Howard is admitting without directly saying it, that timing the purchase of securities is the best way to make a lot of money, and you can't do that unless you have money on the sideline. This mentality is the exact opposite of "advisors" who state that you must be fully invested at all times. What's best for advisors isn't the best advice for investors. The same goes for being diversified. It's ok to be diversified if you don't know what you're doing.

"The key to investing is not buying good things, it's buying things well" is the complete and polar opposite of Terry Smith's approach. He would tell you to only buy the best companies and buy them cheaply enough. Interesting to see differing philosophies in investing.
