Seriously, the cinematography on your videos are amazing! I wish I knew how to do that!! And that intro, stunning!!!

Genuinely feel like a lot of the criticism Huawei gets comes from a slight snobbishness, slight fear of the unknown and also people not wanting to admit that their top of the line Samsung/google/apple phone could be matched by a lesser known/less fashionable make. I’ve always used HTC and Samsung and have recently switched to the P20 pro and I wish I’d switched sooner. The battery in particular blows everything else out of the water and I’m no longer having to carry a charger between work and home in case my phone dies before the end of the day. Would encourage anyone to make the switch and experience it for yourself. Don’t pay too much attention to some of the criticism here. The issue about the phone coming pre-loaded with proprietary apps? Samsung do the same thing, as do Apple. The phone wobbles due to lens placement? My old GS6 Edge+ wobbles too. The phone’s stock settings aren’t finely tuned for optimal performance? Doesn’t that happen with pretty much every piece of tech you buy nowadays?

Ohh, girl, that twilight is the most beautiful colour/combinations of colours i've seen on a smartphone EVER, like literally.

"4k is the current standard" am I the only one who left behind?

Jeez, the whole standard thing is getting out of hand. Just a couple of years ago a fingerprint scanner on the front was totally okey and now people are bashing it like never before just because "the other phones have it on the back" (read the last part with a whining childs voice). So moving the finger an inch or two is today considered too much. Having three cameras isn't enough, you need to be able to shoot a short film on them now at 4K, which let's be honest, the majority never even use. And speakers need to sound like you're in a concert or else they are worthless. Also, the phone has to have a processor that can't even use its full potential, but people just need to know its in there. And let us not even start on the RAM. If a phone needs more than 4 gigs of RAM to run smoothly, the fault falls on the software and its optimization. But then again, the price is crazy.

Now here's the thing. Excellent review btw. But honestly even if the Kirin 970 "is outdated" you have to remember that Huawei releases new chips in Q4 of each year. You can't just state "The 845 is the latest generation which makes the 970 old".. Just an example. The 970 is good enough as it is. What you should do is in 2019, come back and see how the Mate 10 holds up in performance. And if it does it proves the AI actually did what was necessary to keep the device running optimally. In my experience, Samsung's devices get extremely chuggy after A year or so. Samsung's Skin is only now really optimized so it should be a better experience (Pun intended).

Please name one or two use scenarios where you get frustrated because the phone wobbles laying flat on a table. I have a hard time believing this being a real concern... Enlighten me, please!

I love your videos, I love your cinematography, I love your reviews, and I love your content. I know I may be a little nitpicky, but I think the titles are a little bit clickbait-y. But other than that, this is another great video! :)

Note about the 40mp sensor. Keep in mind the sensor size is much bigger, this is the main reason why its better. Also the 40mp sensor is used to merge pixels to create more light, so the actual 40mp sensor is not for taking 40mp pictures mainly but rather to help doing an impressive picture that is 10mp.

Finally, someone honest! I feel that all the other reviews just focus on the camera (which in real world usage i don't believe to be leagues above the competition), so that they can ignore the screen, processor and other aspects of this phone's shortcomings.

I have this phone and it's absolutely incredible, blows me away everyday. Seriously, the P20 Pro is something else 😍

Everyone goes on about 4k yet the average user doesn't have 4k most people still use 1080p. I also have the p20 Pro and I think it's a great phone and I prefer this to the Samsung galaxy s8 I had I find myself never touching 4k on any of the phones I have ever used

Sadly the comments about the Kirin being 'a chip that falls way behind current generation' is just not correct...It may not be up there with the very best 845...but it is more than capable of driving a top end smart phone to its potential and certainly not way behind!!!

I love those people who rant about how a notch gives you so more screen real estate and rock navigation buttons on their phone which has a physical home button.

I have read most of the comments and I don't think half of them know what they talking about. Firstly this is their imaging device. The P series concentrates on the camera functions. The sensor size is bigger than all smartphones.. Do you guys know what that means? When you buy an apsc sensor camera vs a full frame, do you know how much extra you need to pay just for the sensor size? The phone also has a dac chip to convert 32bit audio. 3x optical zoom and 5x hybrid zoom. If you want the fastest chip then wait for the Mate series. That is their powerhouse series. That's how Huawei functions. I am not a Huawei fan but what they have done is very clever. Controlling most of the functions with their AI chip means limitless possibilities just with a software upgrade. If you want ios ecosystem then Apple is your choice. If you want to play games or heavy processor work then choose s9+ if you want a phone to replace your point and shoot camera then it is Huawei p20 pro. If Huawei gave you the latest chipset with the p20 pro camera will you guys be willing to pay £2000+ for a Huawei phone? Ask your self.

I bought my Huawei P20 Pro in mid-June 2018. As I had an existing deal from a carrier, I bought the phone outright and just added the SIM card. My Huawei P20 Pro cost £665 from Three. Overall I am very happy with the camera (although the lack of image stabilisation for 4K video is a problem). The screen is good and the battery life is amazing. A 4000 m/Amp/Hour battery is great.

Still strong and perfect daily phone for me, for almost a 3 years from now! Mine is still in mint condition. Battery after exactly 2 years and 9 months of everyday usage with dual sim and mobile data always on, lasts for whole day! Btw Well done and comprehensive review, mrwhosetheboss! 😉

I'm watching this video in 2024 on the p20 pro. Your videos nowadays have come a long way. It is funny to see how much you and your reviews have improved. The p20 pro was my favorite brand after switching from a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone. I definitely would have stayed with Huawei if the US - Sanction wasn't there.

2 years into using this phone and it's still working amazingly, and when I got it, it was by far the best phone I've laid my hands on. Although im switching to the Sony Xperia 1 II, instead of staying with Huawei, because the lack of GMS really puts me off.

Loving your videos. Just thought this review of the Huawei P20 pro was a bit brutal if I'm being honest with you. The P20 is a beast.Considering the ground that Huawei has made on Apple and Samsung over the past few years. Their phones are getting better and better.

I don't think Kirin 970 is that bad. It is really capable and with NPU and 6GB of RAM it beats some phones with SD845 or SD835 or even A11 Bionic. It can defenitly serve you 2-3 years at least

Honest review but too short in order to stress enough the advantages of the p20 over the other flagships. As for the conclusions i dont agree with them. Kirin is a very powerful chip that flies through every day tasks. Huawei focused on nighttime photography because that was the only part that seperated phones from dslrs. Daytime photography wise, even my old iphone 5c takes great photos. P20 paved the way and the other competitors try to catch up. Thats the epilogue to your review.

Honestly, an excellent review. Very much enjoyed watching this and it's comparisons for what we can obtain in the UK. I'm a massive Huawei fan and with every iteration we can see big improvements. Benchmarks aren't everything and the overall feel of the phone has been expressed really well. Keep up the good work.

P20 is a real beast

Great review , believe its truly an honest one. Heres why i chose the P20 pro as my phone: While it's true that samsung s9+ is the faster, brighter phone, with headphone jack and sd slot as well, It still looks as if thou it hasnt been a huge step-up from the s8+, The emoji thing, we all know that apps like bitmoji actually do a better job. I have an S7 edge, and i was super excited for the s9+, but very underwhelmed, at how similar it is to my two year old phone. I was NOT expecting Huawei to step up and actually be up there with Samsung, nobody expected such a huge steu from the P10, this is clearly a huge upgrade as compared to the P10, This phone stands out, The colours the body, those three cameras, make it truly stand out, Huawei is by far not the market leader, but you an clearly see that they have worked hard with this one, and I admire that. I can see this as their pride and joy and I want a piece of that.Personally I dont use video much so the stabilization issue will not affect me at all.

Was looking at the Pixel 3 XL but annoyingly my provider doesn't sell them. Then at the weekend the bottom half of my screen on my existing Xperia decided it would die meaning I couldn't unlock it. With my contract ending in 2 months I decided there was no point buying a temp phone so opted for this ( I swore off of iphones years ago & had gotten bored of Sony's phones trying to set fire to my hand if filming for more than 2 mins in HDR when the ambient temp wasnt minus 40). I opted for it off of what you said ( ordered it shortly after watching. It's nice to see a 'no BS' review so TY for the video

Only thing i disagree with you is the front camera, it is the best i've seen out there. I started this gen with an iphone x coming from an s7 edge and was so unsatisfied with the battery life and the no button usage was kinda hard for me so i got a p20 pro instead and can say i've never been so satisfied this much with a phone before BUT that is mainly because i dont play games or do much editing on my smartphones. Speed, camera and the battery life is my expectations from a phone overall but thats just me.

4 years later still loving this phone

Me and the missus bought a S9+ (her) and P20 Pro at the same time last week. Within a few days she's already wanted to swap. She wasn't impressed with the camera and prefers her LG G5, P20 kills the S9+ battery wise and the final deal breaker was the WTF are Samsung thinking screenshot mode where you have to make a Jedi mindtrick motion to take a shot, which only works 50% of time. Edit: Oh and she's really pissed there's no beauty mode for selfies, which Googling, seems to be a feature on previous Samsung Galaxy phones but they removed it. Which is mystifying. As for the P20 Pro impressions, fantastic build, amazing camera and screen. EMUI Launcher I can take it or leave it, tried Nova but it kept crashing, it does the job. Most amazing thing about this phone is the battery. As I'm typing this it's just gone 4.00pm. My previous LG G6 would be done to around 20% of battery life, my Pro is on 67% with same use. Amazing. For the camera AI is hit and miss, but that's what manual options are there for. I'm going raving this weekend, I'll take some shots mid-rave with lasers ahoy for a real world test of the low-light. 90% of my pictures are always taken in clubs :P

The 40MP sensor benefits 10MP by using a type of "supersampling" combining 4 pixels into one to reduce noise and make overall better pictures. How come so many people fail to realize this and keep saying there is no good reason for the 40MP and you will find yourself using the 10MP mode instead. Yes, you will use 10MP mode instead as the main reason for 40MP is the supersampling....

I agree. Whilst I actually like Huawei's alternate release cycle of putting out 2 flagship series' per year, one series where the focus is on the camera technology (P series) and then another series where they implement the new processor (Mate series) and although I love Huawei phones, the Kirin 970 is HiSilicon's/Huawei's current gen flagship chip... With some disgustingly outdated features equivalent to that of the SD 821; BT 4.2 and 4k @ 30fps for instance. Most phones with the Kirin 970 chipset are company flagships, but just not 'flagships' according to the set of features. Just like a phone with an SD 821 wouldn't be considered a flagship today, neither really should any phone with a Kirin 970. Really hope the Kirin 980 at the end of the year, for the first time for Huawei, manages to implement the latest standards.

I bought one and generally love it. The fingerprint scanner is indeed a bit crap and the screen size is weird and does not work well on the internet but this new size seems to be almost standard now. I much prefer 16 x 9 though. Battery life is excellent and it feels fast. I think you have misunderstood the 40m camera though. It down converts to 10m to make the image better using it in 40m is not really what it is meant for. I bought it mainly for the camera and so far it us better than anything I have ever used before.

If Kirin 970 is not a great cpu, I don't know what is.. srsly! Saying it like it's a con is just absurd. Good review, but because of this, and the sad narrative like P20 is doomed from the beginning, is a thumbs down from me

iam currently owning an S6. what really borthers me with the p20 and even the s7,8 and 9 is the default aspect ratio of the photos. my s6 has its max MP resolution in 16:9. the p20 and the other galaxys are 4:3. if you wanna use a full screen aspect ratio with the p20 you have to go down on the resolution to 7mp in order to shoot widescreen photos. there might be a reason for that and i bet, some experts can give me 10 reasons why 4:3 is better but the only thing i see in 4:3 is less wide angle, thus a smaller picture

My P20 Pro is still going strong and enjoy using it daily. Can I still continue using as no longer get security updates from Huawei (Nov 20) although they did upgrade to Android 10 which rocks and now get the monthly Google play security updates...so ok to keep using?

I am just going to wait for google pixel 3 and pixel 3xl That A.I scene though ! 😂

How is Kirin 970 slower than Snapdragon 845? How do you compare them? By benchmark? Don't make a claim if you don't know.

I thought about the S9+, but am pleased I went with the P20 Pro, the camera is phenomenal, and the slight, very slight differences in speed don't bother me at all. It feels great in the hand, the facial unlock is super quick, as is the fingerprint. Best phone I've ever owned.

Very honest video. You hit the nail on the head and have not got carried away in the hype. It's a solid phone that runs last year's SoC. The Mate 20 or whatever it's going to be called will have the Kirin 985 and hopefully do away with all the shortcomings that you highlighted. Keep up the great work!

A very reasonable, informative and great review you've done here. Got mine at launch and I do feel that this is definitely one of the best phones atm. I truly understood the few setbacks you mentioned about the phone; for example no 4K video shooting with stabilisation, no wireless charging, display isn't as good as Samsung but I can definitely do away with those features as it had everything to do with its performance such as battery life, the RAM, the storage and the three lens camera. That is definitely why I chose the phone and couldn't be more happier. Had a Sony XZ Premium and I couldn't wait to get rid after hearing about this phone the other week and it was the best decision I made Great review.

I got this phone on Friday. I love it. I saved heaps and got free QCII headphones compared to the S9+. The battery is amazing and I love the notch, it's just an extra bit of screen I can have my apps in to me. I check my phone a lot, I don't let them pile up so the reduced space for that area doesn't mean anything (I do wish I could move the Wifi and signal icons to the right though). However, I do think that the next OnePlus and LG phones will be better than this phone (apart from battery and zoom) so as you've missed any pre-order deals, I'd wait for at least one to be announced if you can wait.

About water resistance.... I was once swimming with my p20 pro in a fckig lake for almost an hour. I simply forgot about it in my pocket and its fine. Like nothing happened. I have dropped it many more Times than i wished and its again... fine. Back Glass is broken, aluminium frame is scraped and screen has many deeper grooves like on lvl 7 because i have peeled original screen protection 2 days after i got it brand new. This Phone is a smartphone tank. And its still snappy and Quick. Love it

I wanna see a review in 2 years. My dad bought a Huawei a few years ago, it was great at the beginning, fast, great camera, etc. But after about a year, it started getting slower, the pictures he sent me are kinda pixelated (although they looked perfect on his Huawei), the screen would randomly turn blue, etc. Idk if he got a bad product, but it's kinda typical for Chinese products to have a short lifespan...

I have been using this phone for about a month now, coming from a OnePlus 5T. In general I really like the phone, the camera's performance is truly outstanding. I am not convinced about the emui skin that Huawei uses for Android. I have used Android my entire smartphone life and I think this is one of the weaker versions of Android skins, it feels like there is a lot of finetuning left to do, it might also be that I still have to get used to it. I also feel my OP 5T was in general the smarter and better balanced phone, more user friendly. Battery life is very good but I don't see that much of a difference between this and the 5T in practice. With my 5T I had several problems from the start, such as bluetooth connectivity issues and the speaker going up and down in volume when on a call, this made me decide to switch to the P20. Overall I am happy with my P20, it's definitely not perfect but comes very close. When you need a phone with long battery life and the best camera in the game, this is your choice.
