I really appreciate this! I'm a single mom homeschooling, and it's not easy - financially and in many other ways. As long as God allows me the privilege to homeschool, I will do it and I enjoy doing it! But I need to let go of the fear of possibly needing to send my kids to public/private school in the future and like you said, trust God on His throne. And AMEN to boundaries! This is why I take a solid six weeks off in the summer and don't even look at our curriculum. I can relate to what you said - I am either homeschooling, thinking about it, prepping for it, obsessing over my kids and what they need; it will take over your life!

I have a kid who is thriving in public school high honor roll etc and a homeschool kid who is thriving - what works for someone won't work for someone else sometimes even within the same family. More and more families I know are mixed education families.

This is encouraging. We have been a homeschooling family for almost 5 years and fue to unfortunate circumstances I am enrolling my high schooler in school this year. I feel horrible guilt, but homeschooling just doesn't seem to be a good fit for him right now, although my other kids are thriving with homeschooling.

Wendy you have made some amazing points. I agree that homeschooling can take over if boundaries are not set as far as the other rolls in our home that we have and are called to. I know many families who are would like to homeschool but because of their family situation they can not so they have their children in the public school system and I agree there I nothing caring with that I think if you as a parent is present in your children(s) lives and they have a firm foundation then they will be okay. Nowadays I believe parents need to be more vigilant about what is being taught to their children . I came from the public school system like you but I do believe that what we grew up with and graduated from is completely different that today’s public school system. I went from having my oldest and middle chile in public school to homeschooling so being able to compare the two comes from my children’s experiences in the public school system of today compared to when we were in school.

We use the waldorf method and for us its a way of life. I have a set rhythm for our days and I can see where homeschooling ends and where it doesn't. A lot of times where I think it will end, instead will be my husband and I talking about lessons and blocks and family field trips on the subject we could surprise the kids with. Sometimes its my husband and I laughing over re-learning fractions and geometry together, or doing a chalkboard drawing for the next day. Its getting rid of the kids and painting the homeschool room, twice haha! Its telling friends and family what we do and sparking an interest in possible future moms, or telling people in stores and giving them hope! Homeschooling for us is everything and it brings us all together. The only actual problem I face is affording everything, so staying away from beautiful blogs, IG, FB, youtube and comparing myself to others that do that I do, is just my inner work and between me, God and my husband... Another way to connect and get over these hurdles together.

Homeschooling is definitely taking over my world. My son is autistic and if I stop school for too long he seems to digress and he is struggling and behind already. Between his therapies and school I’m exhausted. I need to work in time off from school but struggling to determine how

Good points… God is in control and on His throne regardless of schooling situations. And it can continue to change as the years progress. And I can take breaks from all things homeschooling (especially the planning) for other parts of life. Thanks, Wendy!

So good… exposing our kids to other perspectives is so important. Good for them to experience that as they are growing up. Funny story, Corban just told me today that he met a kid last week at VBS who doesn’t believe in dinosaurs. 🦕

In our family, as our children get older, we like to see which adults they gravitate toward, then we like to encourage and nurture those relationships. Many of these people are from our church, others are musical instrument teachers, etc. We want our children to have healthy relationships with other adults besides us. We also are very open to answering our kids questions about things that come up in life as we are out and about or after they’ve spent time with friends, etc. We try to take it back to the Bible and ask them what God says about the issue. Sometimes they know. Sometimes they don’t know, but can figure it out. Other times they need our help and guidance. We try to be really clear about what things are our opinion and what things are right and wrong according to God’s Word. We want them to be discerning and able to navigate life and decisions without our help, so we try to give them opportunities to do that while they are young in ways that are healthy and appropriate. We don’t throw them to the wolves and wish them luck!! We just listen, ask questions, discuss, guide, and let them make choices where appropriate. More and more as they grow in maturity and in age. Now our teens love coming to us about lots of things. Part of that was us practicing not freaking out about things when they were younger.

I disagree that the public schools in America today are a great choice. There is almost always a better way, though we may not see it at first. I don't say this to shame a parent's choice. It's more of a warning label, proceed with extreme caution and make this a temporary solution.

I agree it may not be the best choice for everyone, but as a public school graduate myself, I know that not all schools are the same. My widowed mom was raising three children, putting herself through school, working full-time, and battling depression. Homeschooling wouldn’t have been feasible for her. I truly believe she made the best choice for us, and being homeschooled would have been detrimental in our situation. In addition to that, my husband, who is a public school teacher, often encounters foster children for whom school is actually their safe space. Homeschooling would be detrimental for them. Unfortunately, we live in a broken world, and it never is as black-and-white as it may seem.

I think the way to put it is public school is the best for some people because they can’t access better. We need public school so all can be educated but in an ideal world, education would be so much better. I was public schooled as well. It’s a major reason I am not doing public school for my kids. If someone is not in a desperate situation, I think there are 100 different avenues to pursue before public school.
