Jennifer Kate Berry, daughter of Jackie Joseph (The Doris Day Show) and Ken Berry (Mama's Family / Mayberry RFD / F Troop & Dr Kildare) passed away on September 21, 2020 in Toluca Lake, California, of natural causes and not in a car accident in the late 70's.

My brother had met Ken's son. As both were little kids, they had such good and happy times. Ken was very kind to my brother and didn't treat him like a pesky kid under foot but as a fun, quirky, mischievous kid that he was. Our family loved him.❤

My dad used to work at the studios as a laborer and was fortunate enough to work on the Mayberry RFD show. Ken Berry was someone who was approachable and nice to everyone. We would get a Christmas wreath from Ken Berry made at local boy's rehabilitation home each Christmas. It was sent with a personal note of thanks and well wishes for the season. ✌️❤️👍

As a kid I remember watching him on the show F Troop, Mayberry RFD and roles in other shows and movies. He even starred in one of the Herbie The Lovebug movies. It's sad that he and his wife had such heartbreaking losses with the deaths of their children but Berry showed a strength and will to not let those get him down and to keep performing. Just the other day I saw him on an episode of Mama's Family doing what he loved. Acting and entertaining. It's too bad that he's gone.

First movie i ever saw was herbie and the love bug, rides again at the theatre, i was @ 5,..my big sis took me, she was @ 16-17,...we went on the city bus downtown,...im 59 now,...a senior citizen im told,...i dont believe it,...nobody asked me if i were a senior c8tizen,..im not even retired, how can i be senior,?

It was tragic because he lost his children it was tragic because eventually he would lose his life and he wouldn't have any children either to him children with his life you can't and you cannot understand why it's tragic probably because you don't understand that while you survived it there's a part of you that's gone, and that doesn't make you a survivor it just makes you sad, some of the greatest comics and I know one personally are some of the saddest people you'll ever meet, let me clarify this I don't mean all of them just some of them. My father and others you used to tell me there is nothing more tragic than having your children die before you, as someone who has lost every person I've been close to I can tell you it is not something you simply survive and you don't get over it it remains with you forever some of the rawness and the edges go away but the pain is always there, so no I don't think it's disrespectful to call it tragic that's what people call a tragedy they call somebody who has tragedy after tragedy, tragic. And for Ken Berry it was indeed tragic, he loved having children so much he adopted two and that was after the loss of his own biological child, first he lost his daughter and then he lost his son I don't know if you had any grandchildren to comfort him but as I said before that pain is not something you get over. Imagine for a moment if someone you loved as much as you love your own life suddenly died even a loss of a parent isn't exactly the same in most cases we expect our parents to grow old and eventually die and while that hurts we know they had at least a good innings for the most part if they died when they were old, but as a parent I can tell you it is not the same, and when I was younger I didn't understand that. I really thought my parents were exaggerating I mean my father and you he had lost so much in his life he was a holocaust survivor and the way I understood why he was extremely overprotective of me in some cases but not enough in others, when you lose everyone close to you the loss of a child can be so unbearable you may not even want to live, recovering from that doesn't make you a survivor it makes you a broken hearted human being. So please understand that. It also becomes very hard for you to love those closest to you because you're afraid that you will lose them too. I understand more than you know about what he must have been going through with his son as cancer is a very hard thing both to deal with and to lose someone you expect to see live a whole beautiful life with as you grow old you expect them to grow up Mary perhaps and have a life and then they're gone with all those expectations and all that love and everything and all you can think of is are the big hole they've left behind in your heart I'm using voice to text because I'm a handicapped person who has lost the ability to use their arms and because I'm severely handicapped it's the only tool I have to use. I hope what I've said here explains why calling him tragic and calling his life tragic is not insulting him at all it is not hurting his image at all but rather it is explaining that sometimes we laugh through our tears sometimes we put on a smiling face even though our heart is broken inside, some of the biggest and greatest comics have suffered nothing but tragedy in their lives and they still went on to give other people what they themselves could no longer have and that is joy laughter in the most innocent and free way you can imagine, at that moment they're giving a great gift to people but there isn't a day that doesn't go by where that pain isn't there but they try to throw themselves into their work in order to make other people's days brighter and also it helps them doing this much like for an alcoholic talking to somebody and helping somebody helps them with their road to recovery. One of my kids would probably tell you I am mansplaining this to you and maybe I am but you should not be taking insult because they're calling his life tragic or saying that his life was tragic in a way it was and I hope that my explaining to you explains why it was not an insult, merely a very accurate description of what a human being who gives so many people Joy, suffered, and that by its very definition is called tragic.

@@safiremorningstar well said. I lost my father at fifteen , he was sick with MS my whole life and that’s all I knew him as was being sick. My grandfather his father was in poor health when we lost my dad. I can remember the first time my grandfather went to my father’s grave and he literally laid down on it crying saying this isn’t supposed to be like this, you wasn’t supposed to die before me. It took its toll on my grandfather and he went down hill quicker than I feel it would have if my father hadn’t been bed fast and died so early. I also saw the toll and t took on my brother who lost his 7 week old son to Meningitis. My brother was healthy but the loss he felt left him heartbroken and he ended up having to have a triple heart bypass at 34. The doctor said the loss played a major part. So I understand how tragedy of loosing your child is with the person for life. I personally haven’t lost a child but have witnessed the devastating effects. God bless.

Mr. Berry’s wonderfully klutzy character, Captain Wilton Parmenter, takes its rightful place with such other legendary “klutzes” as Don Adam’s’ Maxwell Smart, Tim Conway’s Ensign Parker and Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau. @@FactsVerse For me it was when a Prussian Army officer was on a foreign exchange program with the War Department and was sent to F Troop to see if he could make it as efficient as any cavalry regiment in his country. Harvey Korman played the Prussian officer and Larry Storch later was wearing a Prussian Cavalry Corps spiked helmet. And became just like the Prussian officer. Prussia united the central German kingdoms and duchys into fighting Franc in the Franco Prussian War of 1869, 1870. My late father's grandfather was in the French Army at that time and I myself am part French in that respect. At least I know my ancestral history unlike many Americans nowadays.

I am very saddened to hear of Ken's death. I had no idea he had left us. It seems all the greats of TV's golden years are passing more and more sooner these days. My favorite character he played was "Vinton Harper" on "Mama's Family". That show was a hilarious riot. Great spin-off from Carol Burnett's show skit. Sorry he is gone. May he rest in peace.

I remember watching Herbie Rides Again. Movie starred Stefanie Powers as his girlfriend and a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle aka "the bug." He also made appearances on the Carol Burnett Show, Sonny & Cher, Dean Martin, ABC Movie Of The Week, Mama's Family and other shows. He has no final resting place being he was cremated and his ashes scattered in the Pacific Ocean.

My Mom grew up in Moline, IL, and talks about walking to school with his sister. She knew who Ken was but didn't really know him very well. Whenever he would come on the TV she would talk about her childhood.

My mother worked with a female cousin of Ken Barry. His wife, Jackie, never seemed to welcome his extended family and seemed distant and uncaring. Oddly my mom had known this when our family met Ken Barry and his wife in Hawaii. On a small tour bus, he was very amiable and my mom and he talked about his cousin. Jackie was not participating in any way and seemed disturbed at being recognized. Perhaps the loss of a child made her guarded, but whether it was on television or in person, Ken came off kinder and more agreeable than his wife. I also remember that Jackie appeared on one of those t.v. programs where the divorced wives of well known actors aired their grievances. I only caught one part of this show and when hearing her gripe, I felt sorry for Ken. His cousin believed him to be unhappily married and it sounds like he took the high road and never complained about her. No one knows what happens behind closed doors, but just seeing Jackie on that program validated some of what I had heard about her from my mom’s conversations with his cousin.

I remember seeing KB on Carol Burnett. I was just a kid, and he sang and danced to "Mr Bojangels" it completely touched my heart even tho I was so young. That has been etched in my memories to this day.

I just turned 74 and I remember watching him in all those shows when I was young. I agree with the commenter who said his life wasn't a tragedy and that he was a survivor. He always seemed like he was a very nice and good person. I really miss those days when our world wasnt upside down ❤🙏

Such a fun, talented performer. Berry had a guy next door charm that he brought to all of his roles. Mayberry RFD actually had good ratings, but was dumped in the rural purge of CBS. I keep hoping that one of the retro tv channels will bring back f-troop. It's too bad that he was not able to reprise his role in the Return to Mayberry movie.

I grew up in the seventies so I was always watching Ken Berry, whether it was on a variety show, re-runs of f-troop and Mayberry RFD, or movies like The Cat From Outer Space. He was a funny and charming performer. He became good friends with Andy Griffith and was part of the crew that Andy would hang out and party with. He was supposed to be in Return to Mayberry, but could not work it out with his shooting schedule for Mama's family.

I particularly liked this video because, although I was familiar with Berry's work, I was ignorant of his life story. I always figured that, because of his slight muscular build, that he had been an athlete at one time. I had no idea he had been a professional dancer.

I guess it was around 1975 or 1976 when he guest starred on The Carol Burnett Show. They did a takeoff of Airport 1975 and Ken Berry was a passenger who had just had a nose job. He said: "The first time they put it upside down... I nearly drown in the shower". I laughed my butt off and even now all these years later the comedic timing of that line still makes me belly laugh.!

I literally just watched him on the Brady Bunch this morning!! Now that's a coincidence!! I'm recovering from a botched ankle replacement surgery and sadly had to have my leg amputated below the knee in December. I've been on bedrest since May 26,2023. Always was a real character as Captain Wilton Parmenter on F Troop. Forrest Tuckers character as Sergeant O'Rourke was similar to Bob Cranes Col. Hogan pulling off capers under Col. klink. O'Rourke always knew which way to steer Parmenter so he can always keep making side money on his enterprise. I sure loved his wife Naomi on Mamas Family. A feisty super cutie.

@@FactsVerse you know I was a little kid, now 62! I don’t remember any specific episodes, too many years gone by! Of course, my hubby tells me I’ve seen movies that I have zero recollection of! Nice thing is the movies are new all over again! Anyhoo, what I remember is the character he played being a kind and gentle man. I guess I’ve always thought he was probably that way in real life. Sad to hear about his kids dying before him. Poor man!

I always thought he was a nice man. It’s so sad that his life was filled with many tragedies and especially losing his children and then marriage. The death of a child is tragic for any marriage and lose more than one…😢. I liked him in F troup and also as the bumbling Vin Harper in Mama’s family. He was too cute and funny as Vin. Except for the pilot episode. 🙏🏻

Not only that his daughter Jennifer did not die in a car accident in the late 70s. She actually outlived her father and died Sep. 21, 2020 and died of natural causes.

I remember f Troop for one important reason, my father had gotten a job overseas specifically and I didn't speak the language f Troop was dubbed in the local language and it wasn't dubbed completely over so that I could hear the English just faintly I became really good at lip reading because of that and I also picked up the language soon after to such a degree was I good at the lip reading and picking up the language that I soon spoke the language fluently and when my kindergarten teacher was it first grade I think it was first grade teacher said anybody who could read her lips could leave early naturally I left early.

@@FactsVerse it's such a small town that any little situation became a bid deal, I remember the episode when Ken Berry got ticketed for not using his turn signal and it because a huge court case, he fought it and won 👍😂
