Tricky Truckies knots will get you out of lots of problems . In days past I`ve used them in multiples to winch my 4WD Patrol up a slope enough to give it a rolling clutch start after I killed the battery . Also if you examine your basic sheep shank you`ll see a clove hitch . Turn it on its side and view the double lines as though they are your combing rail , and you`ll see a clove hitch in your hands . Great subject you picked for the video , thanks for sharing it .

Husband was a "truckie" and albeit showed me how to do it, never felt the use for it because I had him. All of a sudden I need to move a large article and now he has passed away, of course that is when I need the knowledge. Thank you Tim, tried several times around the footstool, ultimately the "ute" and I have mastered it. Great video, easy to understand.

Good demo. My dad taught me this one, and I have used it hundreds of times for loads, creating taut lines during camping trips, etc. It's reliable, easy to tie, with a little practice, easy to tighten and easy to untie. It's a real workhorse knot.

To me this is the true trucker's hitch fast and easy to put on and take off without messing with any knots like in other versions. As a kid I remember seeing my dad use this version of the hitch all the time and was always amazed how quick he would set it, it was almost like a slight of hand magic trick. But it stuck with me because years later when I needed it I was able to recall how to make it, thanks dad!

AKA Nathan in uk, we have very thick screwDRIVERS who lob straps over the load with the hook on passenger side and ratchets on the the offside. Meaning same as you down under, if you needed to tighten up the ratchets on the inside lane of the M6 motorway you’d get flattened by another screwdriver with an HGV class one licence.

@asafpeled6994 жыл бұрын
It's actually not a "trucker's hitch" . They are two different knots. The "truckie" uses a variation of the Sheepshank to get mechanical advantage. A regular truckers hitch uses either a normal slipknot or an alpine butterfly knot to make the loop that is used for the pulley action.

Thanks Tim, there is a variation to this which avoids the need to pull all the rope around the rail. If your rope is particularly long & you want to keep it that way, you can just pull a loop under the rail to pick up using the hitch. Then you can pull your load down & tie it off much quicker, see how you go tieing it off in a similar manner. The remaining rope can then be hitched to another part of the rail to pull down another part of your load.

ropes made of cotton/not nylon won't melt.
@russlehman2070 Жыл бұрын
@@justsomedude77 True. Natural fiber ropes -- cotton, hemp, sisal can be whipped (wrapped and tied with fine twine) or taped. For synthetic rope -- nylon polypropylene, polyester, etc.-- heating the ends with a lighter, candle, gas stove burner or whatever to melt the fibers together is the easiest way to keep the ends from unraveling.

I'm a truckie & that looks like the hardest way to tie a truckers hitch. Try melting the ends of your rope, it will stop them from fraying.
@thegamsafoot4 жыл бұрын
It will only melt if you have synthetic material in your rope. If its 100% hemp, it will only burn up. Try this: take a match to a fiber of your rope, if it curls up and melts, it's synthetic (plastic), your rope will stretch; if it burns, your rope is hemp, all fiber, no stretch (strength).

i got shown a complicated way to do this 30 years ago and i always needed to examine the sample he put between 2 steel bars in my backyard. i'm sorry to say it but yours is even more complicated. the way i devised that made it easy to remember is as follows. make a loop in the rope over the load. push a loop made of the rope dangling down from below it, through it - pull a big loop through it. then make another loop in the rope above the first loop over the load and pull the big loop you made through that one too. this is your knot done in the way that made it easy for me to remember. a shipwright showed me a more secure variation. you only need to do one loop through one loop for this. after pulling the big loop through the first loop over the load, go around it on the high side half a turn and poke back downwards through that first loop. pull it through a good amount. now put the loose end around the rail and bring it up and tie it through the loop that was first made and on the side where the second loop was pushed through from. then return this end back down to tension and hitch it up. this knot will not undo even if the tension on the rope slackens where a truckies knot may undo. he also showed me to do a little loop after making the drivers side hitch then pass the short tail through it. this lessons tension on the hitch making it able to tolerate greater stresses. i rewrote this many times trying to make it better understood.
@roseymalino9855 Жыл бұрын
Other than when the load somehow compresses or shrinks or if the rope stretches, how might a trucker's hitch lose tension?
@vsvnrg3263 Жыл бұрын
@@roseymalino9855 , aha! good question! if the load shifts. or if it wasnt tight enough in the first place. on long trips i use the method suggested to me by the shipwright. it is more failsafe. all sorts of amazing things can happen on long trips. for example, trailer tailgates can vibrate open and fall off, waiting for me to discover it is missing causing me to return back across the nullabor (only 50 kms, thank goodness) to find it patiently waiting for me in the middle of the road. remember, absailers and mountain climbers never use these truckies hitches. they can be made more reliable by making sure there is a lot of excess pulled through. personal experience has taught me that lesson.

@therealchickentender6 жыл бұрын
Good stuff. This version is heaps easier to untie after load and if wet, but I've found that it just doesn't hold up with paracord and smaller diameter ropes and will collapse under heavy load. A lot of people bitch about the slipknot version, but for paracord it'll take quite a bit more force... and paracord is cheap if you have to cut (though honestly I never have had to cut it).
@therealchickentender6 жыл бұрын
Hahah - yeah yeah - no I didn't mean to suggest anybody should tie a load with it (unless you've no other choice). I did recently start tying a midline figure-8 for the loop in place of a slipknot and seems good for either application. Not as quick but there's no way it'll collapse though. Cheers - thank you for the vid. :)

Interestingly, the mechanical advantage of this system is actually 3:1 - theoretically. So if using pulleys it would be. Using a rail and loop of rope instead of pulleys there is obviously a significant loss due to friction. Still, the power of a truckies hitch is apparent to anyone who has used one.
@jackccharity5 жыл бұрын
Incorrect - the mechanical advantage is as he stated 2:1, minus (as you correctly stated) frictional loss. The hitch in essence is one movable pulley - therefore if he pulls through 20 cm of rope, the pulley (hitch) moves 10 cm, therefore ratio is 2:1.
@hollosaroka5 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Ian Brown got it right. We are calculating the tensioning force we need to apply on the rope we hold in our hands to generate a given tension in the rope that ties down the load. We have 3 parallel strings on the hitch side while only one on the other side hence the 3:1 theoretical ratio if we ignore the friction. You would get 2:1 ratio if you would tie the rope to the bar and then pull it through the hitch. That would give a slack to one of the strings out of tree so the tension would be divided in only 2. A drawing could help.
@rodmills40715 жыл бұрын
Are you people for real....who give a rats the f..ing thing works.🤣😂😁😀😎
@rockstylex335 жыл бұрын
A truckers hitch is a simulated block and tackle, a block and tackle will always have a mechanical advantage that doubles with each simulated pulley that would increase the mechanical advantage. 2:1 then 4:1 then 8:1 then 16:1 and so on. 3:1 is not even a possible mechanical advantage.
