I did an ice chest challenge on whether to choose a Hard cooler or a Soft Cooler. It is tough to choose the right ice cooler for your lifestyle! I took a look at a Yeti 20, Tourit 20 cooler and Ice Mule soft cooler. Here is what I learned!
My Yeti

Word to the wise. Don't buy a cooler in any other color than white. If you're looking for ice retention in the sun you need a white cooler to reflect visible light so that it doesn't heat your cooler up. The only time I'd ever recommend such a bright colored cooler is if you're on a boat or in the woods where you may need a bright color to signal for and emergency.

I have a yeti 45 tundra that’s my go to cooler, you’ll always have a seat and a foot prop like you said. My wife has a medium insulated back pack and we use that when we wanna go drinking on the go... it’s pretty much like you said depends on what activity you’re using it for. We live in beach town u.s.a in Brownsville Texas. Sadly our beaches have been closed.

Hey man how's it going this was a great video man. I will have to say it depends on the situation what's going on. I like both coolers. Around the house or at a picnic or on a trip or out on the kayak or boat I say hard top cooler. But if I'm like on the bike I can see maybe on the kayak using the backpack cooler. They both are good coolers. The ice can melt but as long as it stays cold your baggage will stay cold. I go through this all the time with coolers. This was a good one.

Personally, I go with hard coolers. I got an RTIC soft cooler as a safety prize, and it’s nice. However, I really don’t like the zippers. Too much trouble to open and close. Hard coolers work fine without the buckles snapped, but soft coolers don’t work well unzipped.

My Coleman ends up (hopefully) with fish in it, so it doesn't need to hold ice for days, always been a non-issue for me. I don't want three day old fishy ice. Clean the fish, rinse the chest, fresh ice, fresh beer, fresh fish (hopefully) the next day, rinse, repeat. And like you said, I can sit on it to rest from all that (hopefully) catching fish!

Jack, since your roots are in kayak fishing you should do a insulated fish bag test. Times have changed and there are more options out there for fishing bags and new guys don't know what to grab or if you even need one. You probably still have that old brown one. Hobie/Reliable fishing, Feelfree fish bag, Viking fish bag, and even the small boat kill bags. Living here in the panhandle there are so many yakkers that I'm sure people would help get you test bags.

Loved my lo-boy styrofoam coolers, they lasted about 20 yrs and I promise they insulated as well as Yeti. . You could stand on either of them. Used my larger one to ship some fragile equipment on e-bay, and don't know what happened to the smaller one (probably blew away during high winds). Seems ridiculous to pay 200-300$ for a hard cooler, when you could buy a lo-boy for about 5$. However, a small weak grizzly bear could easily tear them apart.

But in the end I'm like you the yeti roadie seafoam was on sale at Atwood's and it can do all things deer camp, road trips, back of the truck for week's on end just topping off with ice every few days

For me the intended purpose determines the type of cooler. Weight is a big factor in my decision. If beach for a few hours then soft cooler is my choice. If fishing on beach for meat then I go with lightweight igloo playmate. For real fishermen perfectly ok to mix beverages with fish/bait. If on boat or have a 4 wheel cart then hard cooler is better although you may want both types. On cicadas. I call them “hot bugs” because they arrive and depart with hot days. They live in the trees. They are so loud I can hear them when I cut grass with using ear protection.
