My favourite scene! Beats the Chess scene hands down. Needless to say, I am still mesmerized by the whole film after all these years. Strongly recommended. P.S. Don't bother with the pathetic remake that they shoveled on us a few years ago. Go for the original ...

Sublime. Emotions captured vividly! Miss Vicki's wistful glance skyward whilst ceding the torn telegraph to her inevitable heartbreak. Her face a pallet of emotional anguish. Meanwhile, Tomy's face recasts from remorse to a simper; a man more in love with his liberty than with his paramour. Their romance ultimately doomed as each succumbs to their true nature. My dad loved this movie! An although it's a pleasure to watch and absorb on it's own merits, it's the memory of watching together with him that kindles warm memories. Here's to you Dad! We miss you!

Did you notice that in this scene, Vicki Anderson is dressed in black and very little makeup unlike the rest of the movie when she would be dressed in high fashion outfits. Even her personality is subdued. Great job by Faye Dunaway to make her seem vulnerable and sympathetic. She would do it again in "Three Days of the Condor" and then turn right around 180 degrees in "Network".

This was one of my mom's favorite movies. She passed away on October 10, 2015. she loved the way that Faye Dunaway looked in the chess scene & the first scene that she is in at the airport. The music was & still is awesome. she would watch it every time that is came on Turner Classic Movies. played the entire soundtrack for three hours after I found out that she had died. she was 73... watching this movie without her is never going to be the same

A great flick, and definitely my favorite of Steve McQueen’s. McQueen and Dunaway are both in their absolute prime here. Suspenseful story, slick scenes, creative camera work, excellent editing. Great ending. “Left early. Please come with the money, or, you keep the car. All my love, Tommy.”

+see noevo Believe it or not, McQueen and Dunaway couldn't stand each other. In the dune buggy sequence, McQueen (who did his own driving scenes; he was an accomplished stunt and race car driver) deliberately went over dunes and at high speeds to scare Faye Dunaway.

I saw this movie as a teenager when it was new, and it continued to grow on me in the following years - partly because the ultra-'60s ambience has become more fascinating as that time has receded further in the past. I have always liked the film a lot, although the plot really doesn't make sense if you pay attention to it. Regardless, this ending is emotionally powerful and to me works extremely well because you really can't be sure what's going to happen. When Faye is confronted by what's been done to her, the shock is conveyed so well by her collapse against the open car door, the loud jet streaking across the sky and the quick-cut zoom to her drained face. Her tearing up the telegram and tossing it to the wind is perhaps overly dramatic, but again, I think it works masterfully. She came into this situation supremely self-assured, striding through Logan Airport in Boston and dressed throughout in the most up-to-date outfits, and at the end that almost arrogant attitude has been crushed by the betrayal.

A sublime ending: suspense, emotion, music, the driver's POV, the fish-eye shot, editing (that double-zoom to Vicki's eyes), her broken 'your funer-al?' line and Tommy's laconic voiced-over telegram... What is she feeling as she reads and tears up the message? Maybe relief at first that Tommy has escaped her trap? Then reality setting in when she looks down at the shreds in her hands? Defiance when she looks skyward and tosses the shreds into the breeze? Heartbreak as she face-palms ('What have I done?')? How can anyone not be moved by her self-made predicament and its outcome?

McQueen had rented a mansion from one of the aristocratic Lodge family members when filming. Uno dei più' grandi finali della storia del cinema. E in fondo uno dei più' amari. Perche' perdono entrambi. Certo, sulla bilancia, lei più' di lui. Capolavoro assoluto di un' eta' dell',' oro per il cinema americano.

No, there was money. There are some quick shots of the second bank robbery just before this scene, so money was actually stolen.

This ending made the whole padded-feeling movie entirely worth it. He utterly screws her sideways. She is utterly humiliated and doesn't get Steve McQueen, her career is over and she'll never work in insurance recovery again, and she'll be lucky to avoid prison for her illegal behavior towards Erwin's family.

@@RobespierreThePoof I was gonna say just watched it and didn't get the ending, sorry. That he has just ruined her is the only conclusion although she looks weirdly happy about it..? "Bring the money or you can keep the car"...she can't bltake him the money and he knows it, and the car gift is irrelevant, so he's saying she's only worth anything to him if she now becomes a criminal. Or someone pls explain what I've missed... Yup McQueen was cool and Faye in the chess scene...but still prefer the Brosnan/Russo version 🙂

He is a narcissist that fell in love. And since it makes him feel powerless, he had to destroy her to be top dog. The thing is, if she ran to him and became a criminal with him...she wouldn't be the person he loved and he would just drop her. But if she takes the fall and comes out with honor, she can be that fantasy figure on a pedestal that he loves from afar.

Ive always thought about that!!!! He really knew that he couldn't trust her and never allowed himself to fall into the love trap. He knew that doing her job was all she cared about..and she would do anything to betray him and be the winner. Its definitely the mgtow film.

I agree. The film makes the case that they are both corrupted. But ultimately she was more honest than she thought she was and he was more awful than he expected. He won but he isn't laughing like he was in the beginning. He broke his own heart.

@@kerrytakashi12 not corrupted whatever that may mean, they both are playing their games seriously, both like each other. He does say about his motive for the crime early on, he is playing the system and he knows enough about it too. She is playing for the system and she will get him, her smile at the end is because she is grateful she did not. "you did say it was your funeral" Her tears because they were in love but in the middle in the sauna scene where they try to set up a deal and escape from it, her inflexible compatriot puts pay to that. She is inflexible in a way too as she is not going to wuss out of doing her job, oh no sir, and neither him my goodness they are perfect match. She beats him at the chess game, staged though it was but that CHECK and his reaction to that, the reckoning, she is totally on his level, his woman. No he doesn't cry, it is generally the female who does that, but his look is not quite so self assured at the end, he is facing the loss like her. I still think they should have worked out the chess game with an advisor and actually put a whole real game in their but hell you can't have everything....
