Are precious metal mines bad for the environment? A proposed mine in the Boundary Waters worries environmentalists. On the other end, many consider the Twin Metals mine as an economic necessity. The question is, can it be done safely? In this episode we have exclusive conversations with Twin Metals representatives and industry leaders in Ely, MN. Underground stope and paste fill with tailing plus de-acidifying additives. Haul/convey back to an iron range site to minimise footprint of infrastructure and residual tailings dam/waste pile. Might cost out some low grade blocks but at least you get half the baby. 🤷‍♂️

@@2036scott Had a look at their Mine Ops Plan and I’m not even sure there would be any profits left. Jeez the grade at 0.69% Cu and about 1.2% Cu equivalent all up looks skinny for an underground mine.

I feel the best way to do this would to do a formal risk assessment and then see what can be mitigated/monitored and see what can't. Move away from subject emotional discussion on jobs and the environment and make a proper engineering assessment of the risk then decide whether it is a good decision or not.

Absolutely bewildered this channel hasn't exploded, outside of a few videos (discovered yall from the point Roberts episode). The reporting, inclusion of community perspective, and visual storytelling, particularly with the maps and footage are incredible. Exactly the kind of style I enjoy watching, and hope to emulate myself. Excited to see what's next

This is excellent reporting. I hope I can go back to Ely and I hope there is a way the town and surrounding area can come to some sort of agreement. I really see how the metals are needed strategically, economically, and industrially, but I hope when I go back to the boundary waters, they'll still be as amazing as I remember them. I can't imagine how much more difficult this is for the people there.

@@OfftheCuff_Series I have only watched two videos so far, this one and the one about Point Roberts, I definitely loved the one on point roberts. I have an idea but not too sure how it would pan out, it is similar to this one. it would be over the health of the Great Lakes, specifically Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes are going through some severe ecological issues from pollution, invasive species, and algal blooms. Personally, I am from a small town in Northwest Indiana and i’ve grown up near the great lakes all my life. Northwest Indiana is home to a huge amount of steel plants, oil refineries, and coal plants that dump copious amounts of nasty water into the Lake Michigan that has hazardous impacts on the ecology and even tourism in the region. It is really sad to see the health of the great lakes deteriorate over time. if that sounds like a good idea i’d love to watch an episode on it, if not I’m glad that you asked. I hope to see this page grow more and more!

Being in Nickel Capital of the world in Canada, I can relate. Mining copper and nickel in that area since the 1800's had taken a toll on the environment . The upside is that technology has improved quite a good bit since they've started, and the mining companies had launched massive regreening efforts, and what was once bare with no trees is full of lush greenery.

As someone who was a guide out of Moose lake for 2 summers, and that tries to go back every year, I'm very protective of the BWCA. However, I also understand that we need these minerals to keep our society running. If they can show us that they have at least redundant protective measures for the mining waste, I might consider supporting the mine. However, it seems like every year that you hear about some new mining contamination somewhere. Also, they say they'll bring in all of these jobs. However, when Trump lifted the restrictions on coal mining many miners didn't get their jobs back because the mining company decided to increase automation. So I question the number of long term jobs that will actually be created.

Well presented... thanks... the fatalistic response of the mayor says it all... those who want it will come and get it... sad indictment of the human condition where greed will prevail. Ideally humans should change their desires to a sustainable future. Mining is not a sustainable form of exploitation whereas eco-tourism is, as long as there is an eco to tour.

@@rob379lqz actually no we won't, we will find other ways to make money and survive. We can leave it alone and not go extinct. And if everyone moves out of Ely and it becomes a ghost town it's a small price to pay to protect the BWCA. I mine coming or going isn't going to kill anyone. But it could kill the BWCA, a place that should remain how it is for many years after we are dead and gone. Having to find other ways to be innovative isn't a death sentence.
