Lectins are found in various quantities in different foods. Always soak your legumes (beans, lentils etc) and grains long before cooking them. This will make nutrients in those foods much more absorbable and the lectins will be reduced considerably.

Great video. So, we can't eat lectins, PUFAs, carbs, sugar, transfats, oxylates, acrylamides, aflatoxins, processed foods, nightshades, gluten, pesticides, glyphosates, heavy metals, arsenic, phytates, etc. ....Whats left? Pretty hard these days to eat a healthy diet. If you really avoid all of these there is very little left to choose from. Good luck!

@@Jb-ky1ri yes, cooking your vegetables, that is heat treatment like boiling in water to 100 celcius, in the oven, or fried. It will make the lectins really healthy. It's very simple really, just cook your beans and your vegetables. And btw eat a varied diet with many different kinds of primarily vegetables. That being said don't need to cook like a tomato if you are just going to eat like a few of them, you can eat them raw (wash them first, always wash vegetables), unless you have a allergic reaction to raw tomatoes that is, which the vast majority of people do not have.

Eating beans should actually be common because the body needs to acquire the bacteria to digest them. It takes about 2 weeks to acquire the necessary bacteria and once acquired, no longer causes much flatulence. I eat beans every day and don't have any more flatulence than when I don't eat them. Also, in a study of longevity of 5 nations, beans were the only food that correlated to longer life. Correlation isn't causation, but a 5 nation study over a long period lends a lot of weight that eating a high amount of beans is healthy.

Annually I consume about 60 pounds of beans, and no, people, I do not get gas because my gut bacteria is healthy.
@brianmerkosky9243
@brianmerkosky9243 6 жыл бұрын
@@zabelicious True... If your gut is damaged then beans are harder to digest however the video seems to suggest that excessive beans can cause a damaged gut and looking at all the blue zones and their bean consumption pretty much proves this false. Leaky gut as mentioned in the video is almost always caused by SIBO and SIBO also always has a cause and those causes are food poisoning, H. pylori, hypothyroidism, weak stomach acid or taking PPI medication or antacids, parasites, and open surgery near the digestive tract. Beans aren't the cause but can make your symptoms worse if you already have SIBO. Studies have shown that 85% of IBS sufferers have SIBO and 10% of seemingly healthy people also have it. It's an epidemic in the West but interestingly the study on Japan showed almost nobody there has it and they eat a lot more beans and legumes than we do in North America so beans and lectins in general definitely aren't the cause of poor digestion. They can just aggravate symptoms in people that already have it. I know this because I have SIBO but am currently in the process of treatment so hopefully I'll be cured in the next few weeks. Most people that have SIBO don't even know it and just live their life with these symptoms and then try to avoid healthy foods because their digestion can't handle them. This leads to even more problems with the gut microbiome because the foods that feed SIBO also feed our good bacteria and if we cut them out we start to really damage our gut flora and promote more bad bugs being in there.

So, lectins in small doses are good, but too many wear out your gut lining and lead to leaky gut, possibly. I tried a grain-free Gaps diet, but couldn't digest food. I've added sprouted grains, (other than hopeless wheat), and soaked and boiled legumes to a low carb diet, for fiber. Sprouting reduces lectins, apparently. Also cooled-off starches after cooking, then re-heated. It seems to be speeding up my recovery. Essentially no dairy. I use coconut milk and coconut oil, also virgin olive oil. No sugar, or refined flour. Organic fruits and vegetables. Erythritol, monk fruit drops, or stevia for sweetening. I soak my oat flakes overnight with water and a little apple cider vinegar, before making oatmeal. I made bread with sprouted rice flour, coconut flour, and tapioca flour, and it came out condensed and crumbly. But edible.

Yea, I have to agree with the masses here. Doctor Gundry essentially says, that, as your gut heals, you can reintroduce other things. Only very few plant foods contain lectins that a healthy GI tract can't breakdown. I eat blueberries, apples, avocado, raspberries, strawberries, mangoes, and pineapple, and I am still following his recommended diet. You haven't ACTUALLY read his literature, and are merely adopting opinions (or propoganda) of others. Read one of his books (I read "The Plant Paradox") and form your own opinion. Disclaimer: I often sound condescending, when I do not intend it. A truly healthy diet, is not something most people learn unless they have to. The info is not available through the nationally recognized establishments. I don't judge. Nor do I mind if you judge me as a quack for discrediting the medical industry. By most people's definition (unfortunately for them), I am a quack.

Dr. Peter D'Adamo has been talking and writing about them for decades. Lots of nutrition books now talking about lectins. 'Eat Right for Your Type' was the first, over twenty years ago. Nice to see they're catching up, but most conveniently don't mention that lectin specificity is often to a particular ABO blood type antigen. Giving dietary advice about lectins but not including blood type specificity is like giving just your city and state to someone who is asking for your mailing address. The letter is very unlikely to ever arrive!

UpToDate “Lectin pathway activation - A deficiency of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) appears to be a cause of recurrent infections in children, although MBL deficiency predisposing to infectious or noninfectious tissue damage is controversial [46,47]. Although lectins increase in inflammatory states, they are usually not present in sufficient quantities to cause a reduction in C4 or C3 outside of the normal range. One could view the lectin pathway as a low level alarm system that facilitates the early response to bacterial infections and/or tissue damage (secondary to the presence of altered sugar moieties). The lectin pathway has been implicated in the pathophysiology of a variety of cardiac conditions but sometimes with opposite or ambiguous functions [48]. The lectin pathway appears to play an important role in the susceptibility to rheumatic fever and clinical progression to rheumatic heart disease [48]. Additionally, activation of the lectin pathway in the glomerulus in immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy has been associated with more severe renal disease [49]. The study implicated a contribution of both MBL and L-ficolin in the progression of disease. As more studies focus on the clinical outcomes of lectin pathway activation, additional associations may be expected.”

Not to consume a lot of beans ? Why not , beans and legumes in general are simply the best food you can put in your system, blue zones have thing in common : they all consume legumes regularly and in large quantities. As for the beans giving fart , this has been debunked long ago, there is other food that are much worse in that regards , like dairy for example . Lectins are non issue, period!

Cooking on a stove top is ok also, as long as you bring it to a fairly rapid boil for the initial 30-45 minutes... after all, historically pressure cookers were not invented nor in widespread use until fairly recently. Third world contries, whom are the largest consumers of beans, continue the tradition without a pressure cooker. But what is bad is cooking beans in a crock pot.

The stomach's function is to break down food particles for absorption through the gut lining. The problem is that we damage our guts with many different things e.g. medications, gmo's, pesticides, antacids, antibiotics, pesticides, etc. I took long acting antacids for many years (cimetidine, ranitidine, etc) and my stomach stopped producing acid in sufficient quantities. No acid in the stomach means nothing to break the food down. The result is that I have chronic acid reflux. This is where the trouble starts. Pancreas secrete digestive enzymes but if you interfere with meds like antacids, the pancreas stop working and you have nothing to digest your food with and break it down. This creates inflammation and the inability to absorb nutrients. There is a big domino effect and it is somewhat complex but once the lining is damaged, anything (undigested particles, bacteria, virus, parasites, et) can go through and it goes into the blood. If your gut lining is not damaged, lectins should not be a problem

@@JigsawHealthTV Pressure cooking destroys the most lectins.. which is why Dr Stephen Gundry, a world reknowned Cardiologist, recommends it above other cooking methods. And it has to do with lectin sensitivity. Have you read his book Plant Paradox about lectin sensitivity and how it is linked to things like heart disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's and other inflammatory bowel diseases and more? I have personally seen a friend who has had rheumatoid arthritis and Chrohn's since childhood (she is now 50) improve so much in just 4 months on a "lectin-free" diet that her specialists have cut her medications in half! She says that she has never felt this good in her life! And she intends to stay "lectin free" for the rest of her life. She is only 1 of thousands who have had these results. So if going lectin free is helping people, why do you speak against it?

It's a little know fact in the US but true nonetheless, if you eat beans every day for 2 weeks (it doesn't have to be a whole lot of them either) you will grow gut flora that will break them down such that they won't give you gas. I did that years ago while I was between gf's and know that it works. It isn't immediate though. I found that I didn't notice much of a difference right after the 2 weeks period was over and thought it didn't work for me at first, but tried eating them again about 6 weeks after I began the 2 weeks of eating beans and it was like a miracle - no gas. I really love pinto beans and baked beans and eat them for lunch every day I have to work and absolutely no gas from the beans. Potatoes broccoli and tomato products still cause it so I eat that stuff in moderation only. Hope this helps someone:)

Just boil them well as it removes nearly all the lectins anyway, there were no pressure cookers in the remote Blue Zones! Their diets were high in lectin-containing foods. It has never been convincingly proven that lectins are bad in the way that people usually cook and prepare them, there was ONE study in 1988 where hospital staff vomited after eating red kidney beans. They were most likely still raw/undercooked, nobody eats raw grains and legumes anyway.
