The comment by the person with ADHD is exactly what I experience as a fellow sufferer when I try to sit down and do a hobby- getting to the painting desk even when I want to paint is hard enough, and then once I'm there getting in any kind of a rhythm can be just as difficult. A few comments, if you're open to it try and get medicated for ADHD as that helps with focus and overcoming that feeling of being stuck in the mud and unable to do anything- if you don't want to be medicated the only thing I find that works is routine; it's hard to get the routine in place, but if you can manage to paint two or three days in a row I find my brain doesn't resist as much as it becomes more of a second nature that I paint each day at a set time rather than having to spontaneously summon the focus and willpower to initiate the task. Also, try and do something simple like base coating to get yourself going so your brain doesnt get overwhelmed- I find it hardest to focus when I'm trying something new and my brain is full or questions and doubts, start simple so the brain barrier is as low as possible and once you've gathered some momentum you can try harder things. Flow state is easiest to find when you know what your doing and aren't totally out of your comfort zone. In addition setting yourself a really low target like say painting one weapon, or doing one edge highlight can help get you started and stop overwhelm, often I find I keep going after meeting that target but it helps reduce the mental barrier to starting saying "just one" at first. Last thing, either brown noise or some soundtrack (I like Destiny but anything without words will do) can be good for drowning out all the ADHD distractions in your head, and helps me relax into the task. None of these things will change your brain but once you get a routine in place it does get easier- the hard part is establishing the habit. Wish you all the best.

I also have Adhd, and on the autism spectrum as well. I have been medicated for atleast 15+ years now, and i could never go back to not being... Anyways...all those tips are great. I would like to add one more that I got from James, but modifed a bit. When you sit down to paint, and cant because that voice is saying you should be doing something else. Clean your work/paint area, and get it ready. So when the next time you sit down to paint...everything is ready to go and you dont have to fuss with any of it.. I also tend to listen to video game ambient noises like the witcher 3, God of War, and/or God of War Ragnarok...and sometimes i will listen to a 40k audiobook that is the same faction im painting.

Thanks for the kind words and thoughts! I think I'm finally breaking into the routine side of the formula, and I've had some success with it lately. I'm also keeping in mind that almost anything hobby related (cleaning my painting space, priming, assembling kits, arranging /researching models for 3d printing) is indeed "hobby progress," so that's helped a lot with the misplaced "guilt" of feeling demotivated. And yeah, your advice about doing "just one" thing to get over the hump of starting is a really useful and helpful brain hack. Thank you!

I'm not on the autistic spectrum but do have ADHD and I notice there's actually a ton of people in the hobby who have either or both too - but I found while struggling to get started or finished on a project, it's good to firstly have an organised, tidy workspace (which admittedly is a task in itself) and have a selection of half-finished projects just sat there - basically creating as little barrier to getting started on a session as possible, as well as keeping multiple options there so if you're losing focus on one project you can just do some work on another one.

It’s gonna be different for all of us with ADHD and/or ASD. But I find what a lot of the time we are chasing is to be captivated by something and go into hyperfocus. You can’t always expect your brain to want to get fixated on something even if it’s something you love so a lot of the comments here and what the boys in the video have said with things like read/watch some lore etc. But for myself this can work but not always. What I find works is when I’m not feeling it then I don’t pursue it and focus on one of my other hobbies. Hobby rotation is part of the key for me and I always find I’m never truly burnt out by any hobbie. It’s usually I’ve hyperfocussed on something for a good while and then my brain needs to go somewhere else. The other issue I have had with hobbie burn out I’ve found is that when I’m so absorbed and hyperfocussed on a hobby it can be that that’s all I do. When I realise I’ve been doing this I find I need to go do all the mundane boring life things I’ve neglected. As well as spend more time with friends, doing some exercises even some long walks. Cleaning the car. Even just working at a job somewhere. This makes me enjoy doing mundane things in a way because I start to get a buzz thinking about my hobbies and what I want to do next. Being away from the hobby kinda kicks my brain back into fixating again and putting me back into hyperfocus when I finally get the chance to get stuck in again. I guess I “hype” myself up during the times I’m catching up on general life things. Obviously we are all in different financial and life situations so it’s not always possible to do this in this way but I have always found this and a good amount of completely different hobbies to put in rotation keeps me pumped to do at least SOMETHING hobby wise all the time. Also try not to give yourself a hard time when you ain’t feeling anything. Sometimes just feeling meh, not happy, not sad just bored is our brain resting. And because our frontal lobes can’t do good executive functionin - especially memory here - we can forget that we won’t ALWAYS feel this way. We can think bad feelings are here forever when they’re not. Give yourself a break and let the good feelings happen. And most of all get professional help tailored to your specific brain by people that get it.

White Scars are absolutely underrated and picking them for my first army helped me learn how to thin paints properly, layering, and brush control. It’s a wonder what painting 3500 points of space marines with CORAX WHITE can do.

I just got around to this episode and it hits on so many levels... first I am a blood angles fan but my son is a dark angles fan.. so I am enjoying all his new figures and wishing the blood angles would get new figures... as far as brushes.... when I started back in 85 I was using triple zero brushes.. and now I use a winsor & newton series 7 size 2 most of the time... I also have grown to really like brush soap to clean and condition your brushes. I use the masters brush soap... a well maintained good brush is a joy to use... again... fantastic episode....

I learned a lot about the crimping. How not only liquid, i.e. water affects the crimping, but also crimping. It brought much more understanding to what my brushes are doing.

The thing with synthetics and the hooking of the tip is that you can work WITH the hook for some small details, scratches, etc... Goes to your point that whatever brush you have, you can find a use for it

Indeed, I like having one “good” hooked brush for some details or dots. I have some old Reaper detail brushes that tend to hook well.

I store my brushes head down in a cup with the plastic tube protection they come with. I don't think I have ever seen anyone mentioning that an option, it's easy, cheap and it saves space. Also on the topic on getting more if you keep losing them I think you get an appropriate size plastic tube for pluming/gardening etc.. and just cut it to the length you want, you could make dozens out of a single tube, and also they wouldn't be transparent.

I use alot of the small army painter brushes. My brushes always get the hook tip and fray out. I had heard after a bit about not putting paint to high up, but i always submerge brush in-between colors to clean. 😅 This explains it ive been messing up my brushes and didn't think about water in the ferral.

the brushes get the hook tip because all synthetics eventually get the hook tip, usually sooner rather than later. They are just bad to use.

I use almost exclusively Rosemary & Co brushes, mainly Series 33 or Series 323. S33 are quite similar to Artis Opus S but are a bit 'softer', while S323 have much shorter hairs. 90% of the time is a size 2 or 3 brush, but do have a few tiny brushes for eyes. I have tried a couple of W&N S7 brushes and have wasted my money with them, I may have had bad brushes but they were terrible, the tips split after a couple of brush strokes. I would really recommend people try R&Co if you are UK or EU based, dont think they ship to the US, but 50-75% cheaper than a W&N S7. Also clean them well with brush soap at the end of every session, if you dont usually use soap you will be shocked how much paint comes out of a 'clean' brush. Re: replacement brush caps, I use aquarium airline tubing its super cheap per m.

Woo underworlds appreciation. So many good models and an excellent game. It's also a great introduction to painting. I started with it and you get to try new techniques and schemes with each warband, slowly improving with each one without any warband being overwhelming (unlike jumping in and starting a whole army).

4:23 That's how I get all my Leemans and most of my guard vehicles that aren't brand new. I never spend over £20 on one so, you can imagine the condition of some of them. I find the stripping them back and refurbing quite fun. I once got a chimea that when I stripped the first eight layers of paint in this poor model, that half of the plastic was gone and a guy just built like half of the insides out of wood and just glued it to the plastic. 12:39 A Hive city, think dark tide

Great show as always, guys! A good hobby hack for hanging brushes upside down to dry is using those self adhesive rubber cable clips, either the single ones or the ones that come in rows of 5 or 6. I’ve stuck a couple to the wall in front of my hobby desk. If the brush is too narrow and falls through, then a cheeky bulldog clip on the handle works wonders! Would love to hear you guys talk more about drybrushing as it’s something I’ve always struggled with. A Byron special guest segment perhaps? ;)

Brush caps I THINK are made out of the same stuff as heat shrink, usually used to cover exposed wires and solder joints, apply direct heat and the the tube shrink wraps round the joint. It comes in a long rolls for it so you can cut to size needed.

Underworlds is such a great game. Of course there isn’t a 40K equivalent, *but* there is Fireteam. It is the board game version of Kill Team, so you get space marines on a hex board and it’s real fun. There isn’t really deck building, but there are some cards to use that allow for a bit of randomization in the gameplay.

Sigh. I dont see the comment i just made about the brushes...i likely messed up. Imo, when starting out you should do a cheap amazon brush pack. If you find that you like the hobby and want to keep getting better then i would highly recommend the Artis Opus - Fauxhammer - starter set. One series m, two series d, and series s. The M i use for eyes, but not often. The series S size 3 and 1 are workhorses ❤. Love the 3. It also comes with brush soap and instructions how to care for the brushes. Some people skoff at the case, but Byron's reason to train you to store them properly for a longer life span that i heard in his paint phase interview made me go "Oooohhh." Also the case is super nice and keeps them safe for when you might be travelling for a hobby day, or from pets...

Another banger of an episode with so much to unpack. Really enjoyed listening to James talk about rescuing a beaten second hand kit, possibly a future challenge for you guys? Yes Joe! Underworlds is the absolute boss of games. I think there's not a 40k equivalent because 40k is a ranged attack game and that eliminates the need for positioning and coordinating charges in Underworlds. I've still got my Kickstarter set of AO Series S brushes and they have been absolute game changers and powerhouses for me. The size 1 and 2 have had to be replaced and I'll be honest I think the Kickstarter brushes were better quality. But these really got me out of the mindset of "saving your best tools for a special project". Use your best stuff and give yourself a better time. I've even started to separate out my old paints from newer improved formulas from various brands. I would say to try as many brushes as possible, borrow from friends, ask to try them at shows. It's such a personal choice that it's almost worth ignoring all the recommendations. Thankyou for all the brushcare advice. I'll be first to admit that I'm guilty of half those bad habits but I vow to be a more conscious brush user. Cheers.

I have 2 Artis Opus brushes and are indeed wonderful. I've had terrible luck with Windsor series 7's but the first Rafael 8404 I bought has just been incredible for me. I cannot believe it's kept its shape for a year with normal good brush care habits. I wonder if I just got lucky.

On the topic of brushes, I found some of my old blue handle Citadel brushes in both fine detail and detail sizes at my parents place I started using them again rigorously and have to say that these are still absolutely friggin' amazing, they still hold a point. I did try a little while ago, buying some of the current Citadel brushes and was extremely disappointed in the longevity of them. I could only compare it to what I imagine a new hobbyist would go through if they used paints/car body primer/glues that aren't designed for miniature hobbying. I know W&N series 7 are great brushes but sometimes they are hard to find (my local store is always out of the sizes for mini painting) so I would love to recommend to new painters some brushes that have never failed me. Scalecolour made by Scale 75. (Luxury line). The #1 is great for edge highlighting. Another brand that took me by surprise is Wamp series brushes. I tried their Kickstarter and compared to W&N, I found they lasted much much longer, to my surprise. Lastly I was disappointed that you didn't cover a discussion on lead hairs in brushes (in the centre of the brush) and just how absolutely dam frustrating those brushes are to paint with. See you guys at Adepticon.

It's interesting how different painters do their thing: Richard might almost no paint, but then you look at Jose David, another monstrous painter with fine arts background, and he says that a typical problem is precisely underloading brushes, leading to worse tips because the belly of the brush is too dry. And he shows how the very same brush just gets a worse tip when underloaded.

I wish I could say I listened to the cast while doing something interesting like making dentures or fixing aircraft but I can’t. But it provides the perfect backdrop for Sunday morning housework and peeling the potatoes! Once my chores are done I sit down at my painting table all geared up for painting and promptly put the Xbox on. Well I do only sometimes paint!

I've got a couple of the Army Painter brushes with triangular handles, the Wargamer Detail and Character, they're the same length as the M series size 0, but don't have anything like the same body, they're maybe half the width. They're listed as Rotmander Sable, so a real hair, but not Kolinsky. I also have a Wargamer Monster, which is synthetic, so the line is a mix. These were the first brushes I bought. I quite like the triangle shape, it means I can get it sat in the exact same place in my hand, in the exact same orientation, so brush behaviour is very predictable. Though I wouldn't say it's otherwise inherently better or worse than a round handle. Obviously this is personal preference. Something I will note, I've done my best to look after the brushes, but the Monster lost it's point shortly after I got it, so it just gets used as rough base coating, not sure if this is common with synthetic? The Character I don't use much as I find the Detail much better, though it does dry out VERY quickly. Both have kept a pretty good point to them. I've used Masters soap after every painting session. Haven't yet given the Series M a go, they were a Christmas present and I've been mid project, so didn't want to switch brushes part way through.

Good Evening Lads, Just caught up on the entire podcast from front to back on a twenty hour drive from LA to Seattle! Love the kind and fraternal energy you bring to the hobby, and I have come off of my drive full of ideas and inspiration. I have a question for question of the week! I run a small Warhammer community at the local game store where I work. I was inspired to run a painting competition of my own after listening to the episodes about competing. I was thinking of doing a single model competition and restricting it to 50mm base size as to not overwhelm anyone who hasn’t competition painted before. Do you have any additional advice on running a painting competition, or ideas how to make it more entry-level friendly and focused on peer-critique and improvement? Thanks in advance for all the advice and inspiration!

I have a Raphael 8404 Kolinsky Sable round #1 that I picked up more than 5 years ago and still use for almost everything apart from washes & drybrushing. The body holds a good amount of paint, puts anemic windsors to shame, still comes to a good point. Not quite as pin-needle perfect as it once was but still my best brush that I use every time I paint and I clean it out and maintain it religiously. It was so perfect and I used it so much that I ordered a second while the first was still young, in the hope of just reducing strain on the first by switching between the two. The second /never/ came to a good point. ever. almost as if the point had been snipped clean off before shipping, leaving small but notably flat end that simply could not point. Extremely disappointing. Recently, as the first brush has finally started to show its age and heavy use, Iv'e been meaning to try again, see if maybe the second was just a fluke, but the Raphael 8404 round #1 has been sold out at all the US stores I've checked for more than a year now. It's to the point that I'm about to give up and order from Jacksons.

Are there any models that you guys think got worse with a new version? One for me is the old Space Wolf Wulfen look way better than the ones that came out in 7th edition. I also love the old stormtrooper models that were absolutely caked in grenades and saw the Kasrkin replacement as them "cadiafying" the units

A quick storage question. I currently store brushes with the bristles downwards, but with the protective sleeves on so the bristles aren't crushed. Is this fine to do?

If Artis Opus are branded/Made from Rosemary n Co what makes them better than that brand? Also I bought 3 Raphael 1,0,00. The 1 and 0 both split and the 00 has been perfect. I contacted company I bought them off and got a partial refund. All brushes are cleaned using same cleaning routine and products.

No I can factually say they are not as I founded Artis Opus and was and one of the owners. I spent nearly 3 months designing both series S and series M each respectively from handle weight to head length and fill of hair and more. R&C manufacture them as there are only a few brush makers with the skill and decades of experience we needed to create the range with us. James / Siege Studios.

@SiegeStudios this was not intended to put across any point. Its what I've read in various parts of the Internet. I've never used any AO brushes. I've went on others advice though for Raphael and Davinci. Every brush gets its haters tbh. Also not everything read is true. I did know that Rco did the manufacturing but did not know it wasn't part of there own design.

If your synthetics do get hooked grab your significant others hair straighteners and a cup of boiling water. Dip the brush in the water then roll it like you do on the pallette to get your tip to a point on 1 of the plates on the straighteners. Bye bye hook 🪝
