Dave and Barbara, the best team in comedy. Poking his finger through is glasses and saying he didn't have time to wait at Lens Crafters.....It's the unexpected little things that make Dave's rambling stories more enjoyable and funny. Laugh out loud funny. Barbara is a true Saint for working with Dave, continuously?, for such a long long time. Their chemistry has always been fantastic to watch.

His zingers on the show were unequaled to any other host. Paris Hilton was touting her "invention" champagne in a can . He let her do her spiel and then looked directly at the camera and said, "See America ? This is why everybody hates us!" Absolute genius.

I was a religious viewer for 28 years. 1987 to 2015. I was 8 when I first came across Dave on Late Night. After he retired and closed shop on Late Show, I have yet to see anything on TV at 11:30. Not a single episode of anyone’s show. Sure, I see clips and stuff on KZfaq, but none have propelled me to go and tune in as it broadcasts over the air. When Dave left, late night television left with him. He is the king of the medium forever and ever.

@@keefriff99 It’s curious because I have seen a few episodes, less than a handful really, of Leno’s car show but never could stand The Tonight Show. While I found Leno and his comedy annoying, nothing like Fallon. That guy is beyond soporifically annoying.

@@cactaceous I know most people were either virulently Team Letterman or Team Leno, but I never hated Leno. He was fine...too corporate and vanilla for my tastes, but watchable at least. Fallon, on the other hand, is nearly unwatchable to me. The whole show is so fake and overly cutesy...it's a damn shame that the supremely talented Questlove and the Roots are stuck being his sidekicks.

I did a face plant 16 years ago, and 6 mos ago I was surprised to have two lower teeth pulled due to my injuries from that experience. When my face plant occurred, I feared I had knocked out teeth and was pleased to find they were all still intact. But the process of resorption began from that trauma and slowly destroyed the roots of those two teeth. Weird but true. I’m grateful that modern dentistry could detect and fix this issue to prevent deterioration of my jawbone from occurring as well, plus replace the pulled teeth with implants and crowns.

@newyorklad3994
@newyorklad3994 2 жыл бұрын
Dave and Jean Shepherd are both cut from that mold of Midwestern storytellers. Few and far between, folks who listened to Jean Shepherd on WOR radio in New York, with his crazy kazoo introduction playing along with that recorded marching band song, him saying "Mankind keeps marching forward...In hock agrikcuelah konk, in es spittle lock," and then his wonderful stories, about the triangular donut machine, the one about Leopold Dopler and the great gravy boat giveaway, the story about him sitting in the hot sun in a little boat on a lake fishing for crappies with his old man and then Hairy Gertz tells a dirty joke and young Shep thinks it's about hockey, and the story about him being a mail boy running along a slag heap in midwestern winter and getting frostbitten lungs at a steel mill in the made-up town of Homan, Indiana, and his many stories mentioning his friend Flick. On Saturdays Shep did a live radio broadcast from The Limelight In New York City. In my own boyhood, too many nights I fell asleep with that white, hard plastic earbud stuck in my ear, wired to a small transistor radio, listening to Jean Shepherd's magic. Then later, catching his TV show, Jean Shepherd's America, him interviewing Albro B. Gregory of the Nome Nugget newspaper, and seeing Shep climb in and pilot a small Cessna as he taxied and took off. He was a close spiritual brother to guys like Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, J.J. Audubon, Tom Wolfe, and others, who all paid homage to, and evoked a warmth in our common American experience and our common American Brotherhood and Sisterhood, and if Shep were alive today I am sure he'd have a powerful insight into our present situation.

I've also had a sudden unexpected confrontation between my face and the cement, though not as dramatic and evocative as Dave's. Only been knocked out once, many years earlier. On my first and only hockey breakaway, I stickhandled and skated as fast as I could, narrating the play-by-play of the 1963 Toronto Maple Leafs version to myself, and keeping my eye on the puck. Skated right past the net and head first into the boards. Of course, none of us wore helmets in those days. Next thing I remember, on coming to, was looking up at a circle of people standing around me, looking down at me and asking if I was okay. I unfortunately also told my mother. That was the last pair of skates they ever bought me.

Wait a minute, Dave, was it just a trip that was that bad? I kept waiting for you to say a guy rode into you with one of those electric scooters.

Glad you're doing alright. I was attacked once and hit my head on the sidewalk. I had some Brain Hemoraging so I had to spend the night in ICU with a Vicodin Drip. They kept a Nurse with me all night and would not let me fall asleep because I might not wake up. So I'm glad you didn't have to go through that. Bless You and I loved your show. Oh! Happy Birthday Dave!
