The U.S. just levied new sanctions against Zimbabwe.
While the media hardly mentioned them, the US & EU have sanctioned Zimbabwe for 21 years.
BT's Kei Pritsker explains the devastating sanctions and how they punish the country simply for reclaiming land for the Black majority.

I am a Zimbabwean and a Pan Afrikan. Great cover of historical colonial injustices. What is evidently clear and sad is the fact that the West bullied my country for trying to correct a historical imbalance they created through colonialism. Ours is a struggle for self determination based off land, because land is the fundamental vehicle behind all economic processes. Land is the source of life. Land is literally God. These sanctions have a ripple effect on my country's economic psych as evidenced by millions who have fled the country because of economic hardships. Another sad point is how the West is utterly committed to systematic oppression and imperialism using access to credit and international trade as weapons, something Western audiences have no idea how this plays out in countries they oppress, with democracy and religion as tools of cultural imperialism.

The problem is that like with most issues, it is difficult to get through the corporate propaganda. - Al Jazeera is just a neocolonial outfit, spreading the British line on Zimbabwe. - Landreform scares the European aristocracy, because land ownership is the basis of their power. - They are afraid of successful landreform in Zimbabwe, because it would set a positive example for their own population. Basically the British government had an agreement with the Zimbabwean government called the Willing Buyer, Willing Seller landreform program. The Zimbabwean government was supposed to pay for improvements made to the land (wells, roads, storage facilities, etc.) and the British government for the value of the land itself. It was never going to work, because it depended on bits and pieces of land becoming available at whatever prices the landowners would ask for it. In November 1997, Clare Short in Tony Blair's government put in the final nail, when they publicly declared they would not hold up their end of the deal. Clare Short, Secretary of State for International Development at the DfID, November 1997: "I should make it clear that we do not accept that Britain has a special responsibility to meet the costs of land purchase in Zimbabwe. We are a new Government from diverse backgrounds without links to former colonial interests. My own origins are Irish and as you know we were colonised, not colonizers." So Clare Short thought that an international agreement between two states was a gift to the Zimbabwean government by former colonials who felt guilty? Anyway, when there is an international agreement between 2 states, and one states withdraws from it or decides to just no longer abide by it, the other state has no obligation to continue with it. So the Zimbabwean government was in the right. And these sanctions are illegal. Years ago, the damage to the Zimbabwean economy by economic sanctions was estimated at $42 billion. It must be a lot more today, well over $60 billion I would guess. It is time they were compensated for it.

Zimbabwe is essential as a resource for electrolyser technology, known as a proton exchange membrane (PEM) system. “the energy transition will be built with metals.” That is true not only for the obvious high-volume commodities such as steel, copper, and lithium, but also for lesser-known metals such as iridium. But companies’ plans for green hydrogen projects suggest there will be a steep increase in demand over the coming decade. Meeting just the EU’s goals for green hydrogen production could by 2030 lead to demand for iridium for electrolysers that is several times current global supply. The Biden administration has acknowledged that supplies of platinum group metals (PGMs), including iridium, were a critical issue for the development of the low-carbon hydrogen industry that was endorsed in the bipartisan infrastructure bill passed last year. President Joe Biden last month issued a series of executive orders invoking powers under the 1950 Defense Production Act to stimulate production of clean energy technologies, including electrolysers and PGMs. The administration’s statement argued that support for PGM catalysts “will enhance national and energy security by reducing US reliance on imported fossil fuels, particularly Russia and China.” The US energy secretary, this week announced a new partnership with Australia, intended to accelerate progress towards a net-zero emissions energy system. The two governments’ joint statement highlighted “the crucial role critical minerals and materials will play in the energy transition” and in enabling the deployment of technologies including telecommunications, Ai, space exploration, and Tesla type gravity engines !World iridium supply is currently dominated by South Africa, as a by-product of platinum and palladium production. South Africa accounts for 87% of global iridium production, with a further 8% coming from Zimbabwe and 3% each from Russia and Canada, according to the US Geological Survey.Haitis supply which is illegally mined to keep the nation porr is not mentioned but the UN security forces currently guard irridum mines from use by Haitian nationals. South Africa also has the great bulk of the world’s PGM reserves: about 91%, followed by Russia with about 6%, Zimbabwe with about 2% and the US with about 1%, again according to the USGS. The green tech industry is aiming to grow rapidly, and a materials supply chain that is rooted almost entirely in southern Africa looks like a critical vulnerability that the west wants to exploit by starving Zimbabwe and offering them pennies so they can steal billions. Melany Vargas, Wood Mackenzie’s head of Americas hydrogen consulting, said: “From an energy security perspective, there is certainly the potential for disruption to supplies that would be a constraint on the growth of green hydrogen production.”Meaning they are looking for ways to cause unrest and steal the resource before it can be sold. The likely increase in demand for platinum looks manageable, but iridium could be much more of a challenge. Total world iridium production this year will be about 255,000 ounces, Irridiums price on the world market is currently 45 billion per ton. Is iridium more expensive than gold? Iridium, which is also used in spark plugs, has climbed to $6,000 an ounce, according to Johnson Matthey Plc data. That makes it more than three times more expensive than gold.

Kenya's former president tried to advocate for them publicly but our country was threatened with the same severe sanctions. So we just found a roundabout way to trade with them in exchange for gold and using the Chinese Yuan as a transaction currency. I think the Chinese are currently trading with them and developing their infrastructure for gold as well. If many more countries did this, then the harsh effects would be greatly eased for a lot of unfairly sanctioned countries. Yet the West is asking why many developing countries are tilting towards China. It's because of these sanctions that China is becoming a lifeline for a lot of condemned countries right now. I hope BRICS succeeds so the developing countries can have a strong alternative for trade and development.

And while we did get some social justice we NEVER got economic justice the economic cost of slavery and Jim Crow was just overlooked , ignored....the homes , businesses , property , etc we were cheated and scammed out of was never paid back. Black cities and towns burned to the ground , demolished or flooded and made into lakes . All stolen with no compensation. Not to mention black inventions that were stolen and history rewritten to hide the theft. Just for example How Jack Daniels was taught the art of making liquor by a slave.

Most of Zimbabwe's problems currently stems from corruption, greed and incompetence. Sanctions from US only affects those very corrupt politicians, not the entire country. Zimbabwe surely cannot rely on just the US for its prosperity? There is plenty of countries to trade with, and besides, most African countries criticise the western countries, especially the ones historically involved with colonisation. So why do Zimbabwe want to trade with them in the first place? Zimbabweans should put their money where their mouth is, and sanction UK and US, and trade with eastern countries or Russia, If you hate US, don't trade with them or expect them to trade with you. It takes two to be in a relationship.

Thank you for talking truth and sense about these histories! It would be great to see a series that goes through the historical context of other countries sanctioned/embargoed by the USA (I know, it'll be a long series!), and also the history of some of these laws such as the papal bulls of 1452 and 1493, terra nullius and the doctrine of manifest destiny that were used to justify the sorts of colonial and imperial atrocities that Zimbabwe and most of the global south suffered and still remain today as the base for the current stage of colonialism.

Correct, sanctions are all about hegemony and nothing else. It’s sad how Zimbabwe is sanctioned yet Saudi Arabia gets away with far worse things like public floggings, public beheadings, apostasy laws, committing a genocide in Yemen and yet Zimbabwe has not executed any person since 2004 as they oppose death penalty, let alone behead anyone for religious reasons like Saudis. Zimbabwe is not committing a genocide on any of its neighbours, but they want to punish it so they can install a puppet regime to control its precious minerals like Platinum, chrome, lithium etc. It’s all about money and not constitution.

This year alone so 15 countries have registered their interest in joining BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa): - Argentina - Nigeria - Tunisia - Senegal - Egypt - Algeria - Indonesia - Afghanistan - Iran - Kazakhstan - Saudi Arabia - Nicaragua - Turkey - UAE - Thailand If all those countries join the organisation, the world will become multipolar and the West will no longer be the dominant global force. During the Russian operation in Ukraine, the West had the opportunity to practice what they preach but they just couldn't resist being racist even in war times. Didn't even try to hide it. The world saw, the world reacted. The Western dominance is over. The third world will soon become the first world
