How is it possible that, in a culture so obsessed with wellness, we’re dealing with more chronic disease, mental illness, and addiction than ever before?
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Gabor Maté about his new book, The Myth of Normal, and our crisis of separation, disconnection, and loneliness. They discuss the link between addiction, our profit-driven culture, and trauma and the first steps we can take toward health and healing.
Dr. Gabor Maté is a renowned speaker and bestselling author and is highly sought after for his expertise on a range of topics, including addiction, stress, and childhood development. Dr. Maté has written several bestselling books, including the award-winning In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction, When the Body Says No: Exploring the Stress-Disease Connection, and Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates and What You Can Do About It and has coauthored Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. For his groundbreaking medical work and writing, he has been awarded the Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian distinction. His latest book, The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness & Healing in a Toxic Culture, was just released. His next book, Hello Again: A Fresh Start for Parents and Their Adult Children, is expected in 2023. Gabor is also a codeveloper of a therapeutic approach, Compassionate Inquiry, now studied by hundreds of therapists, physicians, counselors, and others internationally.

This man is a genius, I am a psychologist and I am still learning, as all of these are very complex and other scientists are still learning. I am fed up of the‘professionals’ who don’t know and they find me as a challenge, as a treat, just because I know that they don’t know and many don’t care and their enabling people around them in drug and alcohol projects even that are toxic. It is a real pleasure to listen and learn from Dr Maté. I hope that one day I will be able to study with him and go to his conferences.💪😊💕

Children don't know when an adult is damaged. They think that adults are strong, wise, mature and in control. When a parent abandons or is otherwise unable to love a child, that child assumes the fault is his. That child assumes she is unworthy of being loved. When I was in my 40's, my dad admitted to me ( his exact words) " I was cruel to you when you were a child “. I knew what he meant. He ignored me. He neglected me. He was embarrassed by me. Ashamed of me. Sometimes he pretended I was not there so he didn't have to admit to friends and acquaintances that this effeminate boy was his son. Yet I watched him be a loving father to my brother. I watched from the shadows. I have spent my entire life time seeking acceptance from other men. But no amount of approval or acceptance has eased the emptiness. I trust no one's love. Sometimes I wonder why this one man's opinion of me has been so important. After all, he's just another person on the planet... nothing special. But I didn't understand that when I was a four year old, a six year old, or when I was on the edge of budding sexuality and was left clueless and alone to figure out what was happening to me. It was quite a moment when he said that he'd been cruel. It only affirmed what I already knew. I just didn't ever realize that he knew it too and was able to admit it. That was something, at least. But it was too late.

Thank you Dhruv and Gabor for this wonderful discussion. Childhood trauma is major subject for sensitive person to unravel his present, know the core of your self is created by which powers and what impact it has on you.,.. if you want to live in present and get freedom from fixed patterns and inner pain..... I believe exactly knowing the source of your emotional baggage, the conviction about childhood hurt and acknowledging that tough period you have went through is healing. The true compassion for yourself comes when you understand the source of your pain and acknowledge it, and that is the real healing..... like real reconnect to your real core.. like integration at your core level.

The pushback to the idea that our society/economy is toxic to our psychic well-being was huge 40 years ago. Now it’s politically impossible for women to be fully supported in pregnancy and beyond but not get treated like breeding cows. Employment has enslaved women too, but it has given her independence.

You don’t *think*…. U use ur thinking. He uses facts, research and proof. U use assumptions. By the way this method of not picking up children is extremely widespread. But he is specifically referring to John Peterson’s advice of not picking up your child. U would learn more if you actually try to understand then assumption based on ur thinking rather thats facts

I sleep trained both of my boys. The half hour they cried the first night was them learning how to sooth themselves and put themselves to sleep. They were/are healthy as kids and great sleepers. They only time they slept with us was if they were sick or if we were away.

Your kids trained themselves in half an hour to soothe themselves! A skill that takes the whole of childhood and sometimes adulthood to successfully do.
@vivi68
@vivi68 Жыл бұрын
@@testtest2609 they cried no more than a half hour the first night maybe less. After that when I put them in their cribs to sleep, they slept. No whining, no excuses for staying up, no crying, no climbing out of their cribs, they slept all night. They only time they would sleep with us is if they were sick with high fevers or if we were away and that was more for me to keep them close so I could keep close. I was a stay at home mom, there when they left for school, there when they came home, there if they needed to come home if they were not feeling well, etc. Taking a lifetime to learn to soothe oneself maybe because they were smothered. To say sleep training is neglect is such a judgmental and ignorant statement. You have to take into consideration the whole of the situation. I admire and follow Gabor’s work but to call it neglect without considering the whole picture is inaccurate and judgmental. No one parenting style is perfect so don’t be an idiot.

The sloganeering that obscures the truth! Too much bad times creates "weakness".... literally the definition of trauma and trauma has been shown to scientifically (Feliti study) to be behind physical diseases like cancer, heart disease, obesity, etc. and mental health. Way to miss the point, intentionally or not.
