The "Trifecta" - Amtrak Southwest Chief, Coast Starlight & Sunset Limited

On certain nights of the week in Los Angeles you can snag 3 of Amtrak's long hauls within about 3-4 hours. Starting off with the outbound Southwest Chief #4 to Chicago, then the inbound Coast Starlight #11 from Seattle, ending with the outbound Sunset Limited #2 to New Orleans (SUN, WED, FRI)... I was in the LA area and caught the "trifecta" on May 26th 2024.
Train #1... Amtrak 4 heads East with a wheezy narrow font K5LA on AMTK 171.
Train #2... Amtrak 11 arriving 30 minutes early with a unique sounding K5LA on AMTK 190. Not the best but certainly not the worst.
Train #3... Amtrak 2 passing thru El Monte with a decent 2000's "2nd Gen" K5LA on AMTK 5 with the Operation Lifesaver 203 trailing.
All good ol' P42DC power on point surprisingly with no awful raised letter K5LA's either. Hard to grab three consecutive P42s these days without one having the standard raised letter horn.

All P42s except for 314 trailing on 11! That's going to get increasingly difficult to see. Rather surprised that all the leading units had decent older horns too. Great video!

Nice video man! Glad to see you’re getting more P42’s leading, I can’t believe I’m saying this but I kinda like #190 lol, it’s very uniquely tuned and pretty aggressive sounding! I hope they send it this way once or twice, and man 171 has such potential I don’t think it sounds bad but if they clean it out a little that thing would be golden! Of course it won’t sound like it used to but it would be better if they touched it up! #5 still going at it! Its sister #4 is a dangerous one!

Thanks man... ya the 190 is interesting, used to be much better earlier this year, it's good overall but somethings a bit "off" with it. 171 sounds tired, the 1 bell is weak sounding to me. And ya 5 is above average. I just can't believe there was no raised letter in the lineup this night... I was happily surprised! Hate those things

@@AmtrakCal462 I agree 110% on the raised letter thing I’m honestly shocked too after now hearing all of these were in 1 night. 171 has potential if they would fix it up, but yeah the 190 is neat to me I can’t put a finger on what it is that makes it sound like that.
