It's pretty amazing to see what they did with just a few issues. Makes me miss compressed storytelling when so many comics stretch their stories for longer than necessary these days.

Matt Draper that’s because back in the 80’s, there wasn’t a trade paperback format, it was rare for stories to get reprinted( which is ironic considering that the title only survived as reprints until Bryne took over), meaning if you missed an issue, you were usually lost in terms of plot, since they didn’t have recap pages back then. So each issue and story “ mattered” more. Nowadays, we’re spoiled on the “ write for the trade” mentality.

"Maybe they are destined to fail in a world..." He is going to say it! He is going to say the thing! A world that fears and hates them! "...Where prejudice holds ultimate power." ...Come on, Matt. Regardless, great video as always! I love how big this story seems in retrospective and how you managed to amplify its importance. I think tragedy is one of those things that really defines the X-Men: Their enemy is hate and prejudice, and those are so engraved in the human psyche, that they can never truly win against it (Kind of like Batman's own Long Defeat)

Those are all classics. Some other classics worthy of consideration are Grant Morrison's New X-Men, Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force (maybe throw in Uncanny Avengers if you want since it's a direct continuation), Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four, Hickman's Avengers/New Avengers, Ed Brubaker's Captain America, Frank Miller's Daredevil, Brian Bendis's Daredevil, Bendis's Avengers (Avengers, New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Dark Avengers, I get some would contest this, but i love most of it, and it did for the Avengers in comics culture what Cleremont did for X-Men), JMS's Thor, JMS's Amazing Spider-Man, David Michelinie's Iron-Man, Michelinie's Amazing Spider-Man, and Tom DeFalco's Amazing Spider-Man.

When I saw all those gravestones with with all those names on it, I didn't even knew who all these characters were, but I knew they had a meaning. I kept reading the next issues, and characters mentioning the Death of Phoenix. I simply knew I had stepped into a rich world full of fantastic drama. Claremont's and Byrne's X-Men run will always have a very special place in my heart.

Actually, Days of Future Past was published in Oct. and Nov. of 1980. While it's a great story and a classic, I think some of its impact may have been diminished by how frequently writers have gone back to it, especially bringing Rachel Summers into the present. There's a trope I wouldn't mind seeing die: mutants coming from the future to join the X-Men in the present.

Matt, I absolutely love all of your submissions, but this one was particularly excellent. X-Men #142 was the first X-Men comic I ever read. I remember that my parents bought this issue for my brother while I got an obscure Fantastic Four Comic from the same timeframe for a trip we were making to New Orleans. I had just turned 10 years old and I can still remember reading the issue several times, drinking in the desperation and camaraderie that Logan, Ororo, Peter, and Kate had. I fell in love with the X-Men from that point on. Thanks for helping an old man remember his first love.

Despite the Phoenix Saga been the most iconic X-men story of all, DOFP stil one my favorites x-men stories as well one the best Chris Claremont work in the team. Even though is short story compare to his other works, still a great one, having sci-fy elements like time travel and alternative future, but also keeping the focus in the central theme of the x-men as characters : the fight against prejudice and discrimination. Plus the story does a great foreshadowing for the badass hero that Kitty Pryde would end up becoming later (this development is even better in the novel version). Considering that Marvel now has the x-men rights and will certanly introduce the mutants in the MCU, I think that, just like the avengers movie lead up to IW and Endgame, the MCU x-men movies could lead up to a new adaptation of Days of Future Past (or having some elements from the story), having the x-men, at the end of their trilogy, fighting not just to save the world but also to save the future of everyone, humans and mutants.

Love the ideas and messages of DOFP, especially that art. Sadly, in Hickman's run, it now seems the mutants are embracing the tools and bigotries of their opponents, because the X-Men are now a mutant-supremacist death cult. I'm fine with that as a story idea, but not as a default as if that's just normal, because that is a betrayal of the values of the X-Men. Thankfully, Hickman seems self-aware about this since HOX/POX established that Moira believes she has finally broken Xavier's ideals. I'll still go along for the journey, because I trust that Hickman will leave them in a positive position when all is said and done. He's already clearly shown that their current course is foolish and low key dystopian.

I honestly think the movie was better than the comic. It was more consequential, more emotional and more dramatic.

Time travel themed plotlines have been overused by Marvel in their comicbooks to the point that it becomes so ridiculous. Same goes to DC Comics by which the timelines of their series have become convoluted.

No comments about the movie? Let me guess. You all hate the movie? But to me, the movie is better crafted than the comic ever was or could ever hope to be

That sounds awful to read. I do hate time travel stories. But ones that never reach anything but a horrifying ending? Ugh.
