@@pmy643 well Mai is probably the only one. But I personally don't dig the idea that all the characters are so young. It makes most of the action barely believable and makes some scenes fairly awkward. I don't understand why the writers would pick ages like 14 for Azula, 16 for Zuko, 14 for Ty Lee and 14 for Katara. That makes it very hard to identify with these characters, because the mental struggles and childhood traumas everyone goes through could very well still be a topic if they were all 3 years older, which would be more according to actual people in real life. It makes at least me feel slightly insecure that these characters deal with such deep topics (mostly) successfully at such a young age and puts them in general above the average viewer also considering their physical abilities

@@dontmindme6995 I’m pretty sure the writers made Azula and them 14 for the same reason Katara is. To show how even the war has affected the fire nation youth, being forced to grow up. Adultification. And having the maturity to talk about those topics and do things that other teens their age wouldn’t be doing. The episode “The Beach”. And of course, to bring home the point that Azula is perfect and “born lucky” because she accomplished so many things at a young age. Mean while Zuko is the opposite, at least in the eyes of their father. And even if you’re not able to relate to the characters, you should at least come out of the show with a better understanding of them.

I imagined Kitara had to carry a lot of personal guilt as she personally felt being responsible for her mother’s death, despite no one ever blaming her. The scene where Kitara snapped at Sokkha, where she accused him of not loving their mom as much as she does, was both hurtful and untrue. But, I do understand why she’d snapped and the emotional state was at. People, oftentimes, vent all of our frustrations onto the people who’s closest to us, say hurtful things we don’t mean, and regret our actions when we hurt the people we love. The Southern Raiders episode was an important episode because it had to remind everyone, that Kitara isn’t perfect, she’s a human being, dealing with some real emotional trauma but suppresses her own mental health, so she can take care of everyone else. Kitara didn’t have a healthy outlet to release her emotions and her angrily lashing out at everyone, doesn’t feel “out of character” for her.

While I agree, Sokka most likely lashed out due to envy. When the Gaang used their bending abilities to put out a meteor, he felt very bad that he couldn't do anything to help and said they were cool. It works either way, with him unintentionally isolating her with his belittling comments, while her being the only waterbender in the SWT served as a constant reminder that he's nobody special. A generation xerox with Katara's kids in the Legend of Korra, which digs deeper into the topic.

The Southern Raiders/Katara's revenge storyline is probably one of my favorite episodes of the entire show because it made Katara's character even more complex by showing that it is natural to feel angry and want revenge since someone like her is even capable of feeling such things. What was truly important about that episode though is that we shouldn't allow the loss of a loved one consume us and change who we are which is why Katara didn't kill her mother's killer.

Back in the southern raiders episode, back in 2007, I never understood why everyone was surprised and startled by Katara’s revenge intention. Why should Katara being full of rage surprise us? Why, because throughout the show we are shown how loving she is? I didn’t think anything of that crap because no matter who you are, everyone has a dark side; even the nicest of people; shouldn’t all of us know that? Everyone is complex. Back when I was 7, I had a reading tutor who would hit me with a hammer anytime I got a question wrong, at 14 I was punched in the jaw by my aunt for something I didn’t do, and when I came back home from school to complain about the bullying I was experiencing, my aunts and grandparents did absolutely nothing, I suffered in silence of no one wanting to hear me out and you know what my principal told me? How is it after everything you went through, you remain respectful to all the elders and teachers at my school and never get into trouble at school and never showed any abusive behavior towards women? People are complex, I am complex and you don’t know what goes on people. Katara’s quest for revenge is nothing to be surprised about; we all have a duality.

I think people just got tired of the frankly repetive memes that the newcomers to the fandom make. Katara was never a hated character, at least not to the degree that the new fans do. I think really is because a lot of them watched the whole thing in like a week or a few weeks, whereas old fans had to see her grow from season to season, and it took them years to process the changes and appreciate them as they came. When you binge the whole thing, it doesn't have the same effect. I think a lot of the new fans too are starting to come down from all the memes and jokes and hype and whatever and starting to analyze the series more deeply, now that some time has passed.

I guess at least some people wake up from the constant Katara hating for literally everything she does. "She's talking about her dead mom too much", "Shes annoying", "She's whining", "She's a nag". etc. I'm glad people finally understand how much of a complex and deeply hurt character Katara actually is. It's so upsetting, to me as a kid she's always been an amazing character. In the very first episode Katara and Aang go penguin riding, and Katara says something like "I haven't done something like that since I was kid" and Aang responses with "You Still are Katara". That perfectly sums up her situation, she was forced to give up her childhood and grow up fast and mature to an unhealthy extended, to fulfill her role as caretaker.

I think a lot of the criticisms Katara gets by fans is that she’s this perfect “ Mary Sue” type character. She’s beautiful, strong willed, an incredibly talented water bender, a fierce warrior in battle, while also being perfectly kind hearted and level headed. Those criticisms do have some legit merits, but episodes like The Puppet Master and The Southern Raiders is when Katara truly shines as a very multifaceted and complex character. We as the audience really get to know Katara on a more personal level as we get to understand her personal trauma and the emotional weight she has to carry on her own all throughout the show. For anyone who wants to criticize Katara as being a one dimensional Mary Sue, should really rewatch those two episodes again.

It’s more than the death of her mother, it’s also dealing with survivor’s guilt. Katara, most likely, blamed herself for her mother’s death with her being the last water bender in her tribe and the fire nation’s attempt to kill all water benders.
@bwminich
@bwminich 3 жыл бұрын
One very interesting thing about the Fire Nation’s particular focus on Water Benders - There has to be a fear that when they started the war by killing the Air Nomads, they didn’t get the Avatar. That at any time, the Avatar might have died and then been reborn as a Water Bender. So from that perspective, their focus on eliminating all Water Benders from the tribe they can overpower makes a lot of sense.

I read a theory that Hama's escape is the reason why the Southern Raiders went to the South Pole to capture the last bender. They didnt know Katara existed; they knew the last water bender had escaped their prison. Moreover, the Fire Nation used to capture; Kiya says as much. But the fire nation changed their policy. Why? Because a water bender was able to take control of Fire Nation bodies, and that's terrifying. So it is death to all water benders. So it is death to Katara's mother because of Hama's escape.

These people just don't care about actual character nuance and development or writing or anything. When I mention shounen and DBZ it's not to say that they're devoid of any good character writing, but it's just all those people focus on. That's all they gravitate to and while of course that's fine, yknow to each their own, it's just so disappointing to know what they're missing all because they can't find the energy to focus.

@@mojackoche1698 "(save for the girls and her brother)" I know she had crushes on just girls. The same way I know Katara doesn't crush on "damaged" people (which really just means people with tragic backstories). If that were true she would have started crushing on Jet and Aang and even Haru just because she heard their backstories(and sympathized with them) which wasn't the case. It'd be more accurate to say she liked guys with hero archetypes because she started crushing on Jet when he presented himself to be a hero and a leader, but became increasingly hurt when she found out she wasn't who he thought he was. Katara didn't even have a crush on Zuko in the first place, much less like him until book three. Antoine's analysis would be incorrect because the comparison he made is not substantial. I think the cool thing about avatar is that is made for both kids and adults. I just watched it now that is on Netflix. I'm 35. And it's seriously one of the best (animated) shows I've ever seen. It's got a lot of depth and mature content that is very enjoyable for an adult. I got my mom to watch it shortly afterwards and she even watched faster than I did. Just watched one season a day. And she told me she almost watched both seasons 2 and 3 in one day but she just wanted to pause and enjoy the season's 2 ending. We hold had videocalls commenting the show and all that... so yeah, it might have been crafted as a kids show... But it's surely so much more than that.

The fact that both parents and their children can watch without exploitation via hyper sexualization is honestly why I'm starting to value proper children's programming again. I like anime but the fact that there isn't much proper mature storytelling while also taking the young into account bothers me a lot. Storytelling and good characters help children see themselves in the characters while also helping them understand the overall message and intentions of said story.

Let's not forget that the very reason the fire nation returned to the southern water tribe looking for a waterbender, they're not looking for Katara. They're looking for Hama, the one and only southern water bender to escape them. They assumed Hama would have gone back home, rather than hide in the fire nation. This is why they did not take Katara's mother prisoner. It's also likely that they killed any other still imprisoned southern water benders after she escaped, using a technique they hadn't seen before, to prevent it ever happening again. In an indirect (Direct?) way, Hama's escape is the reason Katara's mother was killed.

I don't think the timelines add up (Hama is still relatively young when she escapes compared to her advanced age in Book 3) and if the Fire Nation kept any type of records there's no way they'd consider Katara or her mother to be the last Waterbender, they're both too young. More likely Hama's escape and the way in which she did it forced the Fire Nation into believing taking prisoners was no longer viable.

Senaru Ryuin this is merely a fan-made theory. There’s no evidence to this, and frankly it makes no sense since Hama would’ve been really old when Kya died, and the Fire nation would’ve been looking for an older lady. Not to mention that it makes no sense for them to look for Hama YEARS after she escaped?
@LM-ix7pk
@LM-ix7pk 3 жыл бұрын
I think you’ve got it a bit wrong. Hama is indirectly the cause of Katara’s mom’s death, but it’s not because the Fire Nation was looking for Hama. It’s because Hama was Southern Water Tribe and she escaped by using bloodbending. So, the Fire Nation thought that all waterbenders of the southern tribe could have this ability. They wanted to kill the last southern waterbender instead of taking him/her prisoner because that waterbender would still be a threat even behind bars, so the Fire Nation saw no choice but to kill. Of course Katara was “the one” and she was supposed to die that day, but her mother sacrificed herself. So basically Katara lost her mother because the Fire Nation wanted to destroy the last southern waterbender since they were afaird that they could do what Hama did.

I'd just like to mention that at the beginning, you were talking about YA, but were using Middle Grade examples. YA is typically written with 13-17 year old characters and aimed towards that age range, while Middle Grade is aimed for kids around the age of 8-12. I don't think these terms are typically used in the film and tv industry, but I do like that you brought up the question of if ATLA was made for adults or kids. I'm sure the answer is both. Good stories should be able to work for all ages and our putting stories in boxes for certain ages doesn't do anyone justice. Pixar is a good example of this. Because it's owned by Disney and animated, people say they're for kids- but in The Incredibles we have a 40 something Bob Parr as our main character going through a mid life crisis. In Finding Nemo we have a parent whose wife's death leads him to be overprotective of his disabled son. They're told in ways that are entertaining for kids and not too violent or depressing, but that doesn't mean an adult can't get as much "entertainment" out of it. It's these sorts of stories that stand the test of time. The ones that include heart and depth. So I'd still say that ATLA was made for both adult and kids, just like Pixar movies. I can't tell you if their intent was "well, parents are going to end up watching this a dozen times, so we might as well make it enjoyable for them" or that they just wanted to make their content amazing, but I would assume the latter. Creators typically want to make something they'll be proud of and would watch themselves. Otherwise, what's the point? You know, something that'll quench ya. And ATLA? Nothing's quenchier. It's the quenchiest.
@KalinTheZola

When I was in school I don't think I ever actually heard the term "middle-grade" to describe books. Or at least I really don't remember that term ever being brought up. I mean, I'm 28 now so it's possible I just forgot the term, but I just remember the term "Young adult".
@gymnastgirlflips
@gymnastgirlflips 3 жыл бұрын
@@KalinTheZola It's more a term used in book publishing. For people trying to get agents to publish their books, they'd use terms like "It's a Middle Grade fantasy novel". YA is really popular, so most people know what that is, but Middle Grade is more an insider/professional term.

@beausheffield1895 3 жыл бұрын
I think you’re referring to Percy Jackson, the series does start when he’s 12, but ends when he’s 16. The books also gain a lot of depth as the series progresses so I would classify it as YA even though the first book would be considered middle grade.

Yepp, because I was a Zutara shipper and that's exactly how I felt about their characters. Their need to make a difference in the world due to the war costing the lives of their mothers (Katara literally and Zuko temporarily) is what convinced me that they would make sense as a couple. Also, it made their characters a lot more complex and relatable.

The fact that Zuko opens up to her pretty quickly (all things considered) and Katara didn't treat him like a brother for a good chunk of the show really solidified it. That and Katara and Aang IDOLISE each other and that's not good for a healthy relationship. Pedestals are never good. So having Zuko and Katara be the parents of the group in season 3 and see each other on even footing was definitely a ship booster.

Correct me if I’m wrong but in my opinion Katara reminds me of Shinobu Kocho of Demon Slayer like the way she adopted a motherly behavior to fill the void that her mother left definitely looks a lot like what shinobu did. Indeed before her sister died she was completely her opposite she was hot headed, tough and all but when her sister died (rip Kanae Kocho ) she completely adopted her sister’s behavior and habit like her way of smiling, her compassionate and optimistic nature and all. I really thinks that this can be way for some people to react to their close relation’s death. So Here it was just a link that I have seen between this two amazing and powerful characters !

No one talks about this but Katara basically goes on the same journey like Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars Prequels. They both lost a mother, had childhood trauma, and at the very end both have a choice to either choose the light or the dark. We all know their outcomes but I would've killed to see an alternate version of the Legend of Korra where an older Katara is the main antagonist similar to Darth Vader. Katara can even wear a handicap outfit that looks similar to the masked lady due to how badly injured she got after betraying her friends.

However it does make me wonder how the various Nations got to be the size that they are anyway. I mean for example even if they're in kingdoms the air nomads still seem to have their dedicated territory. Perhaps with the exception of the air nomads there was masks war or something and an ancient Avatar decided to split things equally among the four nations

I found this Theory a few days ago and I think it adds yet another layer to what you're saying When the Fire Nation came and killed to Kataras mother she offered herself up to be taken prisoner something we know that they did not do but if they were looking for the last waterbender Katara A 10(?) year old why would they think it was an adult But however if they would not looking for her they were looking for Hama how about who had demonstrated very dangerous ability, who had made waterbending prisons no longer A possible option It all starts to make a lot more sense Katara's mother was killed because hama escaped now onto the part that adds a layer to what you were saying about Katara Hama anger Ripple out to effect far more than just herself and those she had attacked to infected others was it wrong for her to escape hell no but what was wrong with the fact that she instead of taking that anger and destroying the source of her pain( the firelord the high court Etc) used it to attack innocent people and because she made that choice she not only became no better than those That had cause her pain but had in fact become worse has she helped perpetrate more pain( even indirectly )on the very people on the very people she should have been protecting this makes katara's eventual stooping to her level and then Rising above all the more powerful because she not only had learned to forgive (or least move on from) the people she had been hurt by but she unknowingly broke a cycle they could have gone on for many generations

Generally I can't stand the "child hero" storyline. I abandoned a lot of anime because it was nothing but pedo panty shots of apparently super-powered children. Unless it's a story where the child is growing up and you watch them progress, I guess Naruto is a good example, or as the Promised Neverland appears to be doing now, I generally roll my eyes at anything that mentioned high school or has children as the main characters. Avatar was diverse enough that it skirted past this, there are tons of support adult rolls that aid the child heroes involved.
