Almost exactly two years ago I flew from Phoenix, AZ to Austin, TX to purchase my "dream motorcycle" for nearly $20,000. It wasn't the smartest move and today I'm talking about why.

You took a hit financially but then again, did you really? You got some great experience, you got some awesome content with it, you had a blast on it, you got a lot of subs from it most likely, and you owned a dyna LRS with 110hp and rode it around for a while and still got over 17k from it when you sold it. In the grand scheme of failures, that’s not that bad my man. And you got an awesome story from it👍!

Honestly I was upset you got rid of it. Just because I liked seeing you haul ass on it. Completely understand why though. I have the same “guilt”with owning it, having a family. I also live in Michigan so I can’t ride it half the year. BUT when I hop on it come spring and all my problems evaporate I know why I bought it.

Not a failure. It’s more like a learning experience. At the same time you made content rode it around. Came back with a bad ass 1k mile ride to me seems like a W. On top of that you sold it not bad if you ask me. I actually just bought my first Harley about 9 months ago. Couldn’t be happier I got the same bike you sold it’s a bad ass bike bro. I like you're standards and general outlook on life. In your mind it was a mistake but relative to what we watch others spend on motorcycles, you didn't lose much on it. I watch friends buy expensive new Harleys and put thousands of dollars into them and end up selling them or trading them in for half what they paid. You make money on lots of bikes. Your a good stuard of your money. Glad to see you posting. I've watched your channel for a long while thus you seem like a friend. Heed a warning from an old guy. Be careful to not lose site of your family working away from home so much. Obviously don't know the details but seems a bit harsh for your young ones... Hope and pray the best for you and your wife..

I remember that bike. It's really thought to balance the wants in life with the reality of life. I have a few bikes that I dream of having. I have had a few bikes in the past but I've always bought used and pretty inexpensive bikes. After a dry spell of not having a bike for around 8 years I finally picked up a brand new bike my Yamaha Bolt. I still want an FXR a DYNA or maybe my new obsession the new Indian Chief. But for now I'll keep my dependable and affordable Bolt. It's cool we can live vicariously through you and your bike purchases. Keep up the cool content 👍

Glad you were able to sell it for a relatively little loss, you basically paid like $2K to have it for the time you had it, I think that's fine. My worst nightmare would be dropping $20K on something and then having it stuck in the garage not being able to sell it for a long time.

Learned so much from your channel. Experience and living it is what counts, as long as you enjoyed it, it ain't a failure, maybe slight overshoot, but you still had fun owing it. I'm on my 4th bike, a street bob. I broke even only on the Street Rod, sold for less on the other 2, but not regretting since I now know exactly what they ride, money well spent. I'm eyeing a XL1200 to learn tricks.

I’ll never sell it, as I’ve spent what it cost new on it at this point. But I did it knowing I never would sell it even if I sold every other bike. I bought a used, almost bone stock (they replaced seat and added passenger pegs, sub 10k miles) 2016 FXDLS somewhat recently after starting on a XL883C. It was THE bike that that got me interested in motorcycles in the first place, and thankfully it's been a good fit so far. I don't do any stunt riding, but do a lot of cruising, occasionally 2-up, but don't yet have much interest in a full-on baggers yet.The power is a blessing for my use, but I can absolutely understand why it wouldn't make sense if you want to stunt with it though; it's just too much for that, too expensive too. It took me about 4 years to pull the trigger on, but that's a blessing as I had several other bikes considered that, in hindsight, would not have been a good fit for how I ride. I remember finding your channel a while back because of the FXDLS, but happy that you've focused on what makes you happiest; not what's just the hotness. I love the FXDX too and the Sporty I had really made me appreciate the carbed bikes.

I was in the same boat, tried to justify a used FXDLS with 1500 miles at 17k. Drove out with a trailer to bring it home, after riding it, i honestly couldnt spend that much. I bought another Yamaha Bolt, was super happy, then found a 08 Street Glide ULTRA CHEAP, and built a 'performance bagger.' I dug your videos, kinda why I was looking for a FXDLS. I have to be true to myself. Im cheap AF, I rather build a cheap bobber and cruise it than buy a 15k 'nice' bike. Live and learn my guy.

I think I remember that video, you asked the seller about how the bike handled during wheelies. The seller never attempted any stunts, but the whole build screamed wheelie factory. $18k is a lot of mulah, I had buyers remorse with a $4k bike. I would've lost sleep for days, making payments just doesn't hurt as much short term.

I clearly remember the day you bought the bike and posted the video. I thought you bought a great bike but for the wrong reasons. that's a bike you keep and cherish, not stunt and wheelie. But you did make great content with it, probably made a little scratch from your youtube videos with it, and had a great adventure. I think you are being way too hard on yourself calling the whole experience a failure. You learned from it, therefore, it was not a failure. we are all fallible humans that make decisions with our hearts and not always with our heads. done it more than a few times myself. you and the kids are all fine, Jackie stood by you the whole time, and you are all still a family. It's just a bike. They come and go. let go of your thoughts of it as being a failure, and remember the fun. I've been watching you since early in your youtube career. keep being you and it'll all work out. Peace!

Realized that mistake after watching this video hahaha jk, kind of... 🤦‍♂️ I've got the drz to rip on and fool around with. I'm moving to Italy and already looking at the insane price tag Italians will pay for an FXDLS. So maybe it wasn't a financialy poor decision, we'll see. The issue was the release of the Softail low rider S. People thought the Low Rider S was done forever. Then, 2 years later they brought it back and all the Dyna low rider S that were going for 20K+ just sat unsold. People still think their Dyna Low Rider S are a rare great bike, but the softail version is just a better bike all around.

For my nineteenth birthday my dad gave me a Honda magna that was my grandpas. It had sat wasting away since he passed away in 2007. Having never wrenched or ridden before I had dreams of fixing then modifying it into a badass daily rider. Fast forward two years through hundreds of hours of wrenching and thousands of dollars worth of parts and I thought I had finally gotten to the finish line. After putting a just couple hundred miles on it it developed what appears to be rod knock. After losing my job a couple weeks ago I’m all out of money to perform the major overhaul required to save it. All this is to say that motorcycles can give you the highest highs and the lowest lows. So don’t sweat the dyna mistake. Maybe me and you both will get rich enough to thrash a $20k bike one day.

It was a mistake, in hindsight I should’ve only had him make a custom snare for me... no reason to get a full kit, especially as big as I ordered it! 26” kick, 14x14 tom, 16x16 floor tom. I did a similar thing back in 2018 with a 2018 TRD Tacoma. I saw everyone doing rad shit with them on KZfaq and IG, bought one and was pretty much instantly disappointed because at the time I lived in a place where I had to spend 3+ hours on pavement to find any dirt/trails. Expectations are complicated, but that was an $8k loss when I traded it for a 2015 STI.

Crashing the $20k fxdls doing stunts when you have a young family to take care of would have been a mistake. But then crashing even a "cheap" bike would be a mistake when you have a young family that depends on you. Maybe the lesson is even deeper than you took it. Priorities man, you gotta stay safe for your wife and kids. Jumping off roofs and falling off skateboards is not "adulting". Yes I'm a boomer, but I ride an fxdls and subscribed to your channel due to that bike.

Jon would you consider your 2000 FXDX your favorite bike to drift .. by the time we saw you on that bike you looked like a Pro ..I never learned to do donuts or drift get me a class with Dom_829 ;) But I love doing wheelies .. the only time I've come close to 12 o'clock scared the bejesus out of me. GSXR 600RR for me is a very controllable balanced wheelie machine 5TH gear at 100mph hardly any RPM just crack the throttle it comes right up & you can ride that forever. I've tried to wheelie my Road King but that is a lot of weight, I'd hate to come down on the side. Probably have as much dinero invested in that Road King as Thorne did in the 2017 Dyna and no way I'm drifting that beast. I've seen people do it.. but no .. I will probably never be able to get that money back out of it. It will become a piece of garage furniture before I take a loss. I see you took your skateboard with you ..get a little trailer and throw the Grom on it.. That hotel room just doesn't sound right without your helmet audio and a V-Twin thumping in the background. @@JonsMotoGarage just got mine last week in the og black only problem now is it’s so mint condition I feel like I’m violating it anytime I look at modding it even came with the original owners and service Harley Davidson book manuals from 2000. Look forward to seeing you do more content with that purple beast even if it’s just riding it and not stunting 🤙

When I was in grad school I used a student loan to buy a 2002 RC51 SP2. Fucking awesome japanese v-twin with so much torque. I threw a ohlins rear shock in it, a few years later it was stolen and I will be paying off my student loans for the next 10 years. Now that was a stupid mistake.

Probably not a dyna but a sportster for now and set it up like a dyna (ill probably buy one already set up how i like) but anyways, i was wondering which would you say is more fun and better. Which one do you find yourself using more

I'm in thr like exact same boat. 13,5 for a 17 street bob and I prolly have close to 20k in it and want to stunt, but at this point... wayyy too much money into it. I'll stick with burnouts and rollers.

I discovered you because of this bike. A little back story on me, had a very brutal divorce followed by a very long contentious custody battle. Spent THOUSANDS in court and legal fees. I told myself that after i paid off all my legal debt, I will be treating myself to a motorcycle. (I know how to ride). Fast forward, I originally was obsessed with the scout until i started reading more about the Low Rider S. I decided to make the plunge and purchase one in a few months, but just like you, I’m trying to justify the price. My question to you is do you have any other regrets about this bike. Please share.

Bro you’re hella funny. Your putting way too much on it. It is a rad bike and you got a killer deal on it, especially considering all the work that was put into it. You literally could’ve kept it and the value would only gone up honestly you could’ve sold it and profited a couple grand. No joke, there is one right now at SF Moto in Redwood City it is bone stock with 5000 miles on it a is nd they are asking $27,000 for it. which is fucking insane. I’m sure they won’t get that but still It is crazy what people are willing to pay for that exact bike. Everything that Thor did to that build was fucking on point. Literally from the cams, to the seat, to the fucking handgrips, Everything looked great, until you went and threw on those ugly ass hard bags LOL joking. I do have a similar story myself. I lived in San Francisco and I have been following you for a couple years now. Shortly after you got that bike I jumped on an airplane and flew to Imperial County which is pretty much on the border of San Diego and Mexico. The gentleman I bought the bike from also owed money on, so there was a lien on title. I purchased the bike from him and then I rode it back . Although it was not nearly as long of a ride as you the whole experience was fun and I learned a lot. I just didn’t have as much of a distance to ride as you I rode to LA and then my cousin threw it in the back of his pick up truck and gave me a ride to the Bay Area.I have had the bike for sometime now and fucking love it. I have almost sold it a couple times because I also have kids and at one point needed the money but I sure am glad I did not sell it I backed out of the deal at the last minute and literally flaked out on the guy LOL. Honestly you did great you got a great deal on the bike, had tons of fun on it, got tons of use, taught people a lot, I know I went on there and watchedvyour videos over and over and learned a lot about the bike I was about to purchase. Not to mention if I had not watched your videos I know I would not have gotten on the plane and gone that distance to pick up that bike you definitely inspired me to go on a trip to buy the bike and ride it back🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻❤️❤️❤️

Me. should I get a sportster and potentially outgrow it or should I get a softail standard or lowrider S and potentially get more bike than I need / should spend on..... watching this video didn't exactly help my anxiety around big purchases rofl. great video / content btw always enjoy your honesty.

If your trying to do long trips the dyna dude. A sportster can be kitted for long hauls but you'll be spending some $$ at that point. Me personally I have a sportster 48 1200cc and I love it

@@evajackson1444 yea I'm a skinny dude at 5'10 and I've made my 48 look like a little guys dyna and I have 0 complaints. I have 12' bars, tuner, intake, and a burly tall fairing. Sissy bar .... the works... if you didnt know harleys you'd think it was dyna

Thanks for the responses! Very helpful for many reasons, I think I'm at the point where I'm keeping an eye out for that sweet preowned deal but if not the softail standard being only 1k more brand new than a sportster 1200 I'd have to go for the Milwaukee 8 platform, otherwise if the irresponsible spender in me can convince myself to finance a new lowrider S it's a very tempting thought.
