Your 2nd oil was black because of the old filter you left in. I do flush my engines, without intermittent oil, just drain the old, in with the new, always crystal clear afterwards. Few things to pay attention: jack up/lift the car in a way all the oil can drain out from the sump. For ex if the drain plug is at the left side, and the car slightly tilting right, there will be some leftover at the sump. Let it drain for a good while, and clean the oil filter housing as good as possible. A small quantity can darken the new oil.
@marflitts
@marflitts 6 ай бұрын
Tip. Remove oil filter first, then any excess will drain into the sump before/during draining the sump. If you want to check this happens, drain it like you did before until you are just down to drips coming out then remove the oil filter, you will then see the extra coming out. The way you did it you will be adding clean oil to approx 300 ml of dirty oil after you were being so meticulous getting the small amount out while doing the filter. Anyway nice video.

Exactly. I would change the oil filter after draining the oil from the engine flush. There's also about 1/2 a quart of filthy oil in there that can be extracted with a turkey baster.

I change my oil every 10,000 miles for many years and never had any issues, my 2005 Acura RL was at 210,000 miles and still ran like new before selling it for an upgrade. I use only Mobile 1 full synthetic with mobile 1 filter. I never did engine flush. Though I did fill up with chevron fuel every now and then just to run Techron to clean my injectors. Now days you can buy the bottles they sell everywhere and add it to any fuel brand you put in. After many years of research and results, that’s where I’m at and it works great.

I do exactly what you do 😂 I use Mobil1 Extended Performance High Mileage, an extended performance Mobil1 filter, and every 10k miles pour Chevron Techron additive in the gas tank. I've been doing this for close to 20 years now. I've never had engine problems and typically keep my cars for 250k miles.

My mechanic recommended me to never put any flushes into the engine unless it is the last thing you got to do to save the engine. First of all there is still some flush material left in the engine after all. Secondly, these flushes can pick up all the dirt and grime and clog the oil strainers and other tiny channel that feed the oil in the system. There are lots of cases where these flushes did more bad than good, and it is up to the owner if he wants to take chances. So, in case your engine is filthy inside, you got to do several frequent oil changes with short intervals like 500 miles, then 1000 miles, then 1500 miles etc. in between. Also choose the oil that contains good amount of detergents. Thus, after 3-4-5 oil changes eventually you will clean your engine safely. I bought a 180K miles Accord which was owned by some idiot from the very beginning who changed oil every 10K miles and 1 year that lead to making the engine inside look like shit. I did 5 oil changes within the next 5000 miles and I must say the car started breathing full lungs and the oil finally took decent color and shape. Some people actually claim they had good experience with flushes but I actually decided to not take my chances.

If your engine is full of sludge then maybe it can clogged the oil feed line when using an engine flush, My goal is to prevent the sludge before it gets really bad. That will be a costly engine repair. When doing engine flush as part of maintenance, then the engine will be running properly and no worries about sludge build up (just my opinion). I would have changed my oil first with Mobil 1 or other moderate synthetic and new filter, Ran it for 10 minutes, and drained that. Filled it again run fresh and then added the flush. A new filter is $10 to $15 even for ones that filter down to 20 microns at 99% efficiency. Starting with clean oil and a clean filter to do your flush and doing the extra clean oil run and rinse is a pretty small cost in the grand scheme of things.. Do it once when you first buy the car and do it again after 100k miles or after a chemical / intake valve cleaning. My Mini needs the valves cleaned. It had 136k miles on it when i got it. I'm going to be doing both on it in the near future. Your point about avoiding clogging oil pump screens is good, but the precaution for it is simply a pre-oil change.

@nicholaspetre1

Ok, if you really got to do the engine flush with some of these popular chemicals on KZfaq and Amazon, first drain the current dirty oil, then add a new oil together with the flush material to it, run for 15 mins, then drain and fill 2 times more and run for 20-30 mins to properly clean engine of that flush material, and only after that add the oil you will drive with for next 3K miles. For regular 4 cyl car you will need about 20 qts of oil total to do this procedure correctly. Once you drain the oil with the flush chemical, just adding new oil is not enough as it is too much residue left inside the engine and you need to change the oil at least 2 times after that to properly remove that residue. After that procedure is over, only then it is ok to add the oil that you re gonna drive with. When doing these short oil changes, no need to buy some fancy oil. You can get basic for $18-20 for 5 qts as you gonna use it for 20-30 mins only. After that at the very end you can fill in with Mobil or Pennz or else you think provides good protection and lubricity for 3K-5K depends on the usage.

Thank you for making these videos. I'm planning on doing a flush in the near future. And I like your idea of the double oil change. The color check you did seems logical but at the volume in the bottle the color can be very deceiving. If you ever do this again, try looking at a much thinner sample, (like some poured on a piece of paper). You will more likely be able to see the actual difference between the two samples. I do large batch dying in a manufacturing process. I've been fooled, especially by black.

It really depends how worn out your piston rings are. If there are signs of wear and black tar deposits under the oil cap it may be worth a try. But the following risk exists. The rings even if worn out have set in inside the cylinder walls. After the flush that may change and the car may start burning more oil than before. If the car is burning oil and the oil level goes down then you have to keep adding oil and doing oil changes every 3.5-4k miles. If the oil gets dark sooner changing the oil more often is also a good idea. If you drive a lot in cold weather with short trips then changing oil more frequently may be a good idea too. If it is a diesel the oil color always gets black sooner so the oil color alone Is not a good indicator. At any rate, your mileage may vary. Literally.

Thanks for posting the video! The filter wasn't changed after the first oil change. The black color could simply be dirt from the filter tha made its way into the new oil. A good indicator of the amount of residue left after the first cleaning would have been to either replace the filter with a new one (maybe a cheap filter) or run the engine without the filter fir the 10 mins. The color of modern oils doesn't say much about the life thats left in the oil.

If you want to do a real flush. You would drain the oil, and replace it and the filter with a cheap alternative for just flushing . Add the additive to the cheap flush oil and new cheap filter. Let the vehicle run four about an hour or at least 30 minutes( I do an hour) when normal operating temp is achieved. This is really important. It really makes a big difference to run the flush mix hot. I know the instructions say 15 minutes but you NEED the heat to really make a big difference. It really helps the engine flush components do their jobs. After running just drain as normal and replace with a proper filter and good oil.

I´m here to disappoint you, you can flush all you want. But the oil starts to get black very fast, it is meant to get black. This is carbondeposits(from combustionprocess) that the oil has cleaned out and is kept in the oil due to the filter can´t filter all carbon out. So if you need to have nice amber oil in your engines - do not start them after oilchange....... Ps, and to get a REAL flush, you need to run it WAY longer than 10minutes. Do this instead: Take the same grade oil but for an dieselengine AND that flush fluid(dieseloil has more detergents) and take a trip, say 100-200km. Change once again to the same diesel oil, run it for about 10--20minutes, And THEN you change to the correct oil. Make sure you change oilfilter every time also.

I believe your N52 has a pickup tube under the oil cap, this is for a vacuum extractor. I would pull the plug for the flush, but after that final fill I'd use the vacuum extractor for oil changes. I'm an AUDI guy, the crush washer is a single use item ... I have a bunch in a drawer, but I'd rather not mess with the drain plug if I don't have to and AUDI themselves use vacuum for regular changes.

Cool video kuya, didn’t know oil filter is on top. Im planning to do my first oil change on my 2024 cx5, im planning to put my magnetic oil drain plug and put some magnets around my oil filter and oil pan hehe what do you think about this?
@_J.P._
@_J.P._ 28 күн бұрын
About the oil color: Unfortunately it does not tell much. First because oil will change to dark once heat is introduced to thin layers of oil. Then it burns like a small thin layer of butter in your pan. This is the main reason why even freshly changed oil gets dark soon. The oil in the oil pan and other places where the stream has some volume will only carry the introduced heat. Like if you put a whole block of butter in a pan. Nothing happens to the butter. It will slowly melt but not burn since the butter has enough volume to accept the heat and transfer it to its remaining "body" parts. A thin layer does not have that option. And the same happens with the oil. Plus there are old deposits you can't flush 100% and they will dillute your new oil too. So if you want an exact result about each bottle with oil you would have to send them all to a laboratory for close inspection. All you can tell using all your senses is the smell, viscosity and other small things that actually can (!!) give you an insight about the condition of your oil but not precise enough to make deep thoughts about it :) no hate, just saying how it is. The best solution is to change your oil more often and you don't need any special bottles like that. They may help when you are running into troubles or bought a car with little to no service history but other than that they do nothing if your engine and its oil is in good working condition. However if you have a high mileage car with neglected service then this magic potion can actually remove and unleash nasty deposits that will then circulate in the system and cause more damage actually. But it is again not a fault of the product but a result of bad/no maintenance and usually a complete engine overhaul is inevitable. It would have been anyways but now it will be on the "soon to do" list. No hate, just sharing my 5 cents that I learned over the past XX years :)

I would think that instead of just letting idle. I would do these things in this order :1. Drive the car up to temp, 2. Flush and idle for 10 min. 3. Drain and fill with cheap oil and new filter. Drive medium hard on it for a few miles or days. drain. 4. new good oil and filter

The engine flush needs to run idling only for 10 min inside the engine when mixed with old oil, Leaving it inside and driving the car can damage the engine. Do the proper way and just follow the instruction on the can. Do a 2nd oil flush to flush out all contaminants, Then put in the proper oil that you want. Yes, The 3rd bottle came from the engine after 10min of idling as well. More DIY & Mods coming soon, Please LIKE & SUBSCRIBE and Thanks for watching!!!👍

This was a useful and interesting video, although I would never use something as costly as full synthetic Castrol edge as a flushing oil. If I was doing that double change I would use a straight 10W40 cheap mineral oil and change the filter too or it becomes pointless. The old filter will immediately contaminate the new oil if colour is your cleanliness benchmark. An engine may not be under as much load while idling as it is driving, but the bearing interface pressures will be almost the same, the moment the engine is running, so on every firing stroke con-rod bearnings, camshaft followers, camshaft bearings will be under very similar pressure to what they experience when it runs. The crankshaft will not be subjected to the same load. I suspect the reason they dont recommend driving the vehicle with flush in it is under bonnet engine temperatures under driving loads, that are likely to exceed even a 10 minute idling temp. The oil colour is not really a good indicator of clean or dirty oil. Modern oils all have detergents in them, and chemicals added to the additive package to trap soot and hold it in suspension. If the engine has EGR, or feeds any exhaust into the crankcase to hold soot in suspension then black oil just means the oil is doing its job. It can also get this from the cylinder walls during normal combustion. On a diesel engine new engine oil of any quality turns dark even after a short drive, and that's normal. Petrol engines will generally show clean oil for much longer, but over time they will also darken, especially if they are fitted with emission reductions systems. I remain a bit wary about using flush in turbocharged intercooled diesel engines because of the compression pressures and turbo temperatures. My V6 uses 10L of oil per change, so a second flush is costly. It has covered 294,000kms and I have only used flush once.

It is much better to change oil 10000 Kilometer BEFORE the manufacturer says, e.g. I drive Alfa Romeo where the oil interval is stated at 30000 Kilometer, but I drove 280000 with a 159 16-valve Diesel and changed oil every 20000 kilometer. Now with a MiTo Veloce I do not do these kilometers anymore, max 7000 per year but I still change oil every year and now that the car is 7 years old, this week it will get the Liqui Moly engine flush although my engine oil is alwys golden brown ( reminds me of a song😀) This BMW oil probably has not been changed at the correct interval but way way over it even my Alfa Diesels oils were not that black

You'll never get out all the old oil. Some stays trapped in the oil to air cooler at the front of the engine and in so other places. That's why these factory 15k mile oil changes ruin these engines shortly after the warranty period. 3-5k oil changes or every 6 months which every comes first.

I want to do this for my Lexus IS250. It’s an older car a 2008 model so I figure this would be a good thing to do right about now at 140k miles. My only worry is that doing this can compromise the seals and potentially cause an oil leak? I guess that’s why you only run this in your system for 15 minutes when someone does this procedure. Anyhow I might do this, maybe it will improve engine oil consumption issues if there are any. Performance of the car might improve as well.

I wonder how much oil this vehicle holds during a change. It depends on the motor's design and where the oil rests. My Honda drains 3.5 quarts, but if you raise the front end up on ramps, you can get about a full extra quart out of it. It really surprised me the first time. I wonder if that is why the oil is so dark after the flush, it may have held onto 1-1.5 quarts. The BMW is a beautiful car

I own a 2013 BMW 740li with 170k miles and a 2012 BMW X5 with 180k miles both equipped with the same inline 6 N55 engine and NEITHER burns a drop of oil. The V8 engines are known for this not the 6 cylinders. In any case 90% of the time oil burning is due to neglected oil maintenance.

BMW also have this 30000 km oil change interval, which is crazy, no oil can last that long, no wonder they burn oil...

No need to use expensive oil for the 2nd flush any oil the right spec will do , then put the oil you want to run longer term in for the final fill.

Mann is OEM and stamped Germany. Nothing is good enough, ever. I suggest 2 oil filters (they'll fit), custom viton cap o ring and at least 10 oil changes back to back. That's a bare minimum. I usually ain't happy until I spend 1 to 2k USD for my oil changes.

What's the mileage of the car? When was the last change? After the first oil change is too black. Unacceptable
@MackhackCA
@MackhackCA 7 ай бұрын
All additives and cleaners regardless of manufacturer are snake oil. Do a regular oil change every 10k km, don’t do extended oil changes, do a transmission flush every 60k km and your endings and transmission will outlast the car itself.

This is partially untrue, ive used fuel injector cleaner because my engine (N55) had a strong hesitation under boost due to dirty fuel injectors. Instead of replacing the injectors i decided to run 3 tanks of injector cleaner (BG44k in my case) and this cleaned my injectors to the point that the hesitation was COMPLETELY GONE. Still cant compare to new injectors but did a good enough job that these 3 bottles totaling under $100 saved me from a $1200 fuel injector job.

Mistake: Never put the cleaning flush concentrate direct on top of the engine. Mix it with oil first or with a strow down in the oil pan. Buy cheapest oil, add the flush and use this for the inside cleaning. Then replace with full synthetic. Greetings from Germany

There is a way to clean the engine with diesel by draining the oil, then putting in a quantity of diesel and draining it without running the engine, then putting in half diesel and half engine oil and letting the engine run for a minute and draining it, then putting in diesel and draining it without running the engine until the liquid is transparent, then putting in new oil and a filter. This is copied from Experiments

You said that the oil filter housing torque is 25Nm (which is correct), but you had probably overtightened it with the rachet.
@edcardiy
@edcardiy 5 ай бұрын
Yes I did use the rachet instead of the torque wrench, Because I know that there is a marker on the filter cover and the housing, Once they are lined up that is the torque 25nm (it's one of my DIY tip). More DIY & Mods coming soon, Please LIKE & SUBSCRIBE and Thanks for watching!!!👍

@@edcardiy Have you tried it with torque wrench as well? Your hand seems to be much stronger what 25Nm requires. Just asking.
@edcardiy
@edcardiy 5 ай бұрын
Yes I did use a torque wrench long time ago on my very very 1st oil change, But when I found out about the markers on the cover & housing I stop torqueing it because it always ends up that the markers where aligned. So when I tightened it and markers aligned that's it. Thanks for the question.

First off all, when you make this on a car whithout history, you should repeat the process until you obtain a clear oil. And every time you should change the oil filter too. After that, at every third oil change...
@gilgonzalez5902
@gilgonzalez5902 7 ай бұрын
This is excessive. Once the oil is clean all you need is 5k oil change intervals and it will STAY clean, the reason deposits and sludge build up in the first place is because of neglected oil changes.

Don’t forget to make sure there’s enough room for the flush because you don’t want to mess up your rear main seal with overfilled oil. I know it’s just idle but still better safe than sorry. Now I change my oil every 2,000 miles so if you go longer like 5,000 miles then your engine should have lost a little oil from normal combustion and whatnot so it might not be full.

The flush is just about bigger than a can of soda. At an oil change there is no way that would overfill the oil. You are just being over the top like with 2k oil changes. Are you driving a rolls Royce or a standard car. It’s so over the top all of this. Once the car gets that old all the money saved on all them oil changes could go to getting a new car when it goes bang at 150k anyway.
@ned1621

Man changing oil every 2000 miles is ridiculous. There's no need, you must be changing it 3 times a year. 5000 is more than good. Manufacturers recommend 7500 and more or a year... Wasting your money...
