Warning this video is what I did to prove where the horsepower was lost. I am not telling you to do likewise. This video is focused on an emissions control device so only proceed IF you understand any potential legal consequences.
The MAF calculates air flow based on the diameter of the tube being a fixed size. IF you change the diameter of the tube the calculation is wrong. By removing the insert you’ve increased the diameter of the tube without telling the ECU. This could lead to more airflow than the ECU can adjust for and you end up running a bit lean.
Reinserting the tube corrects this and returns the total fuel trim to be less than that 10%
