Over the past few years we are asked the same question: Should Jordan Romano maintain the closing role? The question to me sounds a bit silly... He has been one of the best closers in baseball the past few years and I hope in today's video I can prove it once and for all.

Romano is a good closer, very good even, but not a great one: What I see is a reliever with high-end stuff, but a lack of control at times. This can lead him to walk guys in leverage situations which is never a great quality. His amazing fastball-slider combo is elite when you see its effectivity, but there are too many hitters (mainly lefties) who are able to handle both offerings, which is when you see drawn-out counts and walks spike. This is why it can be detrimental to heart-health to see him pitch in some situations as well. To me it feels like he needs a third pitch, something like a splitter, changeup, or sinker to really reach the elite-eschalon we know he's capable of. If he can give the batter a different look than what he currently has even 10% of the time, it will allow his other pitches to become that much more effective by extention and it will also give him a reliable way of dealing with lefties who can handle high heat. All that being said, still love him

When his fastball and slider are on point, he's one of the best closers in the game.

Some other stats to consider. BA against, a low .218 OB% against, a reasonably low .301 K/9 11.0, very good Inherited runners 18, only 2 scored Here’s where his stats deteriorated last year G/B to F/B: 57 to 93 His worst year and a lot of hard hit fly balls to the warning track. K/BB, 3.0 his worst year to date. Walking a few more batters. He has walked more and his ground ball rate has dropped a fair amount. Last 3 years he has been asked to face 250 batters on avg. The jays need more offence so he isn’t asked to carry such a heavy load. IMHO.

it's always been the non-save situations that have made him look bad. Chad Green or someone of that ilk needs to be in tie games. Romano should majority wise be used in close outs. That's his job. and hes damn good at it. Schneider overused him in ties.

Let's hope Schneider wakes up and doesn't put him in a NON save situation

Romano is a great closer. The thing is he gets put in in non save situations and i dunno how John Schneider put him in non save situations.IMO put Yimi Garcia Eric Swanson or like Tim Mayza if there is a buncha leftys

Might be time for another TJS. He's in that max time range for 2nd TJS and has elbow inflamation. Put some faab on Yimi Garcia this week.

Romano is a great closer. One of the very best in the MLB. I dont understand the hate given the stats. baseball is all about the stats day in day out

Closers should not be put into tie games. They seem to struggle in this situation at a high percentage. Need a specialist for tie games i guess.

Tell me the stats with one run, two run, and 3 run saves. To me this makes a huge difference. Being up 3 runs and getting a save is a joke imho.

Relievers' IP are relatively small making their stats subject to increased variability. Splitting them into smaller qualified sample sizes, the amount of a lead in your example, makes the numbers unusable.

@@markryan3739 I disagree. The rule is if the reliever comes in and their lead is 3 runes or less and the team wins without extra innings they get credited with a save. So if you sent Romano out there in a situation where they have a 3 run lead those should be converted at a much higher rate than if they just have a 1 run lead. One run leads are true saves to me. Romano has a tendency to give up home runs, that why he scares me. Some people just don’t gave what it takes to pitch under high stress situations.

@@johnwillock6787 Congratulations. You've just described very well the stat WPA. It's a stat for pitchers that quantifies the game situation. Basically it takes into account the inning, the lead, the position of base runners and the number of outs to calculate a score for that particular situation. As an example, no one out, bases loaded, one run lead is going to have a higher score than bases empty, no one out and a three run lead. Saves is a bad stat because it doesn't add context. In both of the examples above, if the pitcher closes out the game successfully they are credited with a save, but the context of the game is drastically different.
