Listen to today’s podcast for my full analysis and for alternative recommendations.
Topics Discussed:
04:54 - The complete mouth care system protocol
06:05 - Zellie’s Mints & Gums
10:17 - The Closys pre rinse
14:43 - Crest Cavity Protection Toothpaste
16:54 - Listerine
20:00 - ACT mouthwash
22:54 - Negative impact of using this protocol
26:32 - Dr. B’s recommendations
26:57 - When using this protocol makes sense

@@__-zm5wr I have invited him to a discussion - a two or three way discussion could be ideal! But Dr. M does not know my "story" - why I developed this system to save my Mom's teeth - in the 1960s. I think he sees me as an opportunist or something. Only people who know my story understand that this all began at the start of my career because I knew early loss of teeth - in women - was linked to early onset dementia (which was prevalent in my family). My mom was 45 and told to have all her teeth extracted and dentures. Creating this system was to preserve my Mom's mental health. This has never been about teeth, conflict, or marketing products. We were successful with my Mom and she kept those teeth 50 years-till she died at 95 , and with minimal Tx over those years. (She eventually fell and died from the injuries and multiple surgeries). Seeing her success, I began suggesting this strategy in my office in the 1970s. I was able to see and be stunned by the effects and how these products worked. I have never received any payment from any of the companies - not even thank you! As Faculty at the University of Rochester I worked with a researcher involved in the xylitol studies of the 1970s. I suggested we replicate these studies at the U of R, but every year my grant application was denied. Eventually in frustration I left the University, took my 401K and started Zellies xylitol company - to teach about xylitol directly to the public. This was the 1990s (before the internet, social media or Amazon). My husband was furious with me - told me it was a waste of time. But I was lucky to get my product into Wegmans Food Stores - and was invited to teach oral health to their employees during the 2000s. I kept up with the science of oral health - which is a love and passion and became the founder of AAOSH about that time. I have many, many dental friends who support my system, understand my passion, and know my desire to help people enjoy oral health. I was the dentist whose "system" helped Bristle testing company's heal their Sjogren's patient ("Wendy") to eliminate strep mutans and develop a wide diversity of oral bacteria, and for the first time in her adult life - enjoy oral health! Current fears about Listerine and the use of mouthwash with regard to Nitric Oxide are not correct. The study headlines were bad and some studies were later disproven. The hype is not clinically substantiated. Thousands of people have used my system - many of these people for over 40 years. Within this group are people, like me, who have not even had a dental cleaning in all that time. We have tested the diversity of healthy bacteria in our mouths. We all enjoy stable, sustainable oral health. This is pretty remarkable as we are aging, yet maintaining perfect oral health. I believe all dentists should at least be intrigued by this.

A couple of quick tips that work for me: If I eat or drink something acidic, especially close to the time to brush teeth, I'll swish a mouthful of water with a pinch of baking soda. Also, I bought a bag of pure xylitol crystals and after a meal i take a small spoonful and swish it around for about a minute. Cheaper than buying gum or mints, and tastes good too!

I just received the kit. I was excited till I saw Chlorine… Do you know how bad Chlorine is for any humanbeing? It goes directly into your system via our mouths. I left the city to live in the countryside where there is only well water and my well water is amazing! I have no chemicals or chlorine in my well water. And now I’m looking at the ingredient of everything and I want to cry. I should had looked and investigated better. Anything we put into our mouths goes into our blood stream and obviously our whole digestive tract. Even if it fixes one thing it causes other things. I have a handicap/ special needs son and I can not use this kit I got today on my child. I will have to find another way. 🤦🏻‍♀️

@mark - I just started this protocol and my teeth feel the most healthy it has ever been. I was concerned about using fluoride toothpaste, however my own dentist recommended a fluoride toothpaste as well ( Colgate total). Therefore, I don’t understand why you are so against this. Given it’s applied topically and not swallowed ( as you would with tap water with fluoride). I do have bleeding gums and my own dentist told me I need mouthwash to kill the bacteria. So I don’t know how you believe anyone with germs should not use mouthwash, to kill the bugs in the pockets? I feel your advice makes sense for those that have no issues with their teeth - however I don’t see it working for someone like me that has bleeding gums. One point I do agree with is that everyone has a different profile - I have not had many cavities ( 2 in 45 years). Therefore I do wonder if a fluoride mouth wash is required in my case. That said, if a many have used the system and it’s worked - what’s the problem?

26:43 I actually recently switched from this protocol to one closer to your recommendations. The reason being is that we didn't evolve with mouthwashes so it seems counterintuitive to me that we all of a sudden need them. Not using mouthwash doesn't seem to have had any negative or positive effects.

She says not to add the flavoring to the Closys rinse. It's the flavor packet that has the ingredients you object to in it, I think. Certainly the sucrolose which is not in the rinse itself. The rinse does taste a bit chlorinated on its own. Thanks for that info.

Thank you for reviewing this. I've been having much confusion between you and Ellie mouth care system I'm using her system but including night time flossing and during the day time I use coconut oil as a quick swish. I've been doing this for 3 weeks now. For the first time I have teeth sensitivity on all my right side teeth. I'm going to have to go back to hydroxyapatite for the sensitivity and short coconut oil pulling and daily flossing until my sensitivity hopefully improves. I would like you to address the gum massage technique she recommends for brushing.

Dr, Burhenne I know exactly who you are talking about and I totally agree with you. I fell for her hype and did try her “protocol” for only 2 days which irritated my entire mouth equal to having burned your mouth by eating something very hot. It gave me a very sore tongue, the roof of my mouth and all the inside of my cheeks. Needless to say I trashed everything and went back to my trusted toothpaste I have been using for years which DOES NOT irritate my mouth, also this dentist suggests not to floss because it is “bad” for you which I find absurd! I floss 2 to 3 times per day and also use my water pick 2x per day besides brushing 3x, I have been doing that for decades because I am one of those people that always has quite a lot of calculous buildup behind my lower front teeth. I would NEVER EVER not floss because that’s a good way to loose your pearly whites! I could kick myself for being so gullible but thankfully I came to my senses rather quickly by having a very sore mouth for 1 week after trying her “protocol”! 🥴

I go in for a three month check in to see if anything improved. I'm very careful with the ACT because it will stain teeth with dead plaque. I also added midday coconut oil and xylitol swishing. I also continue to floss once a day in the evening. I like to hear from people who both had success and failures with the routine. I don't believe in one size fits all protocol plus genetics plays a huge part in what we are prone to. Sorry you had bad results. Wish me luck.

I'm in recovery from the system too. I have candida on the tongue and needed an emergency deep cleaning. She insists her protocol will remove calculus under the gums which is an out right lie. Only a mechanical removal by a hygienists can remove cement like tarter under the gums. She also makes the false claim that Listerine doesn't kill good bacteria which is a lie as the company itself says it kills both good and bad when I asked. She has some good advise on food and how to eat but all her protocol is based on antidotal evidence and no real studies.

went in to the dentist yesterday after using her protocol for three months. I had a hard time with the toothpaste so it was a rough start. No change in most places but the pockets got worse in the back. I'm getting a deep clean today and another one on the other side next week. She says that her system will remove tarter and calculus under the gum if I stick with it for six months to a year. I can't take that chance so I'm getting it removed today before I end up at a periodontist with bigger problems. I can't imagine what ingredients she thinks can do that in these products. I changed my diet and my teeth didn't have any plaque or tarter on them outside of the gum area. I just need to address the area subgingival.

Visiting and having a conversation with an experienced and thorough dentist will always be what's right for any individual's oral health. Whether someone uses 5 mouthwashes a day or uses hydroxyapatite toothpaste should be discussed with a professional that can assess and understand their situation. It would be nice if there were more competent dentists involved in the KZfaq/online community that can share their experiences and knowledge. I find both of you incorrect in some ways and correct in others, it's frustrating to want to learn more about this topic but have such conflicting opinions from qualified professionals. But then again, that is the world of modern dentistry it seems.

@dr.elliephillips Thank you. My dogs eat a carnivore diet and have great teeth at 15 and 16. They get raw meaty bones and chunks of meat which require them to chew. I also brush their teeth with coconut oil or ghee. As far as TEEF, I would caution people that one formula contains sodium bicarbonate which alkalizes stomach acid. This is very problematic for dogs, especially those that consume raw meaty bones which require stomach acid to digest them properly. It is also bad for dogs with kidney issues. I believe they started making a formula without sodium bicarbonate. Most dog dental problems are a direct cause of eating kibble which is high in carbs and causes the healthy mouth bacteria to become pathogenic. Fix the diet and you fix the teeth.

I am about ready to stop because of this video as well as Andrew Huberman who thanked both of them for their input toward his podcast, but at the end of the day, he came out strongly against alcohol rinse. Every day we are learning new things about microbiome, gut and oral, and the bad as well as good bacteria. It makes sense that killing all bacteria is not smart. Dr. Ellie, why use alcohol? And, is Mark correct that there are pesticides in the rinses? Mark, I thought I heard you say that nano hydroxyapatite was also good for whitening, not just cavity prevention.

I followed this protocol for about three months until I started to get dark staining inbetween my teeth. I stopped but then developed little bumps all over my tongue and a dry rough area in the middle of my tongue . After about 6 weeks I got a thick white coating on the front half of my tongue and on my palate. The roof of my mouth felt numb and slightly swollen and I would get a sherbet-like taste in my mouth. After about a week, it shed but would return and then shed again. I also have a cavity that needs filling. I am taping my mouth at night and using xylitol to try and keep my ph steady. I’m dry brushing in the morning and using Boka toothpaste at night after flossing. It’s slowly improving but I really regret doing it.

Aren't detailed discourses like this supposed to be presented at Functional/Homeopathic/other like minded dental conferences? Or have dental conferences also become so corrupted and jaded that truthful White Papers that go against the narrative never see the light of day? I understand that certain chemicals at certain concentrations have a toxicity, but I don't think extrapolateing from different chemical compounds gives us the most accurate or complete picture. If the commercial products which Dr Phillips suggest are all so toxic wouldn't we see a trend of higher tumors of the gums, tongue and mouth? The products even as Dr B stated have been around for decades. If the protocol is compounding and accelerating this toxicity level wouldn't there be even more cancers? Why do so many people give testimony that the results give a positive outcome and are so repeatable? If there is specific research that shows the specific commercial products are dangerous and the research findings are reproduceable then let's see those papers. Otherwise we may leave ourselves open to being accused simply spreading FUD (Fear Uncertainty & Dought). Hopefully we are seeking the full and complete truth and best way to care for our oral health. Also, our family buys products from both of the Dr's.

This is Dr. Ellie I originally licensed as a dentist n the UK, worked in Switzerland where I learned about gum massage, xylitol, and nutrition for oral health in the 1970s, Worked in my own office for 10 years - where I formulated this preventive system through patient education in a high decay population, including older adults and special needs children and adults. I came to the US and specialized as a Pediatric Dentist and a Cosmetic dentist (AEGD) at the University of Rochester where I worked under the researcher who conducted the original xylitol studies in the 1970s. Frustrated with the lack of interest in effective prevention I left the University in 2004, and went into Private Practice. I have been a dentist for 50 years. In 2002 I founded a xylitol company called Zellies ( before Internet or Amazon etc.) I have a lifetime of educating patients, pregnant mothers, and health professionals. Judge me - but I'm not fake. I felt it was important to reply to you because this seems a pretty challenging community - who for some reason think I am out to gain something. I developed this effective system of care early in my career and share it simply because it is so effective for people who have ongoing dental problems. I get nothing from the companies. I actually do what I do as a mission of love.❤‍🩹

Please confess your reckless lack of attention to detail and review the Ultrasensitive. Also, you said that you were going to recommend alternatives to each product. But you didn't recommend a toothpaste. Please recommend a toothpaste and cite the percentage concentration of nano-hydroxyapatite contained in it. I've heard 10% is the minimum needed. Boka only has 2%. Then just fyi, the timestamps on your video are off. All these errors are due to lack of attention to detail and taken together they severely impair your credibility. It makes me think that if I went you your office you might drill and fill the wrong tooth.

For PETE'S SAKE who/what are we to believe? Ya'll should be ashamed of yourselves! Trying to one-up each other just like children on a playground. You do need to pay closer attention to the products that Dr. Ellie recommends. She specifically mentions them. You're critiquing the wrong ones.

this sounds a lot like an oral health care routine i tried last year. I wound up with brown stains on my teeth. i was horrified! fortunately my dental hygienist was able to remove the stains. I immediately threw all the products out and kissed this routine goodbye.

It’s the cetylpyridinium chloride that stains your teeth! Used to use it all the time and always got the brown stains…I’ve stayed away from it since then because of that, but this video has now reinforced that idea in my mind even further.

Wow, I thought it was tea and coffee stains. I think I need to drop this protocol right away!

@@joanroth8594 The cetylpyridinium chloride is in the ACT so you could do what I did and switch that out for the therabreath fluoride which doesn't contain that ingredient plus it has xylitol in it.

I am glad someone is finally exposing the toxicity of her recommendations. I eat a carnivore diet. No plaque, no gum disease and all I do is brush with plain water and floss.

He is completely messed up with his evaluation. A quick call to me or better yet a conversation would so help him. 50 years of clinical experience should interest him.

Now that I've watched your entire video, I have to say I agree with absolutely everything you've said. What is so confounding is that this dentist whose protocol you are reviewing actually talks about the necessity of supporting the healthy microbiome of the mouth, and how that helps to keep the s. mutans controlled, among other benefits. So WHY in God's green earth is she recommending a protocol that defies her very recommendations?!? It makes no sense at all!! And she has said verbatim that these products such as Listerine and the Crest toothpaste do not disturb the healthy microbiome. This is an utter non sequiter!

Mark does make errors here....these companies sell more than one formulation of product and Dr. Ellie is very specific about the need to use the correct formulation to achieve the 'synergy' she claims works. But, although in a time gone by this might have been the best you can do, I think it might be dated. Just make the gut parallel....we knew so little 5-10 years ago, about good bacteria and boosting the immune system, etc. Who knew about sour kraut! lol

You dropped the ball on this one Doc. The Closys recommended by this woman does not contain cetylpyridinium chloride. Nor does it contain fluoride. Seems like you have a personal vendetta or something. At least get the facts straight.

He misrepresents and denigrates Dr Ellie's protocol but doesn't offer anything to do instead and he doesn't respond to the fact that her system WORKS!! Why doesn't he talk to her?? Until such time, respect lost.👎

From what I can tell he got only one product wrong (the closys she recommends is the ultra sensitive not the regular) everything else was correct. He offered better alternative and method too. So no misrepresentation but an honest critique which we should all be grateful for. That said I'd love to see a discussion between them. You have to admit 3 mouth washes yet no flossing is weird.

Kind Sir, where is your research is ANY better AND your not willing to do a round table? Sounds like you're jealous and upset you didn't come up with this. Way to be a grown man hater.
