This is Madison Russo, the teenager that used social media to chronicle the battle for her life. A heartbreaking journey that had followers open their hearts-and their wallets-to the Iowa teen. But now, recent allegations have called into question the very basis of Maddie’s online fame. And these accusations aren’t just cancellable-they’re criminal.

Greetings from Connecticut. In 2009, I was involved in a near fatal car accident. Like you, I incurred SCI, although my injury is incomplete. It took a long time for life to feel normal again, but I just keep going and have learned a different appreciation. I suspect you know exactly what I mean by this. However, chronic, severe pain, that ie under-treated by FDA restrictions on pain management MDs, is a heavy crois many-of us carry. I always wish to talk to other SCI survivors. Oh, I’m also an RN. Coincidently, long before any of this happened, my nursing specialty is neuro. May I contact you, possibly via Facebook? Nothing nefarious or inappropriate. I just think persons living with SCI do learn, and gain strength, from one another. Thanks. And, I also donated $$$ to Maddie.

It’s not about being not able to do the things she could but some people just want to go through this kind of “journey” quietly and that alone requires a different level of strength, of courage, to face cancer “head-on.” Sometimes it is just tiresome to “repeat" your story to different people - some just out of curiousity of what is going on in your life but never give a care at all. But yes, seeing this woman claiming to have cancer and getting money from people is beyond disgusting and generally awful!

It's very much possible that her family may not know the truth. My first time with cancer my mom didn't know all the details. She would call me once in a while to check on me. I lived in a different state so she did not see me only photos. I only sent good ones. I found out two years ago on her death bed why. It was not that she didn't care. It was hard for her and she didn't want to see me that way. She said if I passed she would only have good memories. 😞😞 Only to lose her seven weeks later to stage four liver cancer. She lived seven weeks after finding out she was sick. I miss her.

My daughter lost her childhood best friend to leukemia at 17. It started out as just a pain in her knee and since they played soccer nobody thought nothing of it until she got very sick. She ended up getting severe depression and stopped taking her treatments. It was devastating watching such a vibrant young lady crash and burn so quickly. This woman should be utterly ashamed this is the lowest of the low.

To me, what's terrible is that not only did she soil the legacy of the invisible illness community and actual ill people who may find themselves not believed due to her actions, but she also reinforced the idea that chronically/terminally ill/disabled people can perform a semblance of "normal life" if they try hard enough, if they put their head up and grind, if they stay positive, if they just do better. It's a terrible statement and one that has been told to us for ages to force us to be quiet and stop asking for accommodations or other help. It also aligns with the beliefs of some people that if we try hard enough and believe in ourselves/etc, the illness would leave our body, we'll get better etc, you know, the manifestation type of narrative.

@@Zowiezo101 Capitalism combined with ableism is awful like that. It puts an entire person's worth down to how big of a "contribution" they can make and nothing else. It's disgusting to me. Every one of us is valid, regardless of if we're able to work or not, do the chores or not, we're all fundamentally valid and worthy. The way that a society treats its vulnerable people says WAY more about it than anything else. Sadly, ableism is so freaking rampant that it breaks my heart. I was so tired and in pain I couldn't even walk but this girl could do so much and have alot of energy with similar cancers as mine. I was literally inches of death. The cancers I had was lymphoma and leukemia and I had a tumor in my lymphoid the size of baseball on my neck. I was literally only 13 at the time. I saw and felt so many horrible things. I lost so many friends in the hospital when I was getting my treatments. I still have survivors guilt. It's disheartening to think that trust can be manipulated for personal gain, especially when people's genuine care and support are exploited. Let's use this as a reminder to approach online stories and fundraising campaigns with caution and to continue fostering a culture of genuine compassion and support for those in need.
