In the late 70's, there was a novel called "The Front Runner," about a gay runner, and his coach, and the Montreal Olympics. The novel became a best seller, and there was talk of a film, and they wanted Redford as the runner, and Newman as the coach. I happened to write a theme for the movie I called "Frontrunner." Newman was afraid of public opinion, at the time, so the film was never made. It's now on KZfaq....just piano/vocal. Look for it by Gene Howard Klein, if interested.

In the mid-nineties my girlfriend worked for Redford in the offices of his "Constellation Pictures" offices as his personal secretary. I believe you got a couple things wrong. I have heard interviews with both actors over the years and I seem to remember Paul was originally hired to be Sundance. When Robert came into the picture it was decided it would be better for the roles to be reversed. Also, while McQueen and Newman were contemporaries they were not really friends. McQueen was the first choice for Butch Cassidy... but his demands became so petty and unreasonable that he was dropped. When they made the Towering Inferno together McQueen actually required he would have the exact same number of lines as Newman. Redford and Newman were so great together it is sad they could never find another project that they both liked.
@mikearchibald7442 жыл бұрын
I vaguely remember that, and then when they went to Newman about his billing on Inferno to see if he was going to make the same demands as McQueen I think I read he just said "I don't give a shit" or something like that.

They could both make a scene sizzle, that's for sure. Prior to "A Walk in the Woods," they could never find a script that either of them liked. I do believe "A Walk in the Woods" was definately a film they could've made into a huge hit. They thrived on conflict and humor as actors. Paul was too old by then.
