I like to think Bathilda had Harry while she was waiting for Hagrid. I can't imagine her realizing harry was alive and just leaving him in his blown up house.

Heres a thought, Fudge knows the Minitry’s official record of the events. That record will largely be based on Dumbledore’s testimony. Dumbledore, in order to preserve the bluff he used on Snape and maintain the story Snape believes, gives an account in which the fidelius charm was performed much later.

I think the reason everyone knew about Harry was that Hagrid, with baby Harry in tow, decided to stop at the Leaky Cauldron and showed him to everyone and told them what happened. “I shouldn’t have told you that!”

I really do like the little theory that Hagrid was like "I know you're going to come here in 10 years, but I gotta show you all of my creatures!" And shows Harry the unicorns, Buckbeak (Which is why Buckbeak trusted Harry so quickly), and maybe a few of the Centaurs. Which is why they know about him. It's such a Hagrid thing to do!

I am most certain that Hagrid spent most of that time crying and hugging Harry.

You've missed something: Snape. His Dark Mark would've vanished just like Wormtail's, and he has already started working for Dumbledore. He would've alerted Dumbledore that something happened to Voldemort, and given what Dumbledore knows about the prophecy it would've been a good idea to check on the Potters. Bathilda might not have been involved at all, or she could've alerted Dumbledore at the same time as Snape or she could've gone to check on the Potters on Dumbledore's order.

The idea the dark marks disappeared immediately helps with knowing why the ministry had a hard time identifying the death eaters from those who were imperious.

I have a feeling the reason hagrid took so long to get Harry to privet drive is because he was looking for the safest route because the death eaters were probably out looking for Harry.

I had always assumed the charm was on the *house* not James and Lily. Also Hagrid and baby Harry missing for a bit? Was probably his first time ever flying by his own means and he either got lost or just got super into it and lost track of time.

What I was missing, is the part that the Imperius curse break after Voldemort's defied. So a whole bunch of formally "evil" people coming back to their families would instantly alert everyone, that Voldemort has fallen.

The fact that Sirius gave Hagrid his motorcycle means he and Dumbledore must’ve known he was innocent.

What’s always confused me is how did Dumbledore still think that Sirius was the secret keeper/the one that betrayed the potters if Peter had to be the one to give him the secret to visit the potters

Sirius did not want to know the location of the Potters because it was known that they were close friends. They knew he could get captured and tortured for the location so he refused to be keeper for their safety. I think that is why he wouldn't attend the birthday party.

I never thought about the fact that Sirius couldn’t be at Harry’s first birthday party. He was probably so crushed…I mean his BEST FRIENDS in the entire world have a death threat over their head and HE CAN’T COME TO PROTECT THEM!!

It's so wild and sad that Lily and James were both TWENTY ONE when they died, and Severus was in this late THIRTIES when he died. That's so unfair. They all had their whole lives and just got them ripped away. Lily and James literally. Severus figuratively considering he was practically a servant both to Dumbledore and to Voldemort. I always get my mind blown at that cause I think of the movie actors ages for the characters and for Severus in particular, thanks to Alan Rickman's performance. He always just seemed so...like...not OLD but wise beyond his years type. And then I learn NO he was actually pretty...pretty young when he was murdered same with the rest of the marauders they were also only in their thirties it's upsetting.

The charm was on the house. In POA, Sirius recounts the story and says, "when I saw their house (and their bodies)..." It still doesn't make sense why Lily or James couldn't be the secret keeper to begin with, like Bill is for Shell Cottage.

They were in hiding for a year, sure, but I think the fidelius charm really was only cast a week before and thus neither dumbledore nor bathilda could visit afterwards and so only sirius knew about petrer being the secret keeper, but it was only a week at that point. Bathilda noticed the destroyed house after the charm broke and told dumbledore but must have been too scared to find 3 dead bodies ( she wouldn't know voldemort was defeated, she would just assume they were all killed and he wrecked the house cuz hes voldemort). In fact dumbledore might only have known harry was alive when bathilda told him about the house because snape also told him about the vanishing dark mark. At which point he sent hagrid to fetch harry who told mcgonagal while dumbledore was working on and casting the blood protection spell. Sirius comes and sees hagrid has harry and gives him the bike (still early in the morning and dark but getting towards daylight) and goes to hunt peter. Bathilda also sees hagrid pull harry out and realizes the truth that harry didnt die and spreads the rumor to the rest of the order who spread that everywhere while at the same time the fact that the people voldemort personally imperiused are free, the deatheaters see the vanishing dark marks and are covering themselves and freeing others they'd imperiused all this info is snowballing into the fact that harry lived, voldemort is somehow defeated and so everyone assumes harry defeated voldemort without knowing much of the facts. Sirius's bike can fly but presumably is no faster than a normal bike and doesnt have the booster at this point. He can only fly it once its dark outside again and it takes time to get from godrics hollow to little whinging. He probably spent the daylight hours with bathilda waiting for it to get dark or driving normally on the road until it was dark enough to fly. How far apart are godrics hollow and little whinging? I'm guessing drive time on a normal speed motorcycle and waiting for darkness account for the missing time.

Two things: - Since Bathilda visited every day, she must have been in on the secret, which means that the Fidelius charm wouldn't even have to be broken at all for her to notice and promptly alert Dumbledore. - Dumbledore only knows to send Harry to Privet Drive because Petunia and Dudley share Lily's blood and therefore can carry her protective enchantment on Harry, which Dumbledore can only have found out after getting to Godrick's Hollow and finding out what happened, which means that he just sent Hagrid to collect Harry and told him to bring him to Privet Drive later, which in turn explains why it took him so long to get there.

I don't think Peter told Dumbledore the Potter's location because then Dumbledore would have known they had changed their secret keeper. Dumbledore still thought Sirius was the secret keeper at the time of Sirius' arrest

Fun fact, in the book the newscaster says the "fireworks" people have been seeing on November 1st might be early bonfire night celebrations, which I've learned as an adult is on November 5th, but in Sweden bonfire night isn't a thing, so the translator made them say they were early Walpurgis night celebrators instead, which is something celebrated in Sweden. Problem is Walpurgis night is always April 30th, creating a continuity error in the Swedish translation, when it is later mentioned how it was Halloween when Lilly and James died. I just listened to the Swedish translation of the audiobooks for the first time in at least 12 years, and being so familiar with the English versions by now, I noticed a lot of these continuity errors due to translation, as well as a lot of outright bad translations, and a lot of inconsistency as to what the translated titles of in universe books and stores and I think at least one instance of a spell being translated differently in two different books. I know some of these inconsistencies and errors have been corrected in later editions, but as far as I know the Bonfire night/walpurgis night thing is still there. One of the earliest changes was giving the Mirror of Erised a Swedish translation, when someone realized the inscription was just backwards English, so now we have a backwards Swedish version. For the longest time Bathilda Bagshots name on the shopping list in book one was Mathilda Bagshot in Swedish, but that is one of those I know is corrected. Another one that was later corrected is during the OWL's in book 5, Harry thinks to himself during the Astronomy written exam that he was sure none of Jupiter's moons where covered in Mice, which is a callback from earlier in that book when Hermione corrects his homework and comments that Harry must have misheard Professor Sinistra, as he has written that it is covered in Mice rather than Ice. In Swedish they switched it in his homework so that he'd written the moon was covered in Rust, not Frost, so that the translated versions would still be close enough to plausibly be confused, while the correct answer stil had to do with Ice. However the translator didn't catch that the comment during the exams where a callback to the homework, so she just translated it as it stood, that he was sure it wan't covered in Mice. Why he would ever think that, Swedish readers would never find out, but if you pick up one of the most recent editions it will say during the exam he was sure no moon was covered in Rust, to match the homework.

I imagine the info of Voldemorts fall spread so quickly because of the imperius curse, with voldy gone a ton of people must have immediately been freed from the curse which dumbledore would have noticed right away and likely told Hagrid to get to the potters right away to check on them, while Sirius wasn’t secret keeper I imagine Peter told him so he could still go there if he wanted, when he checked on Peter and he wasn’t there he was scared and immediately went to check on potters where he ran into hagrid, also as you guys said dark mark’s probably instantly vanished which I could see snape informing dumbledore of as well. Dumbledore also would have had to tell hagrid where to take Harry if something was wrong which lead hagrid to tell mcgonical who goes and waits there all day. What it comes down to is how long it took hagrid to get to the potters since he didn’t have the bike.

I don't get why Dumbledore thought it was Sirius that gave up the Potters location to Voldemorte. Hagrid, his most trusted ally saw Sirius arrive after himself, and then not only didn't attack Hagrid to get to Harry, but also gave him his motorcycle to get him to safety faster. Surely that should have put some doubt in his mind that Sirius was responsible. I feel like if Dumbledore wanted to he could have easily of gone to Azkaban to speak to Sirius and find out that it was Peter that gave up the Potters, be it by trust or watching Sirius' memories in the Pensive.

Not sure that the fidelius charm was done that early because if it had Dumbledoor would have known that Wormtail was secret keeper. They could still be in hiding but just not under the fidelius charm yet. And in Deathly Hollows the letter says that Sirius was doing a job for the Order and Harry wouldn’t remember anyway.

I'm thinking Bathilda was the Potter's source of groceries while they were in hiding. She was a long time local who Dumbledore trusted and we know that you can duplicate food if you have it but notjust summon it out of no where, so having someone trustworthy and likely not being watched be able to make weekly or biweekly grocery runs for the people who literally can't leave their house makes sense

The fact that JK never explained *any* of this properly for it to make sense in the books, but instead constantly revisits the night with Lilly's sacrifice has always bothered me. Had Sirius been more prominent and fleshed out, then perhaps he could've explained the events to Harry (and to us), or at least have Dumbledore explain it in one of the *billion* times he speakes to harry. There's just too many things revolving this that just doesn't add up, which honestly just screams, that JK had a hard time keeping track of the events in her own story. --Which I mean, is fair. It happens. But this is why having storyboards and keeping a log of specific important events and their chronological order in notes is key to continuity. --Not that she has ever been a stickler for continuity, but you know.

I think Hagrid was simply taking the long way to his destination. He was probably trying to avoid being predictable by taking the direct route.

So, if Peter tells Bathilda and Dumbledore about the locations of the Potters, why is at least Dumbledore thinking that Sirius betrayed the potters until prisoner?

Sirius said himself in PoA that the fidelius charm was placed one week before. Being in hiding and the fidelius charm are two different things.

Dumbledore must have needed the whole day to craft the intricate charm that protects Harry at Privet Drive (I'd like a video about exactly how that works, if anyone's interested). So he told Hagrid to keep Harry safe while he figures it out. I imagine magic to be like computer science (because computers ARE like magic!). Crafting an original spell, like coding an original piece of software, that will work flawlessly, and be 100% secure, without any loopholes or vulnerabilities, for 16 years would certainly take some time. If anything, it's amazing it ONLY took a day for him to complete it. Also, Hagrid's late by, what, a few minutes? Cut him some slack. You try riding on a flying motorcycle while carrying a 15 month old and see how punctual you are.

My biggest question with this chapter is the fact that once Hagrid mentioned Sirius Dumbledore didn't even ask where was Sirius now or anything. I mean... Sirius was supposed to be the secret-keeper as far as Dumbledore knew.

I'm going to say Dumbledor never was told the secret to enter the Potter's house. Why? cause he thought Peter was the secret keeper. I am more inclined to believe he sent messages through Sirius and Sirius brought the cloak to Dumbledor making it so Dumbledor never knew Sirius wasn't the secret keeper.

I like to imagine Hagrid lost track of time playing with Harry and being overwhelmed with his cuteness XD

Why would Dumbledore send Hagrid to rescue a baby from rubble if it wasn't the fastest way? I think that Hagrid must have been in Godrick's Hallow already, possibly watching the house. He would have told Dumbledore as soon as he saw what happened and since he was already there, Dumbledore asked him to get Harry. I don't see any way that Dumbledore, a man who can apparate, would send Hagrid to save a baby the rubble instead of doing it himself

The "Full Day Problem" could also be explained by Hagrid first taking Harry to Hogwarts for a medical exam. I am sure they wanted to make sure the boy wasn't horribly injured before dumping him on the Dursleys. It would have been irresponsible to simply take Harry directly to the Dursleys without making sure he was okay. The poor kid just took a Death Curse afterall.

I wonder if there's any feeling when the fidelius charm expires. Could dumbledore have known because he felt the magic holding the secret dissipate? side note this is my new favorite SCB video. One thing that has always confused me is how the fidelius charm works on things people already know. Like, certainly people knew where the Potters lived before, so does the charm make you forget something if you already know it?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's frowned upon to apparate with a baby or while pregnant. I mean, babies have that soft spot on their heads and if apparating squeezes you on all sides I could see that being a big issue. So, if whoever went to pick up Harry couldn't apparate maybe sending Hagrid is safer than other wizards because his giant blood can protect him and whatever he carries from attacks, plus he's more used to traveling without magic.

Couple thoughts...How far is the Potter's house from the Dursley's? Also, wasn't it day time when Hagrid arrived to get Harry, and met Sirius? The motorbike did not have an invisibility function as far as I've heard, so in keeping with the secrecy statute, Hagrid couldn't have flown the bike to the Dursleys and had to rather drive it through the countryside on the surface roads muggle style.

Personally I think that Snape might have been the first contact for Dumbledore by the same communication method as the other death eaters

I love the idea that the Dark Mark was almost completely gone after that night. It makes the hunting down of Death Eaters much more difficult, which seems to match how things went down in the aftermath.

Maybe this was answered in another video - how are animals affected by the charm? how did owls know where to go to deliver their letters? Did they have to be sworn in as well?

This is the story they should make movies about. 1st Wizarding war.

I like to think that Hagrid changed his route on the fly when he coincidentally met Serius to still meet the agreed upon meet up. Because he changed the route he ended up being a little late since he's not able to perfect account for the new mode of transportation as well as weather conditions like wind. I also like to think that this spontaneous decision was also an attempt to thwart any further possible leaks.

I think the reason that makes most sense for Hagrid taking so long is simply to have the benefit of the cover of night and therefore not to raise attention with the Muggles or break the Statute of Secrecy when they deliver the boy. Hagrid is a good choice of bodyguard in the meantime because a) he's strong and powerful, b) he's not much of a prominent figure in the order (reputation wise at least) and therefore c) he's probably the last person the Death Eaters would ever try to bully the boy's whereabouts out of. My guess is he just lies low that whole day. As for where, I'm tempted to simply say in his shack at Hogwarts or in Dumbledore's office. That seems far away but the grey area around the speed of the flying motorbike seems to make this reasonable. Aside from that, maybe somewhere in Diagon Alley, like at the Leaky Cauldron or Fortescue's shop (again, for the connection with Florian's ancestor).

I think you were partially right about how it became common knowledge so quickly but there's more. It's said in the books by Lupin or Sirius I can't remember that the last war was very different. It was very open. People knew Voldemort was in power. I imagine part of that was having death eaters and people of that sort very prominent in the world. So, when voldemort was destroyed, the death eaters all went unti hiding immediately. That would include releasing any spells or curses, particularly the imperius curse. So there was suddenly an awaking of dozens and dozens of people and a lack of big brother Voldemort. With appirition available, and a wizards known quality of spreading news/secrets, I think the news moved exponentially through the Wizarding community. This is mainly speculation but it's what makes sense to me considering so many people were out celebrating even before Sirius confronted peter.

Why couldn't James or Lily been their own secret keeper? Bill was secret keeper for himself and Fleur. Also I always figured the missing day was due to the Healers at St. Mungo's examining Harry to see if there are any lingering effects of the failed curse.

Wasn't the Fidelius Charm placed on the Potters' house? Also, I thought it was established that Wormtail got Voldemort's wand from the destroyed house when he ran away in PoA? (Which doesn't make sense to me either, but I thought it was what we were going with...)

I love the video. I actually wrote an entire screen play for this and plan on shooting my fan film for it next fall (lots of pre-production first). It’s about a 17 page script with 5 or 6 locations to shoot at and lots of actors to cast. I can’t wait to film it though. It’s going to be awesome!

If the fidelius charm was put into place earlier and dumbledore knew the location doesn't that mean that peter must have told him? Dumbledore would have to have known it was peter if he went to collect the cloak.

I always thought that Hagrid took Harry back to Hogwarts where Dumbeldoor took some time to decide what to do with Harry, how to raise him. Finally made the decision and told Hagrid to bring him there and meets him there. My thought process is that Harry is just 1 so it would be a very bad idea to aparate with him or use flu network ( which I think internally uses apparition).

The biggest issue with this theory is that if the Fidelius charm was active for over a year and the letter about Harry’s first birthday was while the charm was active it would mean that Peter had to tell Dumbledore the secret and thus Dumbledore would 100% know that Peter was the secret keeper because literally nobody else could possibly tell him

I doubt it matters to this exact idea or anything. But I always took the secret keeper part as serius was the keeper at first, but they then changed it to be Peter and that's when/why voldemort was able to attack. And may be why they said it was only 1 week

I always imagined that Peter told plenty of people. Bathilda and Dumbledore, Sirius, Lupin, probably others of the order. He would’ve been expected to tell them; they can know they just can’t tell the secret. Sirius was most likely not at Harry’s first birthday because he was on a mission for the order.

If Bathilda could already see through the charm, how could she tell the charm had broken in order to inform Dumbledore? Also, I always assumed the charm was on the house, not the Potters. Did I miss something?

My mom has been asking me this question for almost 20 years, ever since we first started reading this series. What happened to that first night and why did it take Hagrid so long to get to Privet Drive? Thanks so much for finding an answer to this!

9:36 Although it is quite confusing, I also think it does make sense. Honestly, this whole video is a really interesting breakdown on everything that probably happened on that fateful night.

I think we can determine the estimated time that Wormtail actually told Voldemort about Potters location. In the note to Serious, Lilly says Peter was really sad on the visit. I don't think its because he shared the news of death but because that's the first time he visited after telling Voldemort their location and he knew they're going to die really soon.

The meeting at night might also have been because no-one would see them drop a baby on a doorstep, and maybe Dumbledore though it would be harder for the Dursley's to refuse Harry if he just ended up there. If Dumbledore and Hagrid came knocking at the door, the Dursley's would surely fight nail and tooth for them to take Harry, but not even the Dursley's would leave a baby lying on the street hoping someone else would pick it up.

If Bathilda already knows where they live (and thus is in on the secret), she can see the house. Maybe she just happened to see green flashes?

Great video, as usual. One part you left out was Snape arriving at the house and leaving baby Harry. I don’t believe it is written in the books but it was in one of the flashback scenes in deathly hallows.

The biggest problem I have with this incredibly well thought out theory is- If Bathilda knew Pettigrew was the secret keeper, then why didn’t she testify to that at Sirius’s trial. She or the letter laying in the floor of Sirius’s room could have proven that Wormtail was secret keeper all along. However, everything else said seems to make sense, and I love it because it’s like a well thought out FanFiction without the bad filler writing 🤣

I loved all of your videos. A multipart video that I would love to see is the books from Draco's perspective. Harry was just as horrible to Draco as Draco was to Harry. (Sectumsempera). I think that it would be interesting to get into the mind of Harry's "bully." Both in terms of interactions with Harry, but also how he reacts to the events of the seven books. I hope that you like my idea.

I always thought that Hagrid took him to a healer, possibly Madam Pomphry to get him seen to. I think Hagrid wasn’t supposed to show up until about the time that Dumbledore was playing with the lights. Dumbledore intended for Harry to be dropped off at night so no one would see, hence his use of the deluminator. Could you imagine Hagrid walking down Privite Drive in broad daylight to drop off the baby.

I’m really hoping they mention the Cursed Child. Even though they don’t consider it canon, I do like having a better grasp on that part of the story, since it has been years since I read it, it went back to this night and I think after watching all scb videos multiple times, most of us have a pretty good grasp of the story by now haha

There is one point I’m confused about: As said in the video, Peter as the secret keeper must’ve told it to Bathilda and Dumbledore, meaning they both knew who was the secret keeper, but in PoA we clearly see that Dumbledore genuinely thinks Sirius is guilty up until a certain point. This means he cannot know who was the secret keeper at the time.

I am pretty sure that Hagrid picked up Harry, took the motorcycle - realised that he now had extra time to keep Harry extra safe, so he locked himself with Harry at Gringotts. In his safe, he spent his time correctly learning how to calculate the exchange rate between galleons, knuts and sickles so that he could flex in front of Harry ten years later.

Could it be that the fidelius charm doesn't work on people who already have previous knowledge of the thing you're trying to keep secret? Bethelda knew that the Potters lived next door, and when the fidelius charm was put on them, perhaps that bit of knowledge doesn't get erased from her memory? Maybe because she knew the subject of the secret before it became a secret, then she continues to know?

You know what I can't figure out? How did the Potter's pay their bills? If nobody knows where they are, how were their bills delivered? Did their house get returned to the bank? Was Dumbledore paying it in their place?

What about Snape… He was there before anyone else. He held Lilly in his arms while Harry cried in the crib. Did Snape tell Dumbledore about what happened before Dumbledore sent Hagrid to fetch baby Harry?

There were also a lot of people under the imperius curse cast by voldemort. The curse ended the moment voldemort died, so suddenly there were a bunch of people telling everyone how horrible it was to be mind controlled for so long. I'm also sure there were people like Lucius, that quickly realized what the disappearing dark mark meant and quickly joined the group of freed victims, sharing some informations like Voldemort going after the Potters to make their bluff more believable. So it totally makes sense that the information spread extremity fast

Why do i suspect that Dumbledore let the Prophecy have its say and FOR THE GREATER GOOD, he thought, he was going to let Voldemort die. But he didn't know about the Horcruxes then. So, he couldn't predict whether Voldemort would survive that night.

Because Sirius would likely take Harry, report Peter to the Minestry, and then raise Harry at#12. So how would that change the story? I would be so happy if you decided to do this, because its a super interesting concept
