Mamic was/is a chairman of Dinamo Zagreb, and he is like some kind of mafia boss. During his time at Dinamo Zagreb players like Eduardo Da Silva, Modric, Badelj,..., all came to prominence and were sold, Dinamo really produced crazy amount of quality players who were later sold for huge profits. Dinamo is 3rd on the list of teams with most players at this world cup. So back to Mamic. He was a good at making profits, but he also stole a lot of money, he made really fishy contracts with young talents and eventually grew so strong that he got a lot of influence in croatian football association. So some people dislike Modric because he lied at the trial to try and save a criminal (only Luka knows the reasons, might be a big thanks for what Mamic did for his early career, might be fear, might be lack of balls).

Average viewers in HNL (Croatia football league) is a tiny 500 people per match, where most of it comes from hajduk split games which have about 10k avg on matches. The stadiums are a shitpile, the croatian league is weak, "best" club in croatia didnt even score a single goal in europe league group stage. Everybody is poor and leaving Croatia to search for jobs.
