I agree with the horsepower comments. So many channels are hyping the 392 as an insane hot rod. It’s not at all. It performs like a properly married platform that has the right power when you need it but drives like a quality SUV when you don’t. My JK was always gasping for more power and downshifting on every overpass even with a supercharger. My 392 drives like it should on the highway and is what you’d expect on the trails. Great vid! Thanks for sharing.

Bear, liked & subbed. Glad ! tuned in on YT's suggestion. Your experience convinced me to forget about getting a 2022 Xtreme Recon. I live in canada, Yesterday, April 6th, I went to 2 jeep dealers. The 1st dealer rep said to expect a minimum 6 month wait before delivery. The 2nd said probably a year. Both quoted around 140 G's canadian, with all the options I wanted, sky roof, and numerous other bells 'n whistles. Your dealer did right by you, regarding the engine failure but it would bother me more than it did you. Yeah, this video was the last hammer blow to the coffin to me getting a 392. Dead & buried. I'll supercharge, lift and beef up my 2016 manual Hard Rock and I'll be good. Thanks for posting, much appreciated.

Very nice video sir. I just received my 2022 , 392 last Friday. Traded in my 2017, 2 dr Jeep Rubicon JK.which I loved. Lol I was undecided between 35” or 37” tires, but after seeing your BFG 35”s. That’s the way I am going. I have had Jeeps for last 10 plus years , and hoping this new 392, will stay with me for another 10 plus.

Great review, Sir! Just purchased my 2022 XR in Sting-Gray after trading the identical 2020 vehicle with the 3.6L. You hit the nail on the head about the struggle is real on 35s and trying to pass someone on the freeway in anything other than a 392. I feel the 392 is what should have come in the JL as a standard option with bigger Hemi engines as upgrades.

I have the exact same Jeep including year and color. I love it. So far no problems with 30k on it. Drove from Minnesota to Moab twice and wheeled it. Took it to Silver lake sand dunes, been in mud, snow, rocks, mountain, deserts and it never skips a beat. My inner wheel fenders melted on our first trip so I put the AAL ones. I've always had 35's on it with a tazer mini. Planning on chrome moly axles soon. The engine and transfer case are my only worries so I got an extended warranty and service all the fluid often. Too bad they didn't put the new full float rear axle in the 21 but it is what it is.

Great review! I'd buy you a beer for the review of the mechanical aspects of the 392 that are missing in other reviews. Your experience in auto mechanics was evident and useful in understanding the 392 from standard JLUs as well as the warranty issue. I noticed your tires are wider than the fenders as you swapped the 33s for 35s. Is it possible to put on the XR fender extensions to keep road debris from chipping your rear fenders? I agree with your comment that the "jeep thing" like scratches can be a bummer. Keep the content coming! Cheers!

I ordered my first Jeep ever at the end of November 2020. I ordered a 2021 JL Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. The one that I ordered has the 3.6 liter V-6 w/ eTorque and 8 speed automatic transmission. About 2 or 3 weeks later, after I ordered my Jeep, the 392’s were announced followed a few months later with the Extreme Recon package. Had I known about those 2 things I would have then waited a few more months to order mine. But I do love everything about my Jeep except for the eTorque. I absolutely hate the eTorque! But oh well. My Jeep is the most capable stock 4x4 vehicle that I have ever owned. I have been around off roading my entire life but have always had either full size trucks or Toyota Tacomas. My Tacomas always did great but my current Jeep does so much more, and by a long shot too!

Thanks for highlighting the unique features of the 392 JLUR over the 3.6L JLUR. I especially appreciate your honest debunking of the rumors about power and ride. The 4 door jeep wrangler has needed a V8. I also agree its the ideal engine for a daily driver/weekend wheeler jeep. We love the 5.7L Hemi in my wife's WK2 TrailHawk. I can't wait to either swap a 392 into my 3.6 JLUR or trade it for a factory built 392.

Watching the video and noticed you talking about the gauge cluster (or lack thereof). On your radio you can go into apps and there will be a off-road pages. In there you can pull up all of those gauges so you can see real time temps
@ThunderBear4WD

Thanks for mentioning that. I was aware of the off-road pages. I think I wanted to point out the difference in the lack of permanent analog gauges. I know it's not a full size pickup, I just think the vehicle's basic utility warrants having those gauges in the cluster. That's just my preference. The fact that the gauges can be seen in the off-road pages is certainly a bonus.

I ran 37” km3 on my stock rubicon JT, and it never rubbed. Full turns, no rubbing. I’m sure fully flexed it’ll rub up top, but driving around town and full turns, it rides perfectly fine. In fact, the wider bigger tires on the lower vehicle height/ center of gravity, felt great! My JTR is now lifted 3” on the same wheels and tires, and even though it rides good, I feel like it was a bit better handling when it was at stock rubi height.

Very nice Jeep and video. I wish my Gladiator Rubicon had a V8, even a 5.7 would have been nice. The 2019 Ram 1500 that I traded for a 2021 Wrangler Unlimited 4xe had the 5.7 and the sound was sweet. My 4xe sure doesn't rumble but it goes like hell when you punch it. It doesn't have the instant torque of a traditional powertrain. It has a slight lag when running on electric and then the gas engine fires up and then it starts really pullling. I would certain like a 392 Wrangler, but they way I drive, I would get 14-15mpg if I am lucky. The 4xe's computer says I get 30-33 depending on how I am driving. When the battery for the electric motors crap out, it will get about 20mpg on the highway at speeds averaging 80mph. I haven't needed any warranty related issues on either Jeeps but if either becomes a lemon, I would trade or sell off them for another Jeep. I have owned 5 Jeeps out of 20+ different vehicles. I will probably always own a Jeep. It's a JEEP THING!! Lol!

This was an awesome review buddy, I just received my 392 took four months to get here and oh my God it is the best vehicle I’ve ever owned, I’ve owned seven jeeps in this one by far is the best, it handles great it rides great I’m used to running big lift kits 39 inch tires and I don’t want to mess this thing up I’d like to put 30 seconds on it and keep the stock wheels if possible it’s so nice not sure which way to go yet? I like that bass bar you have on your bumper, who makes it? And what size is it or is low there’s medium there’s high etc. i’m sorry about what happened to your engine that’s terrible that must’ve been really stressful spent all that money and that happened but now it’s fixed and still under warranty and you should be good to go, keep us updated to next. 👍🇺🇸👌

The unlimited Rubicon is about 116.499 Dollar over here so the 392 would only be for the "elite". Taxes in the Netherlands are just plain criminal. That's why I stick to my old trustworthy 4.0 TJ. I honestly think it was rare and fluke thing to have happen. I would not think that it's a common thing. There are far too many Gen III Hemi's out there for this to be regular failure. I am aware that some Gen III's eat camshafts at around 100K miles, but most of those are vehicles that idle excessively, and it's a different kind of failure than what I had happen. The ones that eat the cam, the roller end of the lifter fails, the needle bearings in the roller tip fail causing the roller to skid on the camshaft. MOAPR addressed this and started putting larger needle bearings in their roller lifters. With mine, the hydraulic side of the lifter failed, the pushrod pocket pushed in and did not come back up. That's why they call it a collapsed lifter. This type of failure is not unique to MOPAR, any hydraulic lifter can have this type of failure. Whether its a flat tappet or a roller lifter.

@ThunderBear4WD
@ThunderBear4WD Жыл бұрын
Eventually, likely yes, but maybe not, depends... The first run 392's came with 3.73's. To be honest, the 392 doesn't really care about the 35's, it still pulls hard. That being said, the Xtreme Recons come with essentially 35's and 4.56's. The next set of tires I was looking to get are going to be 37's, so I think at that point, I'd want some more bottom end added back in. So, a new set of gears would make sense. But my plans could change in a big way if I can get my hands on these... 74 Weld Ultimate Jeep Portals motorsports.74weld.com/jeepportal/?fbclid=IwAR3KESss4gM6BwuuBgYKWp4xLEjkRMfbGO-UDO_ntgosFR7hFeu16HuGwCE The portals have their own gear reduction, and the additional height allows me to jump up to 39's. The reduction is 1.22, multiply that by the 3.73's and that gets me to 4.55. It's a complete bolt on system that reduces 20% of the stress off of the factory axles, gets me 3.88" of lift on 8-on-6.5" wheels. With the addition of a PSC cylinder assist kit, life gets even better. www.pscmotorsports.com/all-products/cylinder-assist-steering-kits/jeep/2018-2020-jl/cylinder-assisttm-steering-kits/392/oem-rubicon-d30-d44/aftermarket-tie-rod-select-size/2-0-od-tie-rod-clamp Lots of decisions to make still, but what awesome choices to pick from...

After warranty turn it off or delete it and it will run forever. Gas mileage won’t be as good but I prefer reliability over gas mileage. 392 with the 8 speed is awesome. If you noticed, when I turned off the performance exhaust it got quieter, then louder when I turned it back on. My Rebel has a 5.7 and does the same thing cold, its just more pronounced with the 392 because you can change the exhaust outlet. I think its the sound of the exhaust valves closing against the head until they warm up. I guess you could say, its a Hemi thing. I can't lie, it did feel a little like I was reaching for "cons". I took the path of, there's always room for improvement, so mention it and move on. I guess that goes to the point that it's an awesome vehicle. As there's always room for improvement, the fenders and inner fenders are totally on many people's list of things to modify/upgrade/replace. We jokingly say that Jeeps are Barbies for men. You can accessorize anything you want and there are more aftermarket parts for Jeeps than any other vehicles on the planet. Which goes to your point, they are a canvas. The lifter thing could have turned out way worse, but the warranty covered that. So other than being without my Jeep for a few weeks, that was the worst of the impact there. Not entirely sure a 6 spd would live a long and healthy life behind the 392. It would be interesting to see one and how it would hold up. With as much time as we hope to spend in the mountains this coming year, an automatic will make wheeling easier on the steeper inclines.

Yes, it's essentially the same SRT 392 they all get. Has a cold air intake. That's the reason for the Hydro Guide hood, so it doesn't swallow a bow wake when you cross water. I think the exhaust is what drops the HP down a little. Has cast exhaust manifolds.

Is there anything to worry about when putting 35’s and new wheels
@ThunderBear4WD
@ThunderBear4WD 2 жыл бұрын
One of the things I always take into consideration when changing to a wider tire, is the wheel's back spacing. I believe the factory 392 wheels have roughly 5.5" back spacing. The Hutchison Rock Monster wheels have 4.5" of back spacing. What that means is the inner sidewall of the tire is closer to the frame with the factory wheels. Moving the tire outboard an inch helps insure there is no contact of the inner sidewall. I also think it gives it a more aggressive wider stance. The overall wider stance also helps the vehicles stability. Also, with any late model vehicle, when changing tire size you need a way to update the onboard computer to the new tire size. I have a Z Automotive - Tazer JL Mini, and used it to change the tire size. The Tazer JL Mini is capable of making dozens of changes. Here is an affiliate link: amzn.to/3qYPIU4

The inner fender liner I have seen other 392s have that same issue. People aren’t sure if it was how hot the engine bay gets. Or how much extra air comes into the engine as they designed it that way. Not sure why Jeep still uses such cheap fender linings. Could easily manufacture an aluminum liner.

I had to literally cut the bracket down the middle and add some 3" flat bar to reconnect it. I heavily modified mine to fit the 392. It has been known to work. The towing capacity is dictated more by the overall size of the vehicle, than anything else. The 392 would totally pull the weight. The JL would have a difficult time controlling all of mass behind it. Having a soft off road suspension package on axles that are more narrow than a pickup causes problems. I know they JT Gladiators have a higher tow rating, but I wouldn't necessarily trust it they way I would a full size pickup.

Question : do you find the steering to be “floaty” or vague when going straight? I’ve driven a few JLs and they all have a dead spot when driving straight. Constant correction of the steering is required to maintain a straight line. I just test drive a “High Tide” edition (basically a 35” recon) and it did the same thing. I’m hoping the 392’s steering would be better.
@ThunderBear4WD
@ThunderBear4WD Жыл бұрын
Want you to know I've been thinking about this since you posted your question. I felt I had to answer in the most honest way possible. But also in a way that quantifies my response. So let me preface my response as someone who was raised around older straight axle 4WD pickups and sport utilities (Blazers, Jeeps, Ramchargers, Scouts, Broncos). Most all of those vehicles were built around leaf spring suspensions, except the Broncos which had coils up front. Then when the TJ's hit, they also had coils. I would say that most people would consider all of those to have less than optimal suspensions that wandered all over the road and did a pretty solid job of pounding your kidneys out. That being the case, I had never known anything different in the realm of pickups or sport utes. So in the context of how I perceive the handling of the 392, is likely far different and less finicky than other drivers may be. The first time I drove my 2dr JK I was floored at how good it drove. How responsive it felt. How tight and clean it handled. I had that Jeep for 9 years. I traded that for my Ram Rebel. The Rebel had IFS with full adjustable air suspension. It felt like a Cadillac, I could barely feel the road. Then I got my 392... So, my 392 was not an Extreme Recon. The package did not exist when I ordered my Jeep. Mine came with 33's. I was blown away at how it handled. I thought it was far superior to my 2rd JK. The extra length in wheel base certainly helped. I felt like I could thread needles with her. I had never driven a Jeep that felt so responsive, so smooth, so well mannered on the road. Now, you have to keep in mind that I was raised driving leaf spring trucks, so by comparison to that, it felt to me like I was driving a sports car. I have since put 35's on the 392 with Hutchison bead lock wheels. I use Magnum balance beads. It may have occasion to hit tripple digit speeds and to me it still feels amazing and easy to drive. I never feel frightened, I always feel safe. But the simple truth is, it's still a straight axle vehicle with 35 x 12.5 tires on 17" wheels. There is still 9" of sidewall between the rim and the outer edge of the tire. Those factors mean its going to wonder in ruts and not give the same amount of feedback to the driver, than say, even a minivan with 4" of sidewall and 9.5" tire width. So, does it get "floaty", I would have to say yes. But to me, the design of the suspension makes up for the deficiencies the tires and the straight bring into the equation. By no means is it a sports car. Compared to other sport utes with IFS, it's probably not as secure a feel as what most people are accustom. It drives as good as it can for all the things that are working against it. I'm totally okay with that. All I can say, it's a Jeep thing...

@@ThunderBear4WD first, thank you for such a thorough response. I completely agree how different drivers will describe their experience. My daily driver is a 2006 Charger Hemi w/Police package. Currently at 155k miles, and although the steering has loosened up over the years, it still reacts like it’s on rails. The solid front axle of the Jeep makes for an extremely capable off roader, but leaves it lacking on the road when compared to an IFS. With a 392 Wrangler, the smiles per gallon will definitely over come the little extra effort required to maintain a straight line. Thanks again for your thoughts. Enjoy that 392!

Does the 392 have problems with the MDS like the 5.7 Hemi did ?
@ThunderBear4WD

problems as in what exactly? There are many different kinds of complaints with MDS. Most of which are things that it just does that people don't like, for instance the droning sound that some people complain about. I don't notice a droning sound that feels unpleasant, but I can tell when the MDS kicks in and its running on 4 cylinders. It drops out of it very quickly as soon as I bump the throttle. Even when the lifter thing happened, it never had a loss of power and it didn't' scatter itself. original block, heads, cam even. They replaced the offending lifters and put it back together. There was never a statement given that indicated that MDS caused the lifter failure. I think the lifters had an infant mortality event and it was an isolated issue. She runs great. I hit the long skinny pedal and she get to 99 MPH in a right quick hurry.
