow but once the soldiers reach the island and the battle gets going it becomes compelling reading. I am not normally into war movies but neither the book nor the film glorify or romantisizes war and this not some John Wayne guts and glory wet dream. Horrible things happen to the characters.....and they do horrible things. Isn't there a line in the film (although not in the book) where a character (perhaps Witt) who says how war reduces people to animals? I had a grandfather who fought in WW 2 and refuses to talk about his experiences. I cannot even imagine. I grow to appreciate The Thin Red Line with each viewing (I have probably seen it four or five times now in its entirity) but I still feel it drags once they have captured the hill and there is still a good thirty to forty minutes to go. The book also suffers from this anti-climactic element but it moves ago and sustains interest in the characters.....who those who have survived the battle. What surprised me was the language in the book. It was published in 1960 and censorship was still stronge. Anyone who enjoys the film should read the book.....very highly recommended, but does not have much of the philosophical ponderings as in the film.

I found this scene far too emotional to accept. It upset me so much as to the naivety of the character.

Ive got this sentimental feelings with this movie especially with Prvt Witt.....coz my Grandfather was in the 1st Malay Regiment that fought the Japanese Imperial Army during the WW2 Japanese occupation in Malaya.....My Gand with his small company of the Malay Regiment were dug in Bukit Timah...defending Singapore...along side the lagendary Lt Adnan. Most if not ALL, of his company mates fell ...but they did not surrendered to the Japanese, they hold their position to he last men....wave after wave the japanese came and they manage to hold Bukit Timah with small gourp of men...but when bullets were out, rifles were hot, bullets stuck, men died and wounded...they still fought untill they were "Captured"... The Japanese were very furious because many of their soldiers were killed....So they tied the remaining Malay regiment and hang them on the trees and bayoneted to them death.......... "No Surrender"...No Surrender! ..my Grand was one of them.

The annoying thing about this film, it was like platoon a thinking persons film and the same year Saving Private Ryan came out which was just a flag wavy load of BS. TTRL ws a deep film had a list of great actors and was overlooked because it wasn't the feel good film. Such a shame this should have won ALL the awards that year

This is the film Mel Gibson said he was watching when he realized he wanted Jim Caviesal to play Jesus in "The Passion of the Christ". He was really awesome in this film. It was a bit talky and pretentious, but aren't all of Mallick's films? Still, the soundtrack is beautiful.
