I think the way it's presented is a bit misleading. Some people think they are serious and train hard, but they actually do very little. How many guys do you often see in the gym, regulars, just doing a bunch of bench, some cardio and go home? There's definitely people training a lot harder than other people. Sure, pro athletes is another thing, but for the general public I think this is very wrong.

I had a phase several years back where I trained calves 2-3x week 12-18 sets a week doing half 5-10 rep sets and half 15-20 reps and they absolutely looked better. Very vascular and defined but they really weren’t bigger either. The bit on calves hits close to home. Growing up skinny, I had shamefully small calves starting off. I eventually just started hammering away at my calves, just feeding them with an obscene frequency and volume. But once they reached a level where it didn't look like I skipped every single leg day ever, I just stopped and they shrunk about an inch since. Moral of the story is train your calves if it's really bothering you but it's just eventually pointless if you're not a bodybuilder and there will always be a father of 3 who never exercised with calves twice the size of yours.
@Aybo1000
@Aybo1000 Жыл бұрын
I mean that makes perfect sense though. If you stop training any muscle it will shrink. What you need is high volume to make them grow and then go down to a maintenance volume to keep the size there.

When I was 19 years old, I took a flat dose of 5 mg dbol a day, for 40 days with my breakfast. Among other things, I didn't have money for more or for anything else. My bench press went from 105 kg to 135 kg on the 40th day exactly. 3 months later without taking anything, my bench was still 135 kg, I didn't lose any of the strength. Before that cycle, I had 3-4 years of lifting experience (not like following a program or something, just casual gym goer). I had a 3 months plateau at 105 kg on the bench before I started the dbol and it wasn't moving up.

@@jamiealexander7065 I have taken few more times low dosages of stuff later. That first time, I didn't have money for more plus 5 mg was a very good dose, as you can see my bench went up with 30 kg in 40 days, these results are incredible as far as I know. In fact, it might have been better if I took even lower dose, say 2 mg, for a longer period like 16 weeks. Also, if you don't know, low doses keep your receptors sensitive. The higher the dose, the more your receptors lose sensitivity.

I’ve been training my calves with moderate volume, a few reps from failure each set, 4-5 days a week for a little over a year now. They’ve definitely grown, probably less than an inch though, and I have a calf vein where none were visible before. I think people just treat calves like an after thought, bouncing the reps, going super hard but only once or twice a week, and stopping after 3 months. Honestly most people train calves the way I train arms, and there’s a reason I have shit arms.

That last one was pretty accurate. You can only train so hard, seriously. Recovery will limit you and you'll go backwards. I would say the only purpose of training calves in strength context is injury prevention when you're doing a lot of plyometrics. I used to train for vertical jump about 10 years ago, and when I neglected calf training I started to get Achilles tendinopathy. I think it must have been the blood flow to the tendon and some modest tendon strengthening. I do have to disagree on hypertrophy though. It goes without saying most people with small calves rarely train their calves, because most people don't train calves to begin with. You have to hit them with a ton of volume but also some lower rep sets. People love to cheat the range of motion and only do the top concentric portion, neglecting the weighted stretch. Calves are pretty immune to stimulus since you walk and take stairs with them, so it takes pretty high volume, intensity, and frequency for them to grow. If you're a bodybuilder it might be worth it, but it's a big commitment for the average gymgoer.

I totally agree with you point about people saying they are better because they train harder and although I don’t believe training harder will ever trump consistency I do think the average gym goer needs to train harder. I guess that’s a whole other conversation maybe make a video about training and how to keep making progress and not getting injured in the process. After coming back from a tricep tear I wish I could go back and do things differently

Pretty sure I relatively easily hit well over 200g protein per day for over a year. That's 2 cooked 1 pound sirloins and 2 and 1/4 cups of Fage brand Greek Yogurt. Doesn't even include the chicken. May not be cheap but very doable.

I think something to add: people preying on new lifters. Claiming transparency, to have all the secrets, etc… then moments later are directing you to some product they are affiliated with as if that is the single key element to their progress

About protein and eggs...you can buy a 5 dozen cartoon at Walmart for about $10. Used to be $5 a few years ago, but still a pretty good price. That's 60 eggs. At around 6 grams of protein, that's 360 grams of protein for $10. Not too bad. I don't think anyone can eat that much per day though, or even half or it

I have to disagree with the calves and the training hard part. The calves grow like any other muscle. Intensity matters massively when hitting prs, most people dont train hard enough.

Yeah people just don't do enough variations for calves. They'll do 2 calf exercises but then do 20 for arms and then say their calves didn't grow the same. I do agree with the genetic part for certain people but you can definitely improve them.

It is the most genetically dependent muscle though Especially insertions...if you have very high insertions you're screwed.

Most of the people earning 6, 7 and even 8 figures off social media fitness and modeling aren't competitive athletes so I have always assumed their drug use is unpredictable aside from excessive. *I don't doubt they do a lot of healthy living but just as much unhealthy and with recreational drugs.* This is reason enough for the competitive athletes to just tell the truth.

I eat 5500 calories a day and get 300g of protein for £45 a week. All vegan. 800g of tofu, 100g of seitan, 250g of peanut butter, 500g of rice, 200g cereal. 6"9 140kg.

As an approach towards training I find myself agreeing with Matt Wenning. There's always someone with better genetics so the only way to be the best is to outlive everyone else in the sport

having strong claves will make you run faster, if you have tight calves you cant really walk for very long without some strain. They arent useless at all.
