Thank you so much for sharing. I myself struggle with not shopping(secondhand/vintage) to self soothe. Because frankly, I have more anxiety and sadness than I have income. Especially in these times.

Interesting commentary. I have an amazing wardrobe. I love my wardrobe SO MUCH!! I have bought such beautiful pieces at a variety of Thrift stores and a smaller portion of my wardrobe is from retail stores. I have an older brother. He has watched me over the years enjoying my wardrobe, and putting a lot of thought and effort into accumulating my current (fabulous) wardrobe. (I am not bragging that I have a fabulous wardrobe, I am saying that so ppl can learn that Thrift Stores can be gold mines.) Well the whole point I wish to make here is what my older brother said about my clothes. He said "Nobody cares Clair. Noooobody cares!!!" He freed me in that moment. COMPLETELY. Nobody cares what I wear. Now I dress like Paris Hilton. (Not that I have EVER been a fan on Paris Hilton.) Paris Hilton was giving a tour of her closet. She explained "when I wake up I ask myself what COLOR do I FEEL like wearing today". So NOW!!!!! I ask myself what color do I feel like wearing while keeping in mind, nobody cares what I wear. PS I haven't gone into any debt for my wardrobe. My wardrobe has been like an enjoyable hobby. But I am going to try to do a few years NO BUY. I love to shop my closet.

This is true. Once you have a wardrobe, you should dress for mood, rather than anything else.

Thank you for making this video, it was really interesting! I am in my early 20s and have been wearing 1930s-1950s fashion for a few years now, and have been thinking on and off about questions similar to yours - am I overconsuming, am I trying to justify overconsumption through the fact that what I buy is second hand, am I reducing myself as a woman to something frivolous, do people see me solely as somebody who 'wears nice things' etc etc. It's refreshing to see a more contemplative, critical approach to vintage style, and to know that I'm not alone in (possibly!) overthinking things!

Thank you for sharing. Many people are quite superficial, and hence consider the people around them in a superficial way. I can definitely relate, having a classically pretty face, a lot of people have commented on my pretty face, without having the curiosity to know me on a deeper level. I have found that when I do meet people who show genuine curiosity, I spend a lot more time with them!

Imho ur style seems more comfy now, and you seem more authentic, not being reduced to style. Your hair pulls it all together. What I often struggle with is not looking vintage enough/not finding a comfortable or useful vintage equivalent to a modern item, mostly raincoats and winter wear. I stopped trying too much and I just ... buy what I can and use what I have

Interesting reflections. Appreciate you sharing. It feels that there is a largely if not entirely unnecessary guilt underpinning your thinking here. I dislike the notion of "consumption" in the now-popular perjrorative sense of the concept. Almost everything we do is, in effect, a form of economic consumption -- including you making this very video. In and of itself consumption seems like a neutral phenomenon to me. What is worth looking down upon is meaningless, shallow, mindless, self-destructive and/or blatantly wasteful consumption. But your interest in vintage style clearly has little and perhaps nothing to do with the any of these things. It does not seem to be motivated by the desire to purchase for the sake of purchasing or something like this. Rather, it seems mainly motivated by the appreciation of beauty in quite a refined sense -- something which is arguably one of the most meaningful pursuits in life and has been recognized as such for thousands of years of human history. Perhaps your framing of this issue is getting you into trouble?

I think most people in the western world have gone through those things. It is called learning and growth. You are NOT so different than anyone else. I have debt because I was in school late in life and I used credit cards for food. I used to have a job that paid me fantastically during the summer and I always paid everything off each summer. Unfortunately, the pandemic hit and my job died with it. I don't worry about it. I pay what I can and move on. Life is full of ups and downs. I wanted to be a special education preschool teacher, but a couple of months after I received my teaching credential I was diagnosed with cancer and I have had many operations due to cancer and bad back problems so I am now retired and I have little money on a fixed income.
