The true pocket size 'Nontaus' World-Band (SW-FM-AM) Radio Receiver & Media Player

This is a review of the remarkably compact and low-cost 'Nontaus' multi-band radio and media player. It employs just a 160mm aerial and a 30mm speaker so I was not expecting much in the way of performance or sound, but it actually performed a lot better than expected.
An intriguing little set indeed!

Ha ha, I know what you mean. TBH it's a real fun set to use and if you employ KZfaqrs Radio Weeb DX's suggestion of connecting a small (less than 1M) length of wire to a retracted aerial, it's sensitivity on shortwave is improved by some measure without incurring overloading - great stuff!

The removable battery is a great feature. I don't need to crack the case open and do surgery when it can't hold a charge anymore.

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. they managed somehow to squeeze in that big 18650 battery and it is included with the set, so I think overall it's good value for the money. I agree with your thoughts on sealed in batteries - you end up binning a perfectly useable item for the sake of an exhausted battery!

The radio appears quite sensitive for what it is worth. You know sometimes when clipping on a random wire often overloads these type of DSP radios, it maybe better to just wrap the wire around a few turns without actually clipping it directly on to the antenna and then close it back down. It still boosts the reception of the radio without overloading.

Hi, many thanks for your feedback. As you advise I have tried approx. 1M of wire wrapped around the retracted aerial and can confirm a definite improvement on shortwaves even during the daytime! Excellent.

@@TheWobblyCameraGuy Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, depending on the radio I suppose. I was discussing the same thing to another KZfaq SWL channel the other day, he said when attaching a random wire of certain length to a cheap Chinese radio just increased the noise, so I advised him to do the same. You can also wrap the wire around the radio it helps with SW and MW reception as well.

Thanks, and a quick tip (if you really need another radio ;-)....i have the addiction too) get yourself an XHDATA D219 for very cheap. It's a fantastic performer on all bands. Best wishes.

I have lots of radios! 😂 but I have seen several reviews of the XHDATA D219 you recommend all of which say that its a good performer so I might have to purchase one and see. Thanks for the tip!

I have one too. My experience is FM to be fair, SW ok. A peace of wire attached to the tiny aerial certainly helps to make a decent receiver. MW though is very very weak. It is still a nice radio with decent sound performance.

When you add wire to the antenna, are you wrapping it around the full lengt? Im confused 🤔

Hi, that's a good question and all you really need to do is simply make a good connection with the bare end of the wire to the aerial. I soldered a wire to an alligator clip and clipped it to the aerial that works just fine and I have made a 60 sec shorts video on this very thing if you want to pop across to my channel and take a look. What I would suggest is that you play around with the length of the wire to obtain the optimum results for your particular receiver and the frequency range that you are tuning into, (it doesn't need to be that long). What is the brand and reference of this little radio ? please I enjoyed it very much

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. The only reference to a brand that I can see on the receiver is ‘Nontaus’. Looking on AliExpress there are identical ones with a product code of T-6623 and translating the Chinese writing on sticker in the photo that they show on their site it says ‘Card Radio King’. It may be generic set made by one manufacturer that is then sold to distributors who then add their own branding?

Thank you. The chinese are slowly learning. Monster sound from a tiny speaker, not bad at all. 18650 yay, should be able to run for days with a new battery....not the one supplied wich is labeled 4800, it probably only is somewhere from 800 to 1200 mAh.

Hi, many thanks for your feedback. The sound quality was unexpected and nice surprise. Yep, always take those stated battery capacities with a large pinch (bucket?) of salt !
