finally, people realizing the animation was really good in this episode. some people were saying that the animation became trash this ep but it's just the art style that got simplified for better animation, a signature style of the main person animating this episode...

The animation and camera direction on MaoMao going up to the lady in waiting is one of my favourite moments. Plus the character acting. Instead of doing that stupid trait of having an angry character's shoulders move, which doesn't happen in reality, they keep MaoMao perfectly still. Pure silent rage building.

12:52 Nah, it's a technique and, as you can see with the brothel girls Maomao knows, they don't need to make it look bigger since they already got that natural "talent". It's implied here and in the manga that it's a technique with a big bust as a requirement, so.... probably paizuri.

This episode managed to do something that no other show *_really_* has done in an absurd amount of time now: make me actively scared of a character when they get mad. Maomao in the scene where she reprimands the lady-in-waiting is already scary on her own, but the voice acting by Aoi Yuuki contributes so much to the atmosphere that it honestly gets terrifying, just because of how real it feels I haven't felt like this for an anime character, much less a main protagonist, in years

Maomao's initial difficulties in feeding Lihua is due to the fact that lady Lihua's ladies-in-waiting still outrank Maomao. Maomao's PAINFULLY aware how a single slip-up could mean her execution. Of course, then she lost her temper... 😏 And yeah, the emperor is, understandably, not given a lot of screen-time, but from what we've seen he's at least reasonable. And as we learn in a later episode, he's definitely got at least one thing over the previous emperor.

With flagellation, there were different tiers of it. There were strokes with the "light rod" which was something like caning, it would be painful, maybe leave scars like whipping does depending on how many strokes but overall it wasn't permanently harmful. Then there were strokes with the "heavy rod", which would be something like being beaten a .75in -1.75in thick piece of wood (the actual unit of measurement is width of knuckle on forefingers and the heavy rod could be two knuckles wide at 1.5 cun), commonly administered in 10, 20 or 30 strokes at a time. The heavy rod could maim, permanently disable or kill in harsher punishments as the custom was to deliver it across the back. For failing in his duties like that a Eunuch could receive a *very* harsh punishment. In later dynasties they got even more crazy with it either using weights on the end, or still hot irons to deliver the harsher sentences, with even higher numbers of blows delivered. The lady in waiting got off very light comparitively having just been confined. Probably because she didn't know that the powder was poison while the eunuch did. I wouldn't be surprised if they omitted a punishment of strokes with the light rod (aka a caning). light rod was usually across the bottom or thighs, but rarely recorded as an actual punishment unless you sincerely wanted to humiliate someone.

The emperor basically hired Gyoukyou's girl in front of her as a show of "remember that you're only one of the concubines. I have care and concern for the others, and i will express that in front of you to make sure you aren't getting a big head over your recent status"

This was the episode that really endeared me to this show. When we first met Lihua I thought it was gonna be the classic jealous concubine who's mean and antagonist but this show is truly a bunch of characters in a situation. And I love that. It makes the show really addicting to watch ❤

Maomao is terrifying. Because she is an individual who is an expert in bringing people back to health. If you can’t respect your own health in her presence, she will kill you herself because you are wasting her time AND your own. Wasting care and compassion that is worth more than gold. Because beauty is fleeting, life is precious.

In the manga, Maomao left Lihua's idiotic lady-in-waiting *EVEN MORE* scarred; the servant's hair was more disheveled and she was left crying and silent after Maomao's verbal "discipline" (and Maomao was more terrifying in said manga panels, too). Not only that, but the idiotic woman got sent back home as punishment for applying the banned make up on Lady Lihua in the original manga (unlike how she spent some time in solitary confinement before returning to work for Lady Lihua in the anime... a weird change to the story🤔). ... And there is a specific reason - later revealed much later in the Apothecary Diaries manga - about *WHY* Lady Lihua had such stupid and useless lady-in-waitings! O.O

some things i've learned from c-dramas with harems: the emperor can help you once but not always (you must be capable enough to fight your own battles), ladies-in-waiting are an extension of their master, once you've slept with the emperor the real war begins, mouth shut but ears open, and never leave a trail. so i absolutely love this anime. it has the psychological warfare i love and maomao is an ace lead character. 💥

This episode director and storyboarder was ちな(China) and he worked with もああん(Moaang) to create one of the best episode in term of character acting this year. This episode was so well produced that only 6 or 7 people did the key animation and 0 (zero) 2nd key animation, that is unheard of in this industry (if you look at certain episodes of jjk, we have more than a hundred 2nd KA and like 30-40 first KA because of its horrible production/planning) (if I got something wrong here please correct me)

The anime shows how cheap the life of lower status like commoner back then. Eunuch was punished because a lady-in-waiting hid the powder without him knowing. Mao Mao can be punished if something happened to Lihua because she is under the request from the emperor, literally direct request. (It is even possible if something did happen and Lihua's ladies-in-waiting give testimonies as if Mao Mao is the main cause and the higher-ups will believe them more because the ladies are from higher ranks). Mao Mao at first cannot simply went against Lihua's ladies-in-waiting because they outrank her. At least Mao Mao was able to observe the life style and situation there like the food Lihua usually eats. The palace is full of enemies. A concubine's trusted allies usually should be her ladies-in-waiting. Lihua's ladies-in-waiting can be wary of Mao Mao because she technically is still Gyokuyo's lady-in-waiting and it's like 'lending' her to Lihua (the emperor likes to 'visit' both concubines, in a way they're like rivals. Imagine your rival's ally is in your base) but still, they're being way too wary. Mao Mao understands how cheap the commoner's life, at times she kept some facts or predictions to herself so that commoners' lives would not be wasted easily, simply because of her words (like how in ep 3 she kept her theory hidden so the two couple can have their own happy ending. If she told them, the couple may have tragic ending. Even if it's only 'prediction' and not fact, it still can cause lives). That's why at times Mao Mao tries to be ignorant and not to pursue certain things further...but she is mad scientist, sometimes she can't help it but being curious... that's why she ended up as Gyokuyo's lady-in-waiting 😅

Things you should know about ancient China, which I think you should know since it's very foreign concept to westerners. You might view "emperor" to be synonym as "king" but for East Asia culture, it's not. "Emperor" is actually being viewed closer to god, rather than a king. Emperor is divine. They aren't mortal beings, unlike western concept of kings. Because of such concept, no peasants can argue with the Emperor. If he wants your head flies, your head flies. No question asked. No ifs and buts. That's the position MaoMao right now. Emperor command her to do something and if she fails her head flies. There is no reasoning with the emperor.

Most of the ladies in waiting are from upper families. Maomao is a servant, and a commoner at that, recent elevation in position or not. But, more interesting, is that none of the ladies in waiting seemed to be doing some of the jobs they should be doing like the Jade Palace ladies were. We learn more about why that is, maybe a year from now? But, honestly? If not for the backing of Jinshi, and the utter terror she put into those girls, even if she was in the right, raising her hand to someone above her station like that would normally get her punished something fierce. Whipping or something worse. And another thing, women don't become doctors in this era. Not to mention the general level of education is all around fairly low for that sort of thing. So, honestly? They were dumb, but didn't really have a reason to think otherwise. They were using common wisdom. Which, if you hadn't noticed, wasn't all that wise.

either they were annouced as poison and the lady in waiting still hid it because she thought they were joking, or the most likely is that they didn't announce that it poison and that the powder is only banned in the palace. because they are truely ignorant. also the one that got punished just because they fail to gather all the white powder. its natural for them to get this punishment, and it doesn't matter if its the lady who hid it. in history, any small mistake can be severe or straight up dead. i'm shock with the number of character in this show who made mistake and live with small to only harsh punishment and no death. like the lady in waiting, she could have been killed just for that mistake no matter if she knew or not, maybe a more harsher punishment, but she just got locked up and gets to serve again. then again this is not really based on history.

I guess you guys aren't that much aware of the difference in standing between the people involved. It's very different from modern times where we can talk freely and not be punished for it. This was the Ming Dynasty where talking back to your superiors are met with harsh punishments. It's also the reason why this culture of a harem paradise for the Emperor exists, precisely because if he wants it, he can have it. The emperor in this case is seen as a literal God, so seeking an audience with him by itself is almost impossible. Not to mention Maomao's standing in the rear palace, she's just a lady-in-waiting for another concubine. Most other lady-in-waiting were also former nobles, so seeing Maomao serve peasant food didn't help her case. In this case she was quite easily stuck between a rock and a hard place, but luckily she had Jinshi on her side lol.
