Francis Lee, the Manchester City legend, fought more than just defenders on the pitch. His greatest battle was a hidden struggle against an ugly disease that buried him 6 feet under the ground. This is the story of one of the saddest cancer battles in football history.
Francis Lee, born on April 29, 1944, in Westhoughton, Lancashire, England, had a childhood filled with passion for football. Growing up in a working-class family, he kicked his first ball around the streets of his hometown. Football was more than just a game for young Francis; it was his dream. In his early years, Lee showed exceptional talent and dedication on the pitch. He played for local youth teams, polishing his skills and catching the eye of scouts. Despite facing challenges, such as limited resources and tough competition, Francis remained determined to pursue his passion for football.

I'm 65, francis lee was my hero when I was a wee boy. I remember my mum taking me into Roberts store and getting me the home strip also the England strip think it was in an admiral box?. Well back in the day you couldn't get man.city stuff the only time I got it was when we went to Morecambe every Glasgow fair fortnight that I bought a miniature statue of mr.lee also a skip hat think I was the only one in Glasgow with ir. I remember going to airdrie Broomfield stadium to watch them play think it was the texeco cup or the anglo scottish cup? Great memories as a child growing up in Castlemilk Glasgow. Rip Francis 🙏

That City team with Lee, Bell, Summerbee, Young, Doyle, Oakes, Book etc were a fantastic attacking team to watch due to the brilliant management and coaching of Mercer and Allison. Lee was brilliant every game, always gave everything. He had the lot for a relatively short player, and was one of my fave players of that era. He would walk into today's Citeh team

Wonderful Player for CITY and ENGLAND! Played in one of the greatest CITY and ENGLAND teams! He did come back to save our great club as chairman, and he he did manage to oust Peter Swales (RIP) but some of his decisions, in particular to sack Brian Horton who was a great manager with a very exciting team and footballing philosophy was a huge mistake! I have nothing personal against Alan Ball, he had been a wonderful; footballer for both clubs and country, and indeed winning the 'World Cup' as an ENGLAND player, but he was already a 'failed' manager before he even came to CITY. Franny should have stuck with Brian Horton and gave him the funds to build a team to consolidate and climb the table! The sad thing is that his wonderful legacy as a former player was tarnished because of this and although there are rumours that he sowed the earliest seeds of a possible future takeover by the 'Abu Dabi' group, his tenure as chairman will always be remembered as the time that this great club dropped into the third tier of English football! The wonderful fans ( of which I am one) stuck by the club and the team and 'roared' them back to the next division up! So sad that a working class man who served our great club and deep down really loved us as a fan as well as a former great player, should end his days fighting a terrible illness! Rest In Peace Francis, God Bless you ! CTID! dx

I'm in my late 50s so I never saw Lee as a player for City, so my memories will always be tied to him as chairman of the club. You know when you are taking over a job from someone who have been successful and the phrase "having big shoes to fill" replacing Swales was the opposite of that and there are many people that would suggest he failed at that. For me though, the two things that really troubled me about his time at the club was firing Tony Book on his return, my understanding is this was down to animosity caused by Lee's departure from the club and.... appointing Alan Ball as manager. I guess the moral is as a football legend when your a player be very careful what you do with it after you retire, indeed ironically the same thing could be said for Ball as well
