I helped my ex girlfriends dad rebuild his 5.7 liter flat 4 for his plane project. The pistons were enormous. The carb was tucked in right by the oil pan so the oil would keep the carb from freezing, I thought that was cool. He was really disappointed when I broke up with her. He said that I was the only boyfriend of hers who he had met, who showed any interest in planes or mechanical stuff in general.

I've always wanted to get a twin engine Cessna or something like that and use aluminum 5.3L vortec/LS engines like the lc9 or l33. I would bet you could get them under 400lb, maybe even closer to 350lb. I think the redundancy doubling the electronics.... so that way you had backups would add a bunch of weight, but I think it's still doable. Maybe use some 4.8l camshaft... they'd be way more efficient than what's in there, that's for sure.

@stubryant91459 ай бұрын
No, Porsche isn't a better choice. It was tried as a certified production engine in a later Mooney. Failed. Porsche engine is apparently much heavier in the equivalent configuration, and parts far more expensive. The well engineered aircraft conversion pieces are nowhere to be found for the Porsche so far as I can tell, yet are readily available from a couple highly reputable and qualified fellows in Florida. What would the benefit be of Porsche power in an airplane,? None that I am aware of. Seeing how a higher revving engine needs a reduction drive to turn the prop efficiently Porsche gets even heavier and less reliable. It is fairly easy to assemble a 3 liter Corvair motor which runs all day at far below it's automotive redline which is more proven and more rugged than the same size Jabiru engine which cannot keep up with the Corvair in all but a short sprint. At probably something like half the cost. What's not to like?

Do fuel injection engines exist in the piston airplane world? I think I’ve heard of it on some newly released aircraft with push button start but is there a specific big reason why people aren’t installing fuel injection kits on their carbureted engines?
@PotatoeJoe699 ай бұрын
Not really, because of the FAA's antiquated rules. I find it ironic honestly, since fuel injection works way way way way better with altitude and air density changes than carburetors do. Even more ironic is that if small piston engine aircraft could use EFI, most of the engine-out emergency landings (and crashes) that occur in small aircraft, would never happen.

I don't know anything about aviation. That said, I have to ask only 110 HP? Is this for a real airplane or a paraglider? If I fly on a single engine plane, I would hope it has more power than a 110 HP! That's like putting my old '78 Chevette engine in an airplane. That car couldn't even make it up a steep hill and maintain the speed limit!😂
@Homer8909 ай бұрын
A&P mechanic here! Hp doesn’t matter as much in planes due to the lower weight, a lot of smaller single engine planes like a Cessna 150 or 177 are around 2000lbs. Also an airplane does not have a transmission and driveshaft going to a differential to axles which then rotate tires, the simplest way to explain it is airplanes essentially have the whole car engine but spinning only the belt driven accessories and spinning a ~15lb propeller in a circle. The propeller is cut in a way similar to a fan blade to direct air in a certain direction, the act of directing that air also causes a slight push in the opposite direction of airflow. When you build enough speed through those small pushes your wings (again shaped to direct airflow and manipulate air pressure) will generate lift and allow it to fly (think of an aircraft wing as the opposite of a car’s spoiler instead of generating downforce it generates upforce otherwise known as lift).
@Homer8909 ай бұрын
Also planes don’t battle friction between the road and tires and mechanical friction between components, they only battle friction from the air AKA Air Resistance (cars also battle air resistance on top of the other forms of friction/resistance)

Mama never said it was going to be easy! There's a big difference between the couch potato life an auto engine lives and the much higher power settings an aircraft engine must endure and as close to 100% reliability as is possible. From the time it takes off at max power and then through climb, when finally it gets to loaf at an easy 70 to 75 percent for cruise and then maintains that setting for a stretch of maybe three to five hrs, by that time your honda vtec will have popped all it's pimples. Propellers are most efficient at much lower rpms than a recip. The recip in a plane doesn't need to race(acceleration/hp), to be first at the next redlight. It needs torque to turn a screw at high pitch angles for range, speed and economy. Plane engines are close to redlining where car engines are just getting started. A Cessna 152 bugsmasher makes about 130 hp at about 2600rpm out of almost 4 liters/235cu in. That's right a four banger 4L, 1 liter per cyl. It's mostly in bore since there's the regulatory need for two ignition systems. Since you have two plugs and a wide bore you start two flame fronts across the piston giving the prop a nice cushiony push. Different strokes for different folks.
@wilurbean8 ай бұрын
That's not really true Small Honda 4 bangers, the R18 as an example since it was being converted by viking? It's 1.8L, single cam, efficiency optimized vtech, aluminum block, water cooled, 140hp, 120 torque, 6900 fuel cut 5750 redline iirc. The peak torque was around 3k rpnm and peak hp was around 5500. Those motors are so low power that they gave to run 4200-4500rpm to cruise at highway speeds 70-85mph but they will do that all day, and I mean all day, 4 to 5 hours between tank full ups. A 2 or 3 :1 reduction gear would be fine, and twisting with 240-360ft lbs. It's a myth, propaganda, that car motors can't work or that they can't run fast for long, or whatever else. carbs on new motors is laughable.
@hotprop928 ай бұрын
@@wilurbean it's legendary how many have tried, how many have died on the car eng to aircraft eng conversion hill. What works for cars is weight and unnecessary complexity for AC. VTECH gone, don't need it since you won't be doing 70-75mph all day long, you'll be going 110-120mph all day long in cruise and max power for the takeoff and climb. How much does your R18 with water cooling weigh? Reduction gear is weight, adds a potential failure point and a drag on power. I don't know enough of the specifics of both and how they compare but it seems like aviation already has something close made by Rotax.
@wilurbean8 ай бұрын
@hotprop92 I chose the R18 because Viking Aircraft is actively using a derivative (L15 now, but they were using an R18 earlier, very similar motor but the L has higher compression) motor for conversion and I owned one. They weigh around 230lbs or just over 100kg - the coolant is 1.8 gal ~ 15lbs, rad and hoses are about another 20lbs - 275lbs dressed is fair I think, they use very little oil and coolant due to how small it really is. It's also an all aluminum motor, and the packaging is small. It's very comparable to an O-300 in terms of weight and performance. Also, based FV-2400TC was based a land cruiser V8, cast iron block, 4.7L with 260hp 330 torks. I think they used the sister motor, an aluminum version put in faster cars for the plane motor. Tons of torque for a car engine. Seems that plane motors are like lawn mowers than cars

My two cents, the only aircraft with auto engine I’ve had anything to do with was a v8 diesel conversion. Yes but with aviation parts come FAA regulation, paperwork, testing, closer tolerance, extreme in depth wear testing, and plenty of other headaches. When I replace a wheel and tire on an airplane I get it as an assembly (tire already installed on the wheel) but that wheel assembly is serialized, has its total amount of flight hours and takeoff/landings, NDI testing, and plenty of other things done, so much in fact it leads to a stack of sometimes 15 pages of paperwork for just a wheel with a tire on it. That paperwork then needs information transcribed into the aircraft’s log books to ensure proper accountability for maintenance is done and parts can be tracked correctly as to when they are due for replacement.
