The YETI Roadie 24 is the newest model of the popular Roadie and it comes in at a whopping $250 (as of 2022). We thought that seemed a bit expensive for a cooler so we put it head-to-head against the Everbilt 26 qt Rotomolded Cooler. Why the Everbilt? The Slickdeals community voted it to be the #1 cooler deal of the year when it was on sale for $40. No, this is not the cheapest cooler of all time, it is just the best deal (according to a community of 13 million deal experts). We put both these coolers to the test and evaluated their design & features, did a 24-hour ice test... and then dropped both of them off a table onto the concrete.
February 2023 Update: the Everbilt is out of stock so check out the below alternates.

The yeti did not outperform the cheaper cooler on the ice test. The everbilt cooler has more air space therefore requires more volume to fill the air space to maintain ice better.

One HUGE reason having the drain is better is sometimes you need to re-ice the cooler. With a drain you wouldn't need to tip the cooler over if it's full of food. Just drain and refill with ice.

At about 8 min the guy on right asked "what was the point of this test"? After watching, I am still wondering what was the point. Very ill conceived experiment. As pointed out by other commenters, it was not a fair comparison for a number of reasons, the main one being equal volumes of ice and significantly unequal cooler volumes, the shape of the cooler, and surface area of cooler. The comparison is meaningless.

I’ve used Yeti coolers for years. I bought them due to ice retention on hunting and fishing trips where we may not have easy access to ice. We have used them for casting platforms from the boat , seats, gun rests, dropped one out a truck going down the highway due to a tailgate latch failure. I’ve had the same one in the back of my truck for six years now. I would have had to replace a cheaper cooler several times. They are tough as hell.

We were trying not to be bias on the review but thanks for the feedback. Both Johan and Pete did prefer the Yeti design-wise but the Everbilt definitely had more features especially for the price. One thing we didn't cover is the fact that the Yeti looked worn much quicker with it's glossy finish then the matte(?) finish of the Everbilt. Both were scratched up but one would definitely see the cosmetic flaws first on at least this color of the Yeti.

@@slickdeals you both did a poor job of hiding the bias in the beginning. But at the end you both redeemed yourselves. I see too many of these reviews where the Yeti fanboys spend the whole review trying to justify the price. Both of you admitted that the Yeti wasn't a bargain. The major selling point for the Yeti is that it's supposed to keep ice for a week, which they do well. But realistically I have never needed to keep ice for a week. A 3 or 4 day camping trip is about the longest I have ever used a cooler.

If we only want 24 hours of cooling, a $24, 28-qt Igloo Laguna cooler from Walmart does the job just fine. I take it on my weekends and still usually have ice left after 36 hours or so. It sits on the passenger seat, so it's not exactly in the shade, but if it was to be in direct sun on a hot day then I'm sure there would be more of a difference between it and a cooler 10x the price.

of course the yeti didn't melt as fast it has less air inside. The taller design of the Yeti you have to dig deeper to find what you're looking for. the drain is a big plus so you do not have to tip over your ice chest to drain the water and re-adding ice. They didn't even mention the red button on the front which releases pressure or vacuum if you went from a high altitude to a lower altitude you would have a vacuum in your ice chest which you might not even be able to open if the seals are that good with the red button on the front you can relieve the pressure.

@@SchwinnXchange LOL Yeti Tundra coolers are not made in China. They are made in the USA or Philippines. If thats a selling point, you can call Yeti and let them know you want your cooler made in the USA. I go camping for weeks and leave the cooler in the sun. None of them warped. Lemons do happen. Especially when you sell more coolers than anyone else. The air valve is a gimmick. I have one in a nICE cooler it does nothing unless you take your cooler to the bottom of the ocean or Everest. Thats why you dont see them on high quality coolers (Yeti, Orca, Pelican) but you can believe the hype. I dont know of anyone that lost their plug lol.The roadie is made for a day trip. The height is so you can put wine bottles or tall drinks. The Roadie has built in handles so you can flip and empty. Like I said is made for a day trip. Oh and Pelicans, Yetis' Orcas, Rtics none of them are leak proof, not even the everbuilt. That's so you can put dry ice inside. At the time of my comment the Everbilt isn't currently on sale but we do see sales for coolers like it often - slickdeals.net/newsearch.php?q=cooler&pp=20&rating=3&filter%5B%5D=338&forumid%5B%5D=71&forumid%5B%5D=30&forumid%5B%5D=9&forumid%5B%5D=25&forumid%5B%5D=4&forumid%5B%5D=8&forumid%5B%5D=10&forumid%5B%5D=13&forumid%5B%5D=38&forumid%5B%5D=39&forumid%5B%5D=53&forumid%5B%5D=54&forumid%5B%5D=166&r=1

don't mean to be a nerd here but for any hard cooler like this they should be pre cooled before putting ice in em according to their owner's manual. Just like when you pre heat a mug or something for tea or espresso. 👍🏼

I don't understand why yeti would skip the drain plug on their tallest cooler. If I have wine bottles upright the last thing I want to do is tip it over to drain or even worse pulling everything out to tip over and drain

Everbilt hands down. Yeti didn’t perform to justify $160 more.

Yeti as a company really needs to understand name brand bs doesn't sell like it used to. They really need to work on making their products better for that premium price they want to charge

No test of the temps of the drinks?

Glad I'm not the only one late to the game on this one, but yeah. I'm kind of with you on this one. Since the Yeti is 2CuFt smaller, less air space. Less air space means the same amount of ice will cool it more. (Think about the whole "a full freezer will stay cold longer than an empty one" adage.) Plus the taller design of the Yeti means cold air doesn't spread as much as it falls. So yeah....science! The amount of ice left is a marginal measurement, IMHO, but it was the one that they could easily convey on camera. Temp of the drinks would have also required a 'pre-cooler' temp to show not only how cold, but how much colder did it get.

You forgot the test if you ran over it or it fell out of your truck on the highway, which one would produce less stress. Everbuilt is clear winner and by far best value.

The more air found inside of any cooler is going to melt the ice faster , even yeti instructs you avoid any air gaps .

I have an RTIC 24. Looks just like the Everbilt. $100. By far the best cooler I have ever owned. I’ll fill it with drinks and ice on Friday, it will sit on my boat until Sunday and still have ice in it on Sunday. I have yet to find YETI anything that outperforms RTIC, or other manufacturers for that matter. I only own one yeti cup, and that’s because of the magnetic slide on the lid. They do have everyone beat with that. That was a great idea. But as far as coolers and cups, they are no better than anyone else at keeping things cold or hot. You’re just wasting your money.

Sooo.....the Everbilt is 26 qt vs. Yeti 24 qt. That means the Yeti is .92 the size of the Everbilt. That alone counts for 1.52 lbs of lost ice in the test. They said the Yeti lost 6.2 lbs. vs. the 8 lbs. in the Everbilt. Add in the 1.44 lbs. (if the Yeti was the same size as the Everbilt) and the test gets MUCH closer, especially given the price difference! This is assuming my math is correct. I admit it has been awhile since I have been in school. :) This makes them much closer, not counting esthetics. Even at the normal price of $89.00.

Travel ball parents love coolers that don't have a big footprint in their folding wagons at tournaments. The wider the cooler's footprint, the less room for chairs, food, fans, etc.

The generic cooler was set up for failure , it’s inside dimensions are bigger than the Yeti’s therefor more space to keep cool and more space for hot air at start of test . In order for test to had been fare , you would have obtain equal size coolers .. Also the Yeti when dropped , was dropped flat on its lid , the cheap cooler took the hit , rite on edge .. ( The takeaway ) the cheaper cooler is a better value and potentially holds ice as long as Yeti 🤔

The everbilt is the exact same height as the Yeti load out Bucket. I have both and they make a nice pair. I use the bucket for my dog’s food container plus water and food bowl plus teether. The everbilt is just used for beer and beverages. I often set my two burner stove on top of the cooler it is just the right size. I like the recessed cup holders and have had a great experience with the everbilt. Well worth $40. With the money you save buy a yeti loadout bucket maybe eve the lid, caddy and insert. Then you can be weird like me.

The ice melt test was poorly done. Since they used the same amount of ice for coolers with different volumes, the larger cooler will always be at a disadvantage. If you did the same test with the Roadie 24 and the Roadie 48, you'd get the same results. The smaller cooler will outperform the larger one because of the difference in air space.

People who work in construction or outdoor jobs use coolers like these daily for their employees to have water bottles available and refilling them with ice daily can be annoying and expensive over time, so I see where people need the ice to last a couple of days.

The drain spout is to drain the excess word out of the cooler not to empty the cooler Some people may not can lift the cooler like other people can to turn it over in empty or drain the water out of it And especially if you have cans of soda or beer or whatever else you may have in it
