Hi everyone, thanks for watching! What's something you've reluctantly given up on after realizing it just doesn't work for you personally?

Most t-shirts, for sure! That one was a revelation for me because (like you with the moto jackets) I used to LOVE tees. I lived in them--hardly ever wore anything else. But I've gotten older, my lifestyle has changed, and--this is a big part--I've gotten more comfortable in things that look more "styled." (I think maybe I was sort of hiding before.) I will still wear the occasional t-shirt when exercising or just puttering around the house, but they aren't a huge part of my style anymore.

I gave up on wearing jeans too. I mostly wear dresses and skirts now, but for pants I usually wear linen pants. I think they look really nice, but they are more comfortable than any other pants.

"sexy" clothes from a male point of view 🙈 My husband used to tell me that I have a great body, and that I should enjoy wearing revealing outfits so I don't feel like I've missed out later on. I liked the clothes but everytime I would go out I would end up tucking on my skirt or putting my top back in place every 5 seconds. I finally managed to figure out that his definition of sexy wasn't mine, and that I didn't enjoy wearing it 😅

You’re still very young, your taste will keep changing over time. I’m 61 and most women my age would agree with me. The only thing that hasn’t changed for me is my love of quality, natural fiber fabrics and good construction.

Oh yes! 48 here! My style changed over the years but what I always have loved are: Levi's 501, Breton Tops, lace up boots and over all the colours navy and grey🥰 I have a lot of garments for decades now (but I am not a few pieces capsule person, so I don't wear everything constantly) when I was young, I herited lots of jewellery from my mum and granny. All gold, diamonds, some quite chunky. I hated gold and have worn just silver pieces. For a couple of years I am all into gold jewellery now and I'm soooo glad that a kept the gold jewellery - I love to wear most of the things and it would be extremely expensive to buy them today. And I love to wear mum's and granny's pieces 🥰

The great thing is that she is talking about shapes and colors. And once you find what fits well, you don't change that a lot. Also, the core of my style hasn't change much since I was 8 honestly. Black and white plus sneakers :D

As a mid-40's myself, I will say that while the essence of your personal style may not change much, you will probably shift some things in and out of your wardrobe over time. What looks great on a young person may not look great on an older person - and vice versa. And while you don't need to adhere strictly to trends, you do want to look current - so shapes may change some too. I've personally seen bootcuts and flares come in/go out/ and now come back in style.

Finally someone who says what I have been thinking! T-shirts are always recommended as basics, but for someone like myself who has a big bust you end up looking sloppy and fat. I also totally agree about polyester, but it is very hard to find silky items that are not polyester. I buy it in skirts but never as tops or dresses. It is so uncomfortable.
@edennis8578

It could be the t-shirts you're buying. My bra size is 44G and I wear a lot of t-shirts, but they are strictly made for women, not unisex, and I buy a size up from the recommendations on the size charts because I don't like a tight fit. I also make sure that the t-shirts have good body to the fabric, not thin. Cotton-spandex blends are often best because they aren't too drapey and hold their shape. I prefer elbow-length sleeves because shorter sleeves just don't have the panache. Also, navy and black are great colors for making less of your bust while looking more chic.

Basics are very personal I believe! I don't think that anybody should follow the same "list of basics" because it just makes absolutely no sense. Every body type and personal preference is so different so if t-shirts are a clear no for you why make them work for no reason other then other people preferring them as a so called basic. Do what ever you like, the diversity of taste is great!

Giving up prints has been one of the best decisions I've ever made! I grow tired of prints very quickly when they are in my everyday wardrobe. I do still enjoy prints in my outerwear and handbags, but I try to stick to classics like houndstooth, windowpane plaid, basic stripes etc.

I am 100% with you on not wearing intricate flowy tops. Especially ones with lace detail. I see them on Sezane a lot and they're pretty to look at but overtime I've realized that just because something looks good on the hanger doesn't mean it'll look good on me. I always feel like I'm dressing up like some Victorian child and feel juvenile when I wear them. I look much better in structured minimal tops.

What I really love about this video is you clearly understand your body and accept it. You’re not hung up on the things you can’t wear, or how you look in them, you simply accept that it’s not for you and focus on what you feel confident in.

I related to all of this so much! I’m glad the more minimalist area of fashion youtube is expanding beyond the “white t shirt, white button down shirt, black blazer, white adidas sneaker….” bible of dressing. I found a woman from Australia (augh can’t remember the name of her channel now …) who realized she didn’t like the all black and grey and navy thing and ditched them for an entirely different pallet, softer textures, etc. It’s not my own style but I watch her because I love her confidence and her creativity and her whole approach to clothing. I love sneakers and would live in them exclusively if I could figure out how to (well, and a good chunky boot) but I just loved that you decided, “Nah, not for me, thanks.”! Letting go of things that just won’t ever work for you is such a radical and hard process to go through for whatever reason. It took me ages to give up on anything romantic or overtly feminine. It just does not work on me and I always feel ridiculous. Colour just stresses me out. I have been slowly weeding out my clothing and narrowing down what I really like and I realized what works for me is a lot of men’s tailoring so I started buying a lot of my clothes in the men’s department. I used to hate t shirts, too, until I started buying men’s. They’re longer and more rectangular (women’s are always little squares and the shoulder seams never sit right on me and they do weird things to the hems and the necklines are even crazier. Men’s are just long rectangles and honestly, they are way better quality. Most men’s clothing is way better quality. And the pockets!! They give men actual useful pockets!!). Letting go of heels really was ridiculously hard. It feels like it’s a set in stone requirement for women. I hate them. There is no such thing as a comfortable high heel. The only ones I can tolerate are kitten heels. I realized a good mule or a kitten heel work just as well and look elegant so I just donated my last pair of high heels this week. I will never buy a pair again. I’ve wasted so much money and mental bandwidth trying to find a heel that works. Anyhow …. I really like that you’re adamant that you’re not taking anyone else’s opinion on board. You know what you like and what makes you feel good and you’re sticking to it. Awesome.❤

It’s so interesting seeing what other people are saying-everyone’s style is so different, it’s cool. Personally, I couldn’t live without tshirts, jeans, and sneakers. I’ve realized that comfort is really what makes me feel at home in clothing, and honestly I think I look my best when I’m in comfy, cozy basics. I had to give up heels and ballet flats…I think they’re so cute but my feet don’t like them! 😩

I didn't realize how much I needed to see this video!! I'm truly not a fan of black and white on me. I keep having it in my wardrobe thinking I need the perfect "black dress", or "white crisp t-shirt" but I don't ..lol I love neutrals (creams, navy and grey) and soft colors pallets. The only prints that I go for are vintage florals and stripes. That's what I'm trying to stick to now.

I think it's important we stop buying clothes that we think we're supposed to have (like the basics we're all supposed to have). I finally got rid of the last white items in my closet. I've always felt I needed to face a white t-shirt and butten down shirt although I knew I look like a ghost in white. I also won't but any more button down shirts or other to stiff and structured clothes although shirts and blazers in more soft materials are fine. 🙂

I no longer wear dropped shoulder sweaters, warm tones, cropped clothing, high heels-I do wear kitten heels, and revealing clothes. T shirts are a must for at home wear in the summer and athletic shoes too, for walking and at home jobs. My color pallet is: black, navy, gray and white. The accent colors are burgundy and shades of blue. I would love to add green but it’s very hard to find cool toned greens.

I agree about keeping wardrobe colors limited. Even though my pro color analysis suggested certain colors for me, I have recently been eliminating some, like purples. Too many colors just add to wardrobe confusion, making it harder to put outfits together.

Knee length skirts. Good length for office situations, but other than that very blah. I prefer either the fun of a mini or the freedom of a calf length skirt. Big agree on polyester. I’ve been phasing almost all of it out with every declutter. For the price of new polyester, you can find secondhand silk, merino and cashmere. The trick with polyester is that it can look great in store when it’s sewn into a great design, but once worn it will be an awkward static mess and you’ll never choose to wear it over something nicer.

I felt exactly the same about t-shirts and intricate tops! I broke up with t-shirts over the summer, which is shocking in Texas. People think I'm crazy for wearing oxford shirts, but they're cooler as long as they are natural fibers and looser fitting. And I only just had to succumb to the fact that the intricate shirts make me feel uncomfortable. Two are currently sitting decluttered in my sell/donate pile now and those types of shirts aren't usually cheap. Lesson reluctantly learned.

I’ve always been attracted to boho tops but never felt good in them and I realized it’s probably because I was raised in the 60s/70s in a very hippie/boho place so the style calls to my emotions but my own style is far more geometric and structured, so now I enjoy boho styling that only from afar. Also, I’m mad about so many colors but only feel happy and at home in black, white and blue, so I enjoy color in non-wardrobe ways, i.e. art & décor. ITA re-limiting choice actually being freeing! 😊

I feel the t-shirt aspect so so much! I always end up buying them for work or spring/summer time, but it truly is more of a 'lazy item' to me that doesn't do much for the appearance, it may be effortless but that is also exactly how it looks like when you put a t-shirt on and NOT in a good way, haha.

Great video! I relate so much to everything you’ve mentioned! Particularly the ultra feminine and romantic tops. I absolutely love how they look on other people but after figuring out my personal style I found out that I don’t like how I feel when I am wearing them. I am short and young-ish looking, so I feel that I give a “fragile princess” vibe when I wear them. Nothing wrong with that “vibe” but that does not feel authentic on me. Finding my personal style is helping me save so much money, and more importantly to feel good and authentic.

Thank you so much for sharing! I remember having so many dilemmas on my personal style, until I realized I don't need to follow an already defined category such as the "cool girl" look to look uniquely myself. I really like that you take aspects from different styles and keep what you like and what works for you, which is what I'm trying to work on, and since finding your channel about a year ago I've made so many improvements! As a college student I've definitely made a lot of mistakes following clothing trends and trying to fit in, but I never felt excited about any of the trendy pieces on me (platform converse for example, so glad I didn't follow through with buying them!). I definitely also enjoy quality and timeless pieces more so I'm trying my best, (or as much as my budget can allow haha) but I'm buying less in general and giving more thought to my purchases thanks to you! Also I love the minor hot pink accents as well in a cool toned wardrobe :)

Shopping within a restricted colour palette does make clothes shopping much easier - and eliminates the pieces that don't work anything you already have . I loved this video. I made a list of my no-no purchases to remind myself of the reasons certain items don't work. When I break my rules, the items always end up going back, or I regret it after one wear. We share several. Others - drop shoulders, viscose (wrinkles so easily), faux leather, cocoon coats, square necklines, short sleeves with elastic. It is nice to have a clear idea of what defines your style so you can easily narrow down the choices. BUT, that has also left me paying high dollar for things that are exactly my style. I need to quit browsing!

For me I learned that it's not T-shirts I dislike, but crew cut necklines in general. Since I'm very busty but also have a very short and thick neck, anything too high up makes me look super bulky in a way I'm not comfortable with. Graphic tees can be an exception, but I also don't really like wearing them anywhere except inside the house. I've also learned not to buy pencil-shape miniskirts for the same reason- I don't like how it lays on my hip dips. I've learned to give up on animal print- they feel very "inauthentic" on me, even though animal print can look so chic and timeless on others.

Very helpful video! I had some problems with tee shirts as well and I had to think about what I did not like about some them: the colour white and the most common fabric used(regular cotton) which make them look too much like men underwear and also the length of the sleeves, I now choose mostly black Tee shirts with elbow length sleeves and more interesting textures like ribbed or nicer fabrics and also different necklines....

I also decided to not buy any skirts that aren't flowy or a-line BUT I recently ordered some skirts at an designer second hand shop and fell in love with a skirt that I never thought I would like^^ I have wide hips and a small waist, my upper body is in general very delicate but I sometimes have a problem with my belly. I loved my skater skirt for years now and therefore I thought "okay only skater skirts for me" but I felt a bit like a little girl in the past months in it (maybe also because its very short) In my order there was this purple tight skirt, a little bit like a pencil skirt but shorter, and I fell in love. Even though it's tight, it's not unflattering for my belly and it shows my hips, what I really like. I even combined it with bigger sweaters, what I thought I would NEVER wear, but I feel so good in it. Even though it's maybe not the best choice for my body type. I don't ban the a-line skirts now but I will overthink them in the future. It's important to have rules, I still have some left and always do more but it's so much fun to figure out how to break them and do something new. In my experience it's good to not focus so much of ones wardrobe and want to make it perfect. I mostly wear very old clothes that I bought when I was like 15. I just style them differently. Yeah my story about my new skirt. Do you know the Kibbe system and have you thought learning about it? Greetings from Germany :)

I feel like we are the same person because I’m given up pretty much everything that you have 😂 I’ve switched my high heels to mid heel (2-3 inches/5-7.5 cm) boots. I live in Canada and it’s cold enough for boots like 7-8 months of the year, so why would I need multiple pairs of strappy high heels haha

I have been on a similar style journey. I have stopped wearing t-shirts, jeans, polyester, and cool toned colors (for the most part. I have two blue dresses that contrast my skin nicely and actually look good) I also don't like most prints anymore, except for vintage florals, gingham, and plaid. I also don't wear black or stark white. I enjoy wearing linen cropped tanks, vintage button down a line midi skirts, and dresses. I don't like blazers and will always opt for a knit cardigan. I have realized that I feel most myself dressing very feminine. Anything too structured, masculine, or edgy feels uncomfortable on me. I wear linen, cotton, silk, and wool.

Fuchsia, that vivid purplish-pink. I finally had to admit that it just doesn't work with my complexion. I still get tempted, but I remind myself about the last time I bought a sweater that color; it stayed on the shelf because it just never looked good on me, no matter how much I wanted it to. My sister looks great in it, but not me.

Really informative video! I also am trying to curate my wardrobe but I am still figuring my style buuuut I do have an idea of what I want colour wise and that is brown (most shades), blue, black, white, light pink and wine red. One thing I noticed about older women is that they try to dress according to their age (my mom and grandma specifically). They refuse to buy nice things for themselves and urge me to get some because I'm "young" (24 y/o). I really hope I can persuade them of letting go of their fear and dress chic like other people. I know for a fact I will be a chic old woman as the years go by. I don't want them to feel like they don't deserve nice things, you know? It makes me sad to hear that.

Dresses are one thing I really really love, but they tend to be more fickle when it comes to the cut. I also opt for A-line only due to my hip dip… I have on only one side after childbirth lol. Moro jackets were my younger self style marker, but i’ve since grown out of that style also. They don’t suit me as much now but I just recently thrifted a leather trench which is totally me now. I do still wear T-shirts but I only opt for longer sleeves that cover the thickest part of my upper arm. They are slimming that way and somehow look slightly more elevated. I’ve had to give up knee-high boots because they conflict with the most flattering jeans for my body type, straight jeans. I have kept a couple pairs of cigarette style jeans to wear with boots in the colder months as I still enjoy that. I also wear my knee-high boots with dresses but currently, I’m starting to rule out whether they fit in my style anymore at all. Vintage is definitely more my style marker now and I really enjoy the fabrics and a few patterns. Modern patterns don’t seem to flatter me at all.

I've stopped buying filmsy shirts and short pants, and even polo. Though I love my 2011 Ralph Lauren U.S. Open Polo - Own it for over 10 years now, and it still fits amazing! I would usually wear smart casual outfit now - sweater and pants/shirts and overcoat and pants/jeans.

Also, I stopped buying items made in China, and focused on Made In Europe/U.S.A./Canada/Australia luxury items and only go for natural fibers - wool, silk, cashmere, leathers, linen, and fur.

Thank you Naja, as for T-shirts, I bitterly realised that cotton t-shirts and polyester t-shirts, also have not worked for me. Mostly because since I only have less than 5 they usually go out of shape and becomes “old looking” very quickly and the polyester ones I can see the little plastic fibers coming out of the T-shirt… it’s super sad for me because I would love the feel of a cotton shirt but with the polyester shape and body hugging quality. I guess it’s just now for me too 😞

Im the opposite of you: t-shirts make up a huge part of my style but I look like an idiot in a blazer. I want so bad for a blazer to work and I don't know why it doesn't. My style is simple, effortless and laid back. Maybe it's too formal. It's funny how you can love how something looks but cannot tolerate it on yourself. I'm having one last ditch attempt at buying a leather blazer and then I'm throwing in the towel.

Maybe you haven't hit on the right blazer. There are different styles and lengths. Also it's very stylish now to pair a belted blazer with shorts. If you feel too exposed, you can wear a transparent skirt over the shorts. Funky and fun but if done in black, looks stylish but more toned down.

Literally everything you are done with is the same for me, with the exception of t shirts. I would add turtleneck/cowl neck tops for myself. Everyone looks so cozy in them and I want to like them, but they just end up looking and feeling like they are swallowing me/adding bulk in a spot where a fitted crew neck or mock neck is much more polished and flattering on me. It’s a shame for my wallet because it’s so easy to thrift good quality turtlenecks lol

I mostly closed the door on heels too - I now only have 1, a pair of nude heels in a style that goes with everything, from little black dresses in winter to sundresses in summer, and they've been acceptable to the brides whose weddings I've been in, so far at least!

Apart from 3 items in my entire wardrobe I don’t have ‘black’ as a ‘colour’ in my wardrobe. When I started working towards a more simplified wardrobe and really analyzing what I really like to wear I realized I don’t like black. The only item I really do like is my black moto jacket. I have a pair of black jeans and a black cardigan sweater. I never wear the black jeans ( I still can’t quite get rid of them because I still think but what if I need black ‘bottoms’ for something) and I wear the sweater once or twice a season. Where I live almost everyone else wears so much black all the time for the majority of the year.

It's great to know what you find that are practical for you and the other things that are just wasted when they sit in your closet unworn. We also have lifestyle changes that dictate our wardrobe as well. If you never wear heels, do not spend money on them. One pair is enough. I think you are one of a very few that does not like tee shirts. There is another European lady I watch that does not wear them. Is it an American "thing" that has migrated all over the world? We are "tee queens".

I’m on a slow journy to find my personal style and it feel like I’m getting there. I’m not doing a minimalist approach tho so I’m quite open to most things, but trying to take it slow. For me my no list is: Flowy skirts at any length. So beautiful but I don’t feel like myself. I prefer more structured or fitted skirts. Ruffles in general. Too feminine for me. Classic button ups, especially in white. I like flowy ones with a v-neck but with classic ones I either feel like a tent if it’s over sized or like a waiter. Dresses. This is hard one for me because they look so lovely, but I very rarely use them. The ones I have I only use at special occations and there is no need to buy any more

I only recently discovered that I have "Violin hips" (AKA hip dips I believe) and an unusually long rise. I always thought (everyone told me) that I had very long legs, and I am very long from the waist to the floor, but more from waist to crotch! 🤣 This was so revealing to me, and explains why so many pants , and mid rise jeans just don't feel right. I tend to think body proportions might be the place to start when figuring out "personal style", I had fixated on color theory (there are a few, and some bad advice out there), but the wrong fit in the right color is not gonna work. 😉💖

Polyester is the worst! I love the Sezane aesthetic but have to agree that those detailed, romantic tops are just too overwhelming. Usually makes me feel like a child playing dress up. I'd add florals and patterns to my 'not interested' list. I love them but they feel busy on me for the same reason.

I'm 19 and my style just changes really quick, like in around weeks. I've been thrifting since march and it was another world for me, finding things that I see on internet but never have seen by myself in a normal fashion store. What I learned from thrifting is that most of the time I'll find really "iconic" o trendy clothes, but what is mostly rare is to find QUALITY. That's more expensive, more inusual or good tasting but it is what will last longer in you wardrobe. Now I have a virtual thrift store to give a lot of clothes another life with someone else. That's way healthier, cleaner and more balanced than just spending on acclaimed outfits that I'll likely never use.

II’d love a dramatic sleeve. I love a puffy sleeve. If you look at my wedding gown 30 years ago his most intricate puffy sleeve ever. However I cannot stand wearing on me. I love it on other people am I sometimes buy it but I never wear it. What I do like or simple shirt dresses however I’m still attracted to the puffy sleeve dress. I had to except that it looks good and other people. It does not feel good on me. It’s just doing too much.I also realized after your video that I also don’t like wearing pants. I Ihave forced myself to wear pants I realize this. Because I think it’s practical. But I don’t enjoy them come to think of it.think I’m going to try giving up pants. I do love wearing dresses. I love a one and done.

I still "use up" all the colourful and multiple shoes from my teen years but my Mainly used shoes are 1 pair of white Sneakers 1 pair of Black Sneakers 1 pair of birkenstocks for Summer 1 pair of Black boots 1 pair of Brown boots 1 pair of Creme heels That covers all of my life situatioms but unfortunatly as a teen I bought more and more shoes, some of which I dont even like or give me blisters. In the future I will only replace my basic shoes when they break
