The Troubles consisted of about 30 years of repeated acts of intense violence between elements of Northern Ireland's Nationalist community (principally Roman Catholic) and Unionist community (principally Protestant). The conflict was caused by the disputed status of Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom, and the alleged domination of the minority nationalist community, and discrimination against, by the unionist majority. The violence was characterised by the armed campaigns of paramilitary groups. Most notable of these was the Provisional IRA campaign 1969--1997 which was aimed at the end of British rule in Northern Ireland and the creation of a new all-Ireland Irish Republic. In response to this campaign and the perceived erosion of the British character and unionist domination of Northern Ireland, loyalist paramilitaries such as the UVF and UDA launched their own campaigns against the nationalist population. The state security forces - the British Army and the police (the Royal Ulster Constabulary) - were also involved in the violence. The British government point of view is that its forces were neutral in the conflict and trying to uphold law and order in the North. Irish republicans, however, regarded the state forces as "combatants" in the conflict and point to evidence of repeated collusion between the state forces and the loyalists as proof of this.

This was broudcast in England in January 1981 (you can see that this has een edited) I remember watching it as a 16 year old as (I think it was on I.T.V.) I was trying to find out about what was happening/had happened in Ireland ... It gave me a brillient overview of the past and where we were then. Evan as a small child from 69/70 onwards, I remembered the news images on the t.v. coming from/living in Liverpool we had a Nationalist outlook on Ireland but this three part documentry gave me The Knowlage!.

So the Catholics were originally outnumbered by Protestants in Northern Ireland, by 2 to 1. But I think the proportion of Northern Irishmen who are Catholic has increased to about 45% (correct me if I'm wrong), as of recent years.

Jordan Yang Ireland will soon be plunged back into conflict again, if not after Brexit, then some time in the near future.

I've heard that during certain times that Catholics avoided or lied to the census for political reasons, so the numbers may not be reliable. The numbers likely fluctuated too since many Catholics fled to Ireland during the early days of an independent Ireland and many protestants fled during the Troubles.

I'm an American that watches a ton of British documentaries, BBC news, and various British TV shows (English, Scottish, and Irish) so I'm fairly good at understanding most accents but sometimes even I'll hear some Irish or Scottish accents and ask myself "are they even speaking English?, so i can hardly blame the closed caption robot. Poor little robot is probably confused as hell.

It pains me to say this but even as a staunch Republican supporter I just don't see a united Ireland happening EVER.... I'm looking at it as realistically as I can without attempting to dilute myself.... maybe someone here can prove me wrong...

There's a reason the UK kept Ulster, it's been stuffed with Scots and English since the 16th/17th century. Both the Scots and the Irish have a long history of digging in their heels against foreign pressure, so i doubt the Scots would want to join. The only way Ulster would join Ireland is if the Scots and English left or were forced out, and I dont see that happening any time soon.
