Love my MacGregor VIP blades. I learned on my MacGregor’s and the 7 iron loft 35 degrees. I have been gaming a set of P790’s this season and don’t get me wrong they feel great but nothing feels as soft or sound as good as my MacGregor’s. Because the old school blades don’t have much, if any, forgiveness they make me concentrate more on setup and tempo, making me a better player.

I bought these on ebay in 2008 almost brand new and in my specs as something to practice with to help my ball striking. I fell in love and they've never left my bag. It forces concentration on every shot and the feel of hitting that tiny sweet is so addicting that I can't go back to hitting cavity backs.

These were actually my first set of “new” irons I played. Worked at a country club and was gifted a set of these. Hit 100-200 balls a day off the grass. These clubs feel amazing when you hit a pure shot. Feels so effortless and efficient.

LMAO!!! I thought the same thing. I started playing with blades in 2005 during my senior year of high school and I've been playing them since. Have I lost some yards, "yes", can I still shape shots even though I might be hitting 8i from 150-160, "yes", and lastly would I consider newer irons (vs my 690mb set) HECK NO. Why? Because manufacturers want $899 before fitting for 5-pw, lol. Get out of here with that madness. None the less, I enjoyed the video and enjoy many of SAS Golf videos :-) Keep grinding.

Been playing them since I was 15 now I’m 30 still can’t hit another iron better then them. No one I play with can come close to me in driver distance like 35 to 50 yards behind me but they are shocked when when it the same irons I’m then I have to explain to them about old school loft vs the new game of them tricking them into thinking they hit the ball further. # +2 handicap have to say though i play about 5 shots worse with my t100-s nothing compares to a blade only way to play golf

Started playing blades and never knew about GI irons until i broke my back, leg and foot. I hate GI irons and they're taylormade and not rubbish. But i am trying to get my swing back and there's no better way to learn than sticking that fork in the wall outlet and learning lessons. Put your head down and swing and keep swinging until you get better. Love the videos, Simon. They've pushed me to get back on the links :)

I taught myself to play with a set of original wilson button back irons. Best way to force yourself to learn ball striking. I play old mp67s 2-pw because I prefer the look at address much more than any other iron. I had some Callaway CB irons from 2012 (what ever they were called) and even the slight offset they had made me feel like the ball was always going to go straight left. One thing I tell people when they ask me what they should do for better iron striking is to get a cheap set of used blades off ebay and regrip them. $150 for the best iron training aid that you can actually use if you wanted.

When I started playing there were only blades. In winter they can hurt a little if you hit them thin, but when you hit them out of the middle, there's no better feeling in golf. That feeling is worth any kind of punishment you might get. And with those lofts, you don't need a gap wedge, and the lofts are high enough you might even be able to hit your 3-iron. I'd love to have them in my winter bag to replace my old Wilson FG17 blades.

If you could get a hold of them... some old school Spalding Robert T Jones Kro-Flite blades (those are some proper steel shafted blades!) fun tip for a new video... I have a sand wedge with a negative bounce angle (-2* of bounce) that I use to practice out of the bunker... If you can find one ( or make one ) you could show the gains from practicing with one. It's a bit like you said in this video... Make your practice challenging, to make golf easy.

I wasn't allowed to get anymore clubs until I could hit that well, upon which, I received a 7 and a 9 of the same set. Compared the 6 iron with my modern 6 iron (JPX 919 Tour) and the older 6 iron was 1 inch shorter. Then I checked all the clubs and all was 1 inch shorter to the equal iron from my JPX model. ook them out for a spin and boy they are harder to hit,. Awesome! I learned the game playing Ram Blades. Also Ram persimmon driver and 4 wood (loved the 4 wood as a kid). I had a set of Taylormade RAC my wife got me for wedding 15 years ago. I switched to Rocketbladz II and for the next few years played terrible golf. I hit it a long way but not accurate so I loose on average six balls a round. I went back to RAC and would loose 1 or 2. I think because they are not forgiving and don’t go as far on off center hits. I’d love to see if I wouldn’t play better with these. I was a much better golf her at 18 then I am now.

I still use my 695MB irons. I love them, so much easier to tell when you're off the sweet spot, and helped to hone my swing much more than the various GI irons I tried. I can't get over looking down at monster headed cavity back irons when addressing the ball, not confidence inspiring for me at all. I use corded grips as well, so you get lots of feedback as to where the club face made impact, which also helps me to improve.

Still got the 1 iron. Every time someone says they are a great iron player, I go and get it, ask them to hit that! In the 90's it was my favourite club apart from my putter!! Back in the 70's had Wilson Staff tour blade FG17, still the most winning club. They were un forgiving, along with my Hogan persimmons! Just bought a net, practice balls, a mat, and am looking at getting the Rapsodo simulation "game" to get some good practice in this winter.

I agree that confidence is super important. If I lineup my shot and get addressed and I'm not confident... My swing just isn't natural. I get tense or swing too hard.

I still play my '84 Hogan Apex PCs. I tried Titleist 735.CM irons, but went back. Before these, I played '72 Apexes. They don't look scary to me, they just look right. I tried the new Hogan Icon blades, but they offered only marginally more forgiveness. If I'm playing well, the PCs are a joy, and playing them costs me nothing in terms of score. If I'm not, well no irons are going to save me more than a shot or two. I was once told my 1980 BMW 528i needed $4,000 of repairs after I bent the clutch. I told my mechanic that while I could buy a Yugo for this amount, I'd have to drive it. I'll admit to never being much good with the 1 iron in the set, but the 2 iron has always been a friend, especially for hitting low shots under or through trees. I do have to admit that after trying them, the siren call of the Srixon ZX7 irons almost got me.

I bought a set of these back when they came out. I still have the 695MB 2 iron in my bag because it is do easy to hit. To me they're definitely the easiest blades I've ever used, slightly less workable than the set I'm playing with for that reason. Very interesting to see how different people experience feel definitely.

Funny, those 695 MB are supposed to be the easiest to hit blades ever produced according to maltby playability factor with an mpf of 523. The Mizuno mp-20 is mpf 478. Higher mpf is easier to hit

I have no doubt that I would struggle to hit any of the long or even mid irons but I think the short irons will work great. This could work nicely in a blended set. Send them my way, please.

Simon those blades look fantastic. I'd love to have them to learn to hit the sweet spot better. I still remember the tingle in my knuckles from an off centre strike in winter with blades.

I just picked up a set of Titleist ZM’s in great condition. I like them so much I think they are going to kick my i59’s from the bag.

I never hit any blade iron. I guess i would struggle a lot by changing my iron set for practising in winter and then must go back to my new p790. The switch would take me a lot of time to get used to my p790 again. Don't really know why i should punish myself with blades, but its maybe worth a try. Great contents!

Great vid Simon, to have these would give me a better understanding of where my shots are going. I've always said, you need to train harder than you play the game.

Been playing golf for over a year now with a second-hand set of big and heavy cleveland irons, would love to try blades over the holidays to practice with. :)

Those are beautiful irons! My game has gone downhill fast over the past years, but I note no real differences between my scores when I play "game improvement" clubs or when I try blades. Longer irons are easier with the shovels, but my short game is better with the blades and their good feel.
