The truth about 20,000 mile oil change, myth busted with Scotty Kilmer. One year synthetic oil changes in your car. The real mileage you should change your engine oil. Mobil 1 claims that their engine oil can last up to 20,000 miles of driving in your car, but this isn't true for the average person. DIY car repair with Scotty Kilmer, an auto mechanic for the last 50 years.

It's not too big of an issue, I simply run some PVC from the exhaust back to the intake. This setup allows for more dense air charged with hydrocarbons. I find that I can barely maintain traction in all 6 gears in my 97 Civic. Make sure to get rid of the platinum, pallidium, and rhodium in your cat. Those hydrocarbons make all the difference.

I just don't get why people find it such a hassle to check and/or change their oil. I get sometimes it sneaks up on you, and you feel like you just did it. But people that say oil is to expensive or that just take it to a shop and say its to expensive, make no sense. Because with 100% certainty, your engine will wear out faster the more times you do overextended oil changes. Then people often complain that their car is costing them to much money, or that they always end up with crap cars that always give them problems when changing your oil on time may have prevented most of those problems. I keep up on all my fluids and my 2.4L Tacoma has over 200K runs grate, it has zero leaks and does not consume a drop of oil.

Heinzkitz Velvet Feel free to not change your oil according to manufacturers specifications (make sure you use that 20,000 mile oil too). When your car blows up, make sure to put a video on you tube so we can all laugh at you. Here's the truth: more than likely, the driving of the vast majority of you (like myself) falls under the 'severe usage' category, and you need to read your owners manual, and follow that category of maintenance!

@@robertt9342 May work, but if you are not going to utilize those properties, don't pay for them. Your experience in fact argues in favor of what Scotty Kilmer says. 7500 miles is a prudent interval with mixed driving, 10,000 miles with mostly highway. With severe duty, 4000 miles might be it even with synthetic. With shorter oil change intervals, you can use down-market products as long as they meet the manufacturer's specifications.

so, you drain the: steering: 3,000 m engine: 1,220 m Trans: 15,000 m rad: 15,000 m (should be done annually anyhow with new anti freeze) 1,220 m for the engine is ridiculous. Using something like Shell Helix Ultra or Mobil 1 fully synthetics, 7.500 is fine, using a _high quality_ oil filter. I know a guy who bought a new Ferrari and after running-in changed the engine and transmission oil every 1,000 m. The oil was just discolouring when he changed it. If it went wrong the repair bill would have killed him. The car is now 20 odd years old and still runs like new. The oil changes were insurance.

jets, take synthetic oils. we don't change the oil, we Replace the filter or on some pratt and witneys, you clean the filter every 100 hours of flight. you can do the same on your car, if it does not burn oi. change your filter every 3,000 miles and then after about 18,000, change the Oil. in jet engines, you normally add oil when its low. Mobil One oil for your car at 18,000, change it. juts replace your filter.

Great video. Really honest. I personally still prefer full synthetic oil however I never trusted those ads about how the high mileage it can last. I still would change the oil at least once per year when I basically just have driven 8k miles. People can drive much more, however that's not necessarily good for the car. Too many people trying to save some pennies while eventually spending thousands.

Ive used amsoil since 2001which claims 25k or 1 year. Ive never gotten that high but have gotten to 17k. I send a small sample oil out to an independent company (oil analyzers inc) to test where they measure metals, contamination, etc to determine breakdown. Its always come back with a very detailed report and chart on what’s was found, most importantly noting “good for continued use” and ive never had issues

What happens to the color of the oil? If it gets darker, that suggests contamination or chemical changes.
@fishman80
@fishman80 6 жыл бұрын
Ninja Rider the opposite is true. If you're using a detergent engine oil (and most modern engine oils have detergent additives), the oil is working just the way it's supposed to, dispersing the tiny particles that can result in engine sludge and holding them in the oil itself so that they can't build up. That's why the oil appears darker, but this in no way impedes the oil from performing its normal functions of lubricating and protecting surfaces inside the engine. after a couple thousand miles with any oils like this it darkens up. All i can say is i send it out after every oil change and have it tested. Results dont lie. Research the company they are independent so no bias

Why change the oil if you don’t need to, yes you have to change it sooner if do track racing or frequent stop and go and extreme weather and if the car is not driven regularly. If you have a direct injection it will make the engine oil dark quicker but oil is still good, if you use a good synthetic oil you want to change something then change the filter at 10000 miles

A Chevron oil engineer told me that although synthetic oil has a few advantages (mostly heat tolerance) extended change intervals is not one of them. This is because the primary reason for changing the oil is to dump the contaminants that are in it. Carbonic acid, metals, oxidation and more things get in the oil that are not removed by the filter. This is even if the oil itself doesn't break down, he said don't extend your oil change.
@philliposborne5403

You are correct. But pay attention to oil quantity in modern engines. They are holding at least a quart more than their older counterparts. This increases their ability to suspend the carbon in the fluid and still lubricate the vital engine components. Same principle diesels use for years except gasoline engines aren’t as sooty. More oil, longer intervals.

These vans were fleet vehicles (80,000 - 100,000 miles every year) that were mostly driven on long trips at highway speeds pulling heavily loaded trailers along with a heavy load inside (truthfully we were overloaded most of the time) all of these vans went at least 350,000 miles before being traded off and one was had over700,000 miles on it before it was traded (bad transmission). None of these vans ever experienced an oil related engine failure. Eventually we switched over to Dodge Ram 2500 & 3500 trucks with the Cummins Diesel and we ran Mobil Delvac 1 with a 25,000 mile oil change and a filter swap at 12,500 miles pulling heavy loads mostly on highways, again we never had any engine issues with all truck being traded with over 300,000 miles and still running great! In my personal vehicles I run full synthetic oils with extended oil changes. My 98 Dodge 2500 with a 12 Valve 5.9 Cummins has 205,000 miles mostly on the farm or moving farm equipment and hay and it gets the oil changed every 25,000 miles or once a year depending on how much it’s driven, my wife’s 2005 Hyundai Tucson get the oil changed every 15,000 miles and it’s approaching 190,000 miles without any problems.

You couldnt of said it better Scotty. Haters are gonna hate. You sir have the knowledge of this stuff and the right attitude. You will be a winner in the end being a good honest mechanic. Its good that there are still honest mechanics out there such as you. I dont care what the manufacturer says or oil company I would never let our vehicle for example currently a 2011 toyota sienna go 20,000 miles between changes granted it is primarily drove on the highway more than anything just over 100 miles daily but, still would never do that. I feel if you are no better at maintaining your car than to fall for junk like that tough luck if it blows up. Even though its full synthetic oil and sometimes it not changed right at every 10,000 miles I still am not real fond of toyotas 10,000 mile interval. As we speak van is overdue right now probably 1500 miles or so but, taking care of oil change tomorrow. Your a great mechanic keep up the great work and vids.

Changing the oil every 7000km is ridiculous. Most European manufacturers have been recommending 20,000km oil change intervals since the '90s, and in Europe the vast majority of km driven are expected to be in strenuous city traffic. I usually change it at 15-17k out of an abundance of caution but 7k is just a waste, you're throwing away perfectly good oil. Use high quality 100% synthetic oil and you won't have any issues changing it at 15-20k.

The company vehicles I used to drive started to run a little funny if we went too long between oil changes. An oil change cured all the symptoms. The sensors on the engine were likely getting crossed up due to contaminants in the oil. Big diesels, like over-the-road trucks, use gallons, not quarts. Even they get stressed - mountains versus flats, for instance. And, idling in traffic jams is not especially good for truck engines, either.

It's possible if you have a good "bypass" oil filtration kit (that cleans oil more than 10x better than the best filters otherwise available) like I do and you also run a costly oil like Amsoil *and* you're a highway runner. The kit makes oil changes cost about $120-$140 for me but it lasts so much longer.

Rocket Scientist Some engines are engineered to run dirtier than others. How much oil are you burning?? Some burn-off according to manufacturer spec is "normal" but IMO more than 1 quart in 5k miles of driving is too much. Then again, depends on driving conditions and driving habits so for each person might be a little different.
@RocketScientist

Leonel Ventura It's burning a quart every 1-1,500 miles. A 2017 Cherokee we bought brand new. It's been doing it since day one. Chrysler refuses to do anything and has conveniently deemed this "normal" for the 2.4 multiair to burn that much oil.

@RocketScientist
@RocketScientist 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely not a break-in issue, its a design flaw that they will not admit to. There are literally thousands of complaints about this. Chrysler started by replacing engines, then when they got tired of that, they simply deemed it normal. In my case, did an oil consumption test. The dealer removed and disassembled the engine, took pictures, sent it to Chrysler who in turn told us to pound sand. At the rate it loses oil, I cannot take a cross-country road trip without bringing a case of oil. If I waited till the recommended change interval, I'd be OUT of oil. This is unacceptable. It's a 2017 with less than 15k miles, and it cost $35,000. I hope Scotty looks into this. It seems right up his alley.

Heat cycles, ambient temperature, cold startups, moisture, blow by combustion gases all wreck the oil properties, antioxidants, detergents, dispersants with time . Cruising on hwy at 1/5 available power with stable temperature and and load is the easiest job for engine, tranny and other mechanical components. Plus oils work best within certain temperature range when the oil additive package, etc are able to do their job properly.

The owners manual says 15,000 miles between oil changes, Now the Ford Powerstroke says 7500 miles for oil changes of the same year of truck and also holds about the same amount of oil. I use Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic 5w40 oil. To date, I have followed the oil change interval in the owner's manual and have 45k miles on it now. I think the oil is pretty good, but if you don't get the right filter (one with a silicone gasket instead of rubber), it will start leaking oil long before 20,000 miles. Mobil One had to redesign their filters for exactly this reason. Mine started leaking around 8,000 miles. The new filter/gasket is supposed to be good for 15k-20k. Of course, my Honda already has 342K on it, so the warranty is irrelevant. And, even if I have to change the oil every 8,000 miles, that's still pretty good for the price. Also, I change my oil with a 'Topsider', so I don't even have to jack up the car. Laziness FTW.

Well made modern engines, like many not direct injected, non turbo, Toyota's and Honda's, if you use decent to great synthetic oil and a high mileage oil filter, and driving normal conditions, you can easily go 10k mi/16k km. I wouldn't ever want to risk going 20k mi, but there have been people on BobistheOilGuy forum who have and their UOA's were within acceptable limits as to viscosity, acidity, additives left, and general cleanliness. Most I would ever go personally is 15K. For awhile, I was doing 5K on fully synthetic with a 20k filter and changing the filter every 15k aka 3 cycles. But I have come to realize that is over kill, and I'll be switching to 7.5K and 15k oil filter change for my spouse's car (it's nicer than mine), and 10k oil/20k filter changes on mine, using Super Techs new 20K synthetic oil. Same my 14 Jeep Grand Cherokee v8 by the time it's around 4,xxx miles it's pretty damn dirty. I've got 92k on it. My subaru 13 wrx isn't as bad but I still change both of them around 4,000 miles. I used Pennzoil ultra platinum high mileage on both cars one 5w-30 and other 5w-20. Been working great! Subbie at 112k.

Hey what about the “extended performance filters”? Is it the same thing? Whats the recommendation for a oil filter brand and oil filter change interval?

Ok but would this oil be better protection than regular mobil1 Synthetic? Like if I only plan to drive 4,000 miles on this oil ?

Just change the oil as the manufacturer advises - not difficult. Don't know why oil change intervals are a controversial topic ???

kinda dumb to change it so soon if the manufacturer is talking about conventional oil and I'm using full synthetic, I can just do an oil analysis and see how many extra miles I can do

I agree. I just put these mobile 1 products in my jeep grand cherokee and im still going to take a hard look at the oil at 5k miles. if it isnt to dark i may stretch to 7k miles. Thanks for all you do!

Changing oil according to milage is complete BS. The oil should be changed depending on crank rotations, the amount of burnt fuel, and engine temp, since that is all that matters to an engine. And news flash - modern cars have all this data, don't know why car manufacturers don't recommend changing oil based on this data.

I want to know how many miles do I need to change oil because I change my oil around in September with 188 miles and I use the Mobil 1 oil filter with 20,000 miles. Do I have to change around 193 miles?

I have a buddy who works in a dealership, he said the way some of these engines looked at 100k after these long oil change intervals looked so old
