So much reverence and his portfolio underperformed the S&P 500 in the last 30 years by almost 2% annually.

Hi. That's a good point. I believe that is the case because the University Endowment doesn't benchmark the S&P500. By design, the university endowment builds models with higher asset classes and geographic diversification to (allegedly) reduce volatility and/or Risk. So, it is reasonable not to beat the S&P 500. They just look to other KPIs. Extra data: yaledailynews.com/blog/2023/10/30/yale-endowment-performance-on-par-with-peers-in-slow-year-for-university-investment-returns/

Howard is admitting without directly saying it, that timing the purchase of securities is the best way to make a lot of money, and you can't do that unless you have money on the sideline. This mentality is the exact opposite of "advisors" who state that you must be fully invested at all times. What's best for advisors isn't the best advice for investors. The same goes for being diversified. It's ok to be diversified if you don't know what you're doing.

HI. Thank you for your comment. It is a hot topic. Like Buffett and Pabrai, Charles Ellis suggests that average, nonprofessional retail investors would be better off sticking to passive index funds. If you are an expert or invest enough time to become one, you can day trade, you can stock pick and be an active investor. No problem. He points out that a self-made individual investment expert must compete with professionals with more info, bigger teams, and more extensive resources than an individual expert. We can agree or not.

If you add the cost of the research hours someone puts for active investing and considering the skill whould indicate you whould get paid more than the minimum wage, it does not make sense if you do not enjoy it. Unless by active investing you mean starting your own business (that does not earn revenue from investing in other businessess) as you are paid for managing the business (even if initially most of that pay is reinvested).

"The key to investing is not buying good things, it's buying things well" is the complete and polar opposite of Terry Smith's approach. He would tell you to only buy the best companies and buy them cheaply enough. Interesting to see differing philosophies in investing.
