Billie Holiday’s story is not one for the faint of heart. From the very beginning, turmoil, racism, and a deep inner sadness plagued her life-and haunted her until the very end. But at the same time, she had a fighting spirit and a voice like no other. From adversity to scandal to the bitter and heartbreaking end-there’s little doubt that Billie deserved a lot better than what the world gave her.

The drugs took over and destroyed her But not her legacy, which remains untouchable

Billie Holiday has never ever been tainted by her drug use, for example, as Elvis has been. No. She is remembered for her incredible talent. And, that’s what she deserves.

What a sad life. Abusive men, substance abuse, racism, persecution by the law. That's too heavy a burden for anyone to carry, no matter how resilient you are, no matter how talented. RIP, Billie, in the arms of the angels.

I was introduced to Billies music as a little girl. Her voice is amazing! My all-time favorite song is "Good Morning Heartache."

She was blues. Way ahead of her time, a couple decades later she’d have been a superstar.

I can only imagine how many hits "Strange Fruit" will get out of this video. May The Good Lord bless you for sharing Billie Holiday with us. I'm so sorry that she had such a hard life.

I did not know this story, although of course I had heard of Ms. Holiday. Very sad. She had very little happiness and peace in her life. I hope that she has found it now.

Unfortunate that Louis McKay not only cheated her in life, but in death too! After Billie died, McKay was her sole beneficiary - she died intestate. He went on to marry a couple of times and had a son Louis III He was married but living apart from his estranged wife Bernice when he died on March 10, 1981. In his will he left 20% of his assets to his wife Bernice, and 80% to his son Louis III. He had also been collecting Billie's royalties for 21½ years. When Louis died, Billie's royalties went to 2 unknown people, his son Louis III and Bernice his 3rd wife. When Bernice died in 2021, she had collected a full 40 years of Billie's royalties! 😡

The movie most definitely “white washed” her story. Mostly, Louis was portrayed as being a wonderful husband and didn’t convey the deep depth of the tragedy of her life.😂

She was treated so horribly by so many people. Hopefully, the majority of those have found themselves down below, in the special hell reserved just for them. Especially the racists. I have been a fan of Billie Holiday since I was a teenager, and that was a very long time ago. The haunting melody and lyrics to Strange Fruit will continue to raise the goose- bumps on my arms as it has always done. What bothers me most however, is that the US seems hell-bent on returning to those times, when racism and hate was out of control. We have Trump to thank for all of that in the USA. Ms. Holiday saw the worst of humanity in so many varied ways. Lucky for us, she used those experiences to write many of the lyrics in her songs. It is not hard at all to understand why she turned to 'substances' to get her through. I don't blame her one bit, nor will I look down on her for it. She did what she had to to survive. Life was never easy for Billie. I can only hope that her story resonates with the younger crowd and especially with younger Americans. Do we really want to go back to the days that Billie had to endure through? WWII days, full of hate for your neighbour and hate for everyone else? Let's not do that again.

I don't believe the OP meant this to be funny and disrespectful about the subject, Billie Holiday, but laughable about the narrator's delivery of the story as it was like one long, 20 minute sentence without coming up for a breath of air.
