You may have heard of Aethelwold from the Last Kingdom. Today I will tell you the true story behind the life of Aethelwold or as I would like to call him the Aetheling that never became King. Aethelwold was born in the 9th century at the height of the Viking age. During this time the Viking raiders who had descended from the sea had invaded half of England, and only parts of Mercia and Wessex remained independent. Aethelwold’s father was the King of Wessex during this turbulent time, but when he fell in battle Aethelwold’s fate would become uncertain. This is his story.

I have to admit that I saw him as a worm, because of the way he was shown in the series. But now I see him as cunning and having a huge place in history. Great video.

To further the ease of Edward’s succession Alfred also named Edward as King during his own lifetime. We don’t know if Edward was named as Co-King of Wessex (Similar to what King Offa of Mercia did with his son). Or if he was King of Kent (as had previously been the West Saxon tradition, for the heir to the throne). Regarding Æthelwold, it’s important to remember that while he would have held the title of King, he was a puppet King of the Danes, with very little of his own power.

Yeah I did see him badly also... this though shows him as like a son cheated out of his right to be king & wanting what was owed to him. His desire though got him killed it seems. Which holds true either way you see him. These history vids are cool...

If Anything, Edward WAS The True Villain. Losers In Wars Always Come Across Less Flattering (Historically). But, Ethelwold Knew The Risks, Regardless Of The Outcome. Mad Or Brave...? One Probably Had To Be A Combination Of Both To Fight, And Die, For A Title They Never Lived Long Enough To Maintain.

I always loved his character in the show and felt like even though he was a worm he was a person who could've been a good person. Now the real person I don't have much of an opinion of him but I do think he was a cunning person.

A less centralized, almost federal English kingdom with a Viking-Saxon creole culture, which is how I picture Aethelwold’s England, sounds like an interesting point of focus for an alternate history scenario

I love hearing about the real lives of those from the tv series, even though some of the people are moved around a bit in time for dramatic purposes. Uhtred is my husband's 32nd great grandfather and I believe Aethwold may be my 33rd great grandfather, lol. Probably a lot of people are descended from these individuals and its interesting to hear how they actually were and lived. Thanks for the hard work to put these videos together!

Very good... non fiction influences us all... researched history is essential to maintain a grasp on reality. ( I never liked the portrayal of Ethel wold in “the last kingdom”).... so thanks 👍

Ragnar Ragnarsson is a fictional character. Most of the Danes in TLK are very very loosely based on historical figures, but I don’t think Ragnar is based on anyone
