They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics - an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology.
Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. Dr. Alan Goldhamer is the co-founder of TrueNorth Health Center, a state-of-the-art facility that provides medical and chiropractic services, psychotherapy and counseling, as well as massage and bodywork. He is also director of the Center's groundbreaking residential health education program.
Dr. Goldhamer has supervised the fasts of thousands of patients. Under his guidance, the Center has become one of the premier training facilities for doctors wishing to gain certification in the supervision of therapeutic fasting.
Dr. Goldhamer was the principal investigator in two landmark studies. The first: "Medically Supervised Water-Only Fasting in the Treatment of Hypertension" appeared in the June 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. Its publication marked a turning point in the evolution of evidence supporting the benefits of water-only fasting. The second study: "Medically Supervised Water-Only Fasting in the Treatment of Borderline Hypertension," appeared in the October 2002 issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
Currently, Dr. Goldhamer is directing a team that is developing a prospective study, incorporating random assignment and long-term follow-up on the cost and clinical outcomes in the treatment of diabetes and high blood pressure with fasting and a health-promoting diet.
After completing his chiropractic education at Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Goldhamer traveled to Australia, where he became licensed as an osteopathic physician. He is the author of The Health Promoting Cookbook and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering The Hidden Force That Undermines Health and Happiness.

I listened to the audiobook of The Pleasure Trap (twice) in 2020 and it changed the way I approach food. Four years later those changes are still foundational to my daily diet. It's rare that a book can change your life.

After decades of binge-eating and yo-yo dieting, even suicide ideation, inability to work/socialise, etc. I too listened to Chef AJ, Dr Lisle and Dr Goldhamer and it was surprisingly easy to just go cold turkey on processed and trigger foods. It really is the environment. I thought I couldn't live without pizza, pastry, etc. (because I was addicted to them), but I just stopped ordering them online and I am not tempted to buy them when I go out either. I don't see them as food and now if the food bank gives me these items, because I don't see them as food and they contain animal products, I just feed them to the neighbourhood foxes or there is always some helpful crow or pigeon or other birds who need to feed their cubs/chicks with high-energy food. The solution is surprisingly simple and for me it was easy too as I love simple food and I don't mind eating the same thing every day for dinner (huge bowl of oil-free veggie soup) or every second day, I learnt to cook from scratch simple delicious WFPB meals, oil-free and sugar-free, and I love my food so much, and my belly is so full that my cravings have virtually gone. Being an ethical vegan also helps, yes, I still daydream about my Italian granny's lovely childhood food occasionally, but I can't have it because it's all based on animal products (eggs, meat, butter, etc.) and my lovely grandma's gone, but I'll always have the memories. I don't look for vegan substitutes for pastry, cheese, etc., I simply don't enquire about these products, I stick to the good wholefoods, there's enough of them that I love, more than enough in fact, so there's amazing healthy goodness and variety and I don't need any more. I stick to the lower calorie density foods so thank you Chef AJ and the doctors for confirming that nobody needs to eat a particular food, e.g. nuts, seeds, beans, even wholegrains (I prefer squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes and chestnuts to wholegrains). All my blood tests are perfect and I am very slim (which is what I've always wanted to be and ideal for my very petite frame). I have maintained my happy weight for 4 years now and there's no way I'm ever going back, I trust myself now and I have learnt to separate feelings from feeding. I never thought I could be this compliant, but when the food is so good and the quantities are big (I remain a volume eater) you just feel fantastic - and I look great in clothes for the first time ever, cool even, age 58. It's never too late, we older women rock! Best wishes, everyone.

Happy birthday AJ 🎉. You are truly inspiring! This was a fantastic episode, I could listen to these two for hours. My personality is overly conscientious and I have quite strict guidelines for myself in saying that I love my food and living this lifestyle has transformed my life. Unfortunately my 18 year old beautiful daughter with a very addictive personality is struggling with depression and food addiction. She is overweight and is trying to lose it by calorie restriction, therefore still eating ice cream, pizza etc. I have tried to explain to her that it is a slippery slope and she needs to cut out the processed high fat sugary foods but she is not ready to listen. I have given your book to her to read but I don’t think she is ready to read it. I really worry for her health. Thank you for all the work you do. You are helping do many people 😊

I follow this program very strictly (really I do). Two comments that for me sum up people’s attitude toward healthy eating and their ignorance about food addiction are “wow! You have so much will power to always resist ‘treats’” to this I say, “not at all, I have little willpower, this is why I avoid processed food, I have no control over it”. The second comment I get is “wow! You look great, so healthy, I’m so jealous” to this I say “it was with great effort to shift my mindset and change my lifestyle,I didn’t win the lottery” just funny how people think that 1. They could never do this and that 2. They think I’m just lucky, no…it was hard work to change, it’s easy now, not it in the beginning.

“Who eats Ezekiel bread without putting anything on it?” I eat plain Ezekiel toast every morning. Sometimes I put plain beans and tomatoes on it. Toasting it is key though. I’m also the kind of person who struggles to gain weight so there’s no risk in overeating. I have to force feed if I want to gain weight (muscle).

"I eat plain Ezekiel toast every morning. Sometimes I put plain beans and tomatoes on it." That is great for you! You are so nice and disciplined! "I’m also the kind of person who struggles to gain weight so there’s no risk in overeating." I am so jealous of you! I gain weight easily! "I have to force feed if I want to gain weight (muscle)" As you gain weight on "force feed(ing)," you probably gain both fat and muscle.

I really hate that he brings up simone biles. She's one of the most talented and accomplished gymnasts in our time. She had a bad week timed with the week of the Olympics during a global pandemic. I dont even begin to judge yer decision to not complete in one event. Lol. But thats cool i still enjoy hearing the e.p. wind out I have a good fried sleeps about two hours a night. Hes always been that way. He swims about two miles a day and has a lovely family stable partner and stable dream job. He just does not sleep. Nobody knows why. ? Its not because hes not active. Nor is it because he doesn't get outside in nature. Hes a surfer, outdoors a lot and very fit.

Here is what I think of the Blue Zones. Some of them eat fish, and fish probably only makes up a very small part of the diet. I started to switch to WFP eating 13 years ago, and plan to continue for the rest of my life. I know I don’t need any fish to have optimal health.

Excellent talk. Having experienced a complete collapse of testosterone, I can tell you we are not who we think we are. This hormone is dictating the very thoughts in our head. It's just empty peaceful space in there without it. I also believe that testosterone is the fountain from which loneliness pours. The hormone feels like loneliness. Men suffer from loneliness more than women in my experience, they have a lot more of the hotmone. This plus the physical need drives men to ask for all those phone numbers and dates.

I wouldn’t laugh at people who include nuts and seeds for brain health and longevity. There is some data suggesting they help in this regard. I am one of the people who can eat one or two ounces and not be addicted so I do for health reasons. Different strokes. My BMI is 19.5. I sprinkle a variety of seeds and nuts on my salad. I’m not worried.

“Dieters are liars” ; I think Dr. G point can be expanded. I think this is yet again a protective measure of the human race to not “lie” but “forget pain”. Ie. If we remembered the pain & fear of fighting off a wild animal, we may never leave the cave again. If we remember/feel the excruciating pain of childbirth, we may not be inclined to procreate again. Would be interesting to study that in depth Dr. L…:)
