The true origins of the "Peter Piper" routine

I'm stoked my initial Roc Raida post of the first 17 days in May resonated with so many of you. Raida, although deceased, remains one of the most influential Djs in our genre. However, there seems to be some confusion regarding the origin's of Raida's ‪#‎PeterPiper‬ routine...
IG: "@brolicarm did @djjazzyjeff get that routine from Roc Raida? I always wondered who did this first with the Peter Piper routine..." ~ @reminiss
FB: "yoooo haveent seen that version of peter piper from Roc..." ~ @Jonathan DeVone Davis
But it wasn't until one of my Hip Hop heroes, Breakbeat Lou, called me earlier today and flat out asked "...so WHO WAS IT that did the #PeterPiper routine first Rob?", that I felt compelled to set the record straight for everyone and put together this post. Respectfully, the origins of Jazzy Jeff's #PeterPiper routine, specifically the "There it is" forward spin can be traced back to Jay T. Diamond (X-Men).
Yes, Jay was the first to purposely spin a record forward as a part of a battle routine, NOT Roc Raida or Jazzy Jeff. Jay premiered the technique in front of the world at the 1990 USA DMC finals.
I know this may come as a shock to many of the millennial "Turntablists" out there who think the techniques they employ were birthed post the year 2000, but as the wise Napoleon Hill once said, "Very seldom does anyone create an idea or anything absolutely new."
And so there it is, the truth, clear as a crystal.

Nothing about Hip-Hop is about doing it first. Everything about Hip-Hop is taking what's been done and making it loved/respected again and again.

Something I think is important to add-- Raida was totally open about the influence. I interviewed him in the early '90s for a piece in 4080 Magazine, and during our conversation I asked him if his famous Peter Piper routine was at all derived from something I'd seen Diamond J do in the 1990 battle, and (after expressing surprise that a California journalist had seen the '90 clip and made the association) said that yes, he'd been messing around with Diamond J, jokingly imitating him, when he came up with it, and fine-tuned it from there.

You put Jeffs clip on first and it's dated 2015...Jeff was doing this peter piper routine back in the 80's on philly radio station power 99fm

@@turn1210 I interviewed Roc Raida years ago, and I asked him if his Peter Piper routine was inspired by Diamond J's 1990 routine with Sugarhill Gang, which is what that last clip is. He said he was messing around with Diamond J (they were friends) and mimicking the routine as a sort of joke, but then realized how dope what he was doing sounded, and he evolved it into the Peter Piper routine he used in the battle.

Yes sir and if you remember that's when technique got with them and made the 1200 and stop making the other turntables. And that became the standard. I wish I still had the VHS tapes of Jeff and cash money live in handcuffs doing it's time Jeff has become more uniformed in his mixing that's y he is still going

aladdin also one of the illest to juggle peter piper. his pause routine was infamous (doing behind the back etc). the way the bells in the song sounded when he put his finger on the record to pause it was next level

It doesn't matter to me as long as the art form stays alive! I can't stand DJ's now, it's just boring. They just throw a song on every 10 seconds, no blends, scratches or anything. I hate it

Yeah because industry took away real sampling and breaks in the song so the (dj) was coming to an end if you look at it .... It's gone back to the grand master flash days with just blending songs they tryed to blame wax was to much to keep making so they went to cd now cd's r long gone ! Now what's really left nothing but Bs all the way around!!!!!

With all the years I’ve studied hip hop, I crazy respect for you & all the X-men, BUTTTTT Jeff’s been around just as long as you. With that being said, Jeff has elevated that routine that more than 1000’s of DJ’s used in DMC / ITF battles and weren’t successful. Again, has perfected and elevated that routine to a much higher level. Good luck to the DJ that can do it better.

All djs cut up the same songs, the point is they all got they own style... it’s about timing, style, tone, and all that.. you really tryna say jazzy is biting?

I understand we have people that pioneered dj’in but please stop trying to make Jazzy Jeff into less of a person he had a routine and presented it to the public enough said Same when Michael Jackson came out with the moonwalk everyone was quick to quip someone else been doing that

Stop. It's Peter Piper. Released in 85-86. Just because youre seeing a routine perform in 2015 doesn't mean it was created then. Jeff is one of them ones if not THE ONE. Stop in the name of George Washington for every president that followed. Ugh.
