There's a lot of confusion about protein, especially plant based sources. In this video I answer some of the most commonly asked questions and take a closer look at where I get my protein.
How much protein do we need? How much do I get? How much to build muscle? Is plant protein complete? Do I need to pair amino acids?
I answer all these questions and more. If you have any questions I didn't answer or think I got something wrong, let me know in the comments down below.

Your videos are really inspiring. After getting a laser eye surgery (-7.5 & -9 diopter) and getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed, shortly before hitting the age of 30, I decided to eat more healthy, unprocessed foods and start working out (only calisthenics so far). I work from 9:30 to 19:30 for 5 days a week, it takes me about an hour to get there and another hour to get home. I already took in alot of your recipes, and after years of mainly eating dairy snacks like chocolate bars, drinking way too much sugary sodas, and just eating junk, it feels really good to do something that benefits me. I've always been underweight in my life (about 55kg with an height of 1,72m), and I start to see some gains for the first time in my life. After 3 weeks of my new lifestyle I can already feel the positive vibes that are coming from it, and people around me are telling me that they can sense my new awareness. You're an awesome person, and your positive vibes are really something that everybody should take in! Keep doing your stuff, it works magic for some of us! All the best to you and your beloved ones!

I went Vegan after seeing Game Changers... I also asked: "'Where am I am gonna get my protein from! I might have to drink a ton of shakes and I might have to occasionally eat eggs or fish'' AHAHAHA I soon learned about Lentils (my new favourite food in the whole world), spilt-peas, Tofu, Soybeans (in general), black beans, chickpeas... Not only do these taste amazing, but they are also a 10th of the price of meat. Instead of just meat and rice, my plate now looks like a rainbow. My health improved (Sinus issues disappeared) and its like food tastes different, better and new. For those worried about getting enough protein; with all the abovementioned sources, I struggle to not overconsume protein. I easily get 160 grams a day. EASY!!!

Great video! I personally think it’s interesting how protein became such a big trend and I myself even fell into the “brotein” trap. The times where I was making the most muscle gains I wasn’t even focused on protein which makes sense looking at it now. High carbs really work well for building muscle and a whole food plant based diet has that easily! I’m thinking about eating just like you Derek for a week and seeing how it goes. I eat mostly plant based but I want to go totally Whole Food plant based for a week just to see how it is. It just looks so clean and refreshing to be eating Whole Foods with all of those colorful varieties!

Hi Derek, love your videos. One source you didn't mention is seitan. I know some people are sensitive to wheat, but this vegan source of protein packs 24.5 grams of protein in a 100 gram serving with only 8 grams of carbs and .7 grams of fat. So it is incredibly high in protein while being low in carbs and fat. Super chewy and meat like, for those new vegans who are missing their meat.

A given plant doesn't have all 9 amino acids in appreciable quantities, but a variety of them would.
@cutabove9046
@cutabove9046 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, plants have all 9 essential amino acids, but no they don't ALL line up to make a "complete" protein. Put you daily intake of food into an app like the Cron-o-meter and find out for yourself. The typical vegan whole food meal plan containing 2,500 calories might have 65 gram of protein which is more than you would need and would normally handle 100% of your daily proteins needs if it was animal based. However, if you review what that 65 grams of protein looks like from an amino acid profile you'd be lucky to get 40% of RDA of the "limiting amino acids" like lysine or leucine. Using some math we find the "effective useable" protein turns out to be 65 grams time 40 percent equal 26 grams of usable protein. The balance of those extra nonessential amino acids will be used as fuel instead of tissue repair and muscle building. How vegan athletes get around this is they use vegan protein powder that has been specially formulated with extra essential amino acids to balance out the protein and mimic a meat amino acid profile.
@Gabeee
@Gabeee Жыл бұрын
@@cutabove9046 That's interesting. 150g of tofu alone gives you 40% according to crono. I've added 300g of cooked jasmin rice, 50g of peanuts and 150g of whole wheat bread (these overall tend to be my main protein sources as a fairly underweight person) and this provides 57.7g of protein and 86% of lysine, the rest of the amino acids are over 100% but most over 120-130%. As for calories so far 1300. Add some oil/vegan butter, some vegetables, some snacks and it still should be around or less than 2000 while also increasing the protein with 2-3g. If I wanted to focus even more on protein then I could add a bit more tofu, a bit more legumes or even some protein powder which are used by non-vegan athletes as well. I might've misunderstood something from your comment as I'm not sure about this "effective usable" part.
@thewellfoodie
@thewellfoodie Жыл бұрын
@@toocheaptobuycolognes3681 They all do. Look it up. Every plant has all essential and non essential. Protein actually comes from plants. When I figured that out it blew my mind. Like I'd never though of it like that, but animals are the ones that cannot make essential aminos, not plants 🫠
@thewellfoodie
@thewellfoodie Жыл бұрын
@@cutabove9046 It's a good thing that we are not all athletes and therefore do not have that extra demand for protein. Protein powders are used by non vegan athletes as well that want the extra protein without the high fat content of bulking up with animal based protein. They almost all supplement because they push themselves to the limits of human abilities unlike the average Joe 😊

I have been wanting to change my nutrition for a while now but didnt know where to start. As i researched, I ran across your page and was instantly hooked, not only for your great attitude but for the masive information you provide with every video. I now have been following you for a couple months. I have decided to go plant base, not 100% yet (more like 80%) as it is a transition im working on. Its been a month and feel good about this decision. I have a better understanding by watching your videos on top of following your nutrition e-book. Thank you!

Thank you Derek, your videos are always so helpful. I actually found your channel 2 years ago through another video you made about protein. 2 years ago I’d just gone vegan for the animals 💚 but was a bit worried about the nutrition side of things because culturally we have this weird idea that a vegan diet is unhealthy when in fact the opposite is true.

Cooking time really can vary with the bean. Dried soy beans are the toughest. Soaking (3:1 water:beans volume) is best (also for the taste buds), usually cold overnight (8-10h) or brought to boil and let rest (4h). The older the beans, the longer this takes. Drain the water and then cook slowly for another 1-2h. Quick and 'dirty' is the instapot/pressure cooker. Pressure soak for 5min in the pot and let the pressure drop to normal. Drain the water and another 20-30 mins to cook. You can also skip the soaking and just keep it in with plenty of water for 45min to 1h. The downside is that quite a bit of phytate is still in there, they don't become very tasty and it's not faster than with pressure soaking. My solution: soak cold and cook however you prefer in big batches and freeze them. The quickest of all is opening a can of beans, rinsing them, done.

Probably because you can eat more volume/calorie per serving. TLDR: less water + fiber. The processing washes away some of the fiber and dries out almost all the water.

@@tomk.8146 In my real world, I am surrounded by meat eaters (I have no vegetarian or vegan friends or relatives), and I don't preach them at all, but many people who hear I don't eat meat, they start saying, I must be lacking this or that. Many times iron... I have never had problems with iron. This fall a lady was trying to convince me I was lacking iron and I should eat meat (she said I was pale)... well, it was a coincidence, but that week I had my blood results and I had no iron problem at all (or anything else). So you are dead wrong, I have been vegetarian since I was very little, and all I got was criticism and people trying to convince me to eat meat. My experience is meat eaters are preachy.

@@perlaserrano1791 In "your" real world? There is only one real world. And I described what I have experienced not you and everyone else. Vegans call me immoral because animals die when I eat meat, although more animals die in maintain crops with insecticides etc. These vegans are tying to ruin my marriage and instill unrest between my wife and I. They insist that we must all be like them, even though no one can predict if 7 billion vegans would have enough supplements to stay healthy (without the supplements you will irreversibly destroy your health in less than 5 years). They cherry pick information to promote their agenda. They do not confront their world vegan problems like increasing environmental problems along with globalization when feeding people of the Arctic, or what will happen if corrupt governments start withholding B12 or other necessary supplements - this has precedence. They claim we evolved not to eat meat but, again, cherry pick information. They refuse to explain why we have gallbladders, an organ for meat eaters only, or why we are entcephalized - a phenomenon of carnivores. I'm considering becoming a full carnivore because of the outrageous arrogance of the vegans in my life.

@@charathcutestory check out nutritionfacts.org. our bodies make these 2 amino acids and humans would only need supplements in very dire situations when their body can't produce them. Thats why some amino acids are "essential" and some are not. The essential ones are the ones we need to intake by food which are found in every single plant food. Its not just Derek calling then non essential.... its what they are called in biology and science. Lol.
