Athena being the BBEG of the entire franchise with each trilogy being about a different setting is one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard.

Athena might have connection with the rift, we will see if she has or not. but she has nothing to do with prophecies in greek myths, Apollo is the god of prophecies, he deals with them. In the gow series in the novels she has been give the ability of foresight, most of which she does based on her analysis using her intelligence and wisdom.

I mean there are alot of inconsistencies between the greek/Norse lore and GOW. it's possible the writers intentionally or not wrote the story so Athena was more about weaving prophecies to manipulate fate. I can't speak for what the devs actually wanted but still.

@@secondarytrollaccount yes the game devs take creative liberty to change the characters. like they made her weaker than she's in the myths (unless you wanna talk about hope) or that she was asexual in myths, but in gow she fell in love with kratos initially. while in myth she doesn't deal with prophecies, in gow she can altho when she was alive until then she didn't indulge in them.

@@iug5672 around the ending of god of war 1, you can read the god of war 1 and 2 novels, it heavily implies she's having feelings for him, the way she acts and a lot of dialogues. which was also confirmed by the developers in a promotional god of war 2 video, that she's was in love with him. video name is "God of war 2 from myth to legends: gods and goddesses", check when they talk about Athena.

@@iug5672 also speaking of myths, she isn't asexual actually in the myths, the greek didn't really recognize it. Virgin goddesses was about purity for them. she had taken a vow of chastity, of zeus made her take that vow, or the fates made her to remain pure forever. We haven't explicitly seen in myths that she has shown romance, but there are a few stories that may imply she had feelings for someone. But it isn't confirmed either way. In god of war we know Athena was in love with Kratos, but also they never got spicy in bed, so she was still pure. So there isn't much difference.

Off topic theory i was thinking bout it all night. So you know how when athena appears while kraros is retrieving blades of chaos. When she says "Pretend to be everything you are not.... Teacher, husband" kratos does not give any expressions, but then she adds "... Father" And kratos immediately looks at her, means he is afraid that athena and greece still exists and they know everything about him, this also raises a question that how did athena know that kratos had a son? Idk if it makes sense or not but it was in my mind the whole night

Check this out In gow ragnarok if you choose to do the quest of freeing the creature in alfheim's desert with atreus mimir says “ great GEFJON'S GHOST” gefjon is a goddess but not a GHOST and in a real poem odin says to loki that she knows the fate of every man even him self And mimir says that the voice told odin to get the mask across the seas and he got it from the silent matron herself Witch gefjon was a matron but ghost is something unique to her in the game so may be a goddess that is a great ghost = ATHENA In wiki “Gefjon glosses the goddesses Athena and Vesta” Maybe I’m wrong but her being described as “great ghost” is weirdly specific.

I think that if the next game was set out to be an atreus spinoff then I will tell you all a theory ... Angroboda gives atreus the marbles that contains giants soul right.. when we finished gow 2018 we visit jotunheim there is so many giants body right ... what if atreus travel jotunheim and transfers these souls to them but something went wrong and one of the giants attack atreus and he summons fenrir like tear a portal of the realm and he ended up in another pantheon .... And gow 6 kicks off let me know in the about this

But angroboda told atreus all the bodies are fake to confuse odin if he ever makes it to jotunheim, so the giants are scattered throughout the realms and atreus told kratos at the end that he needs to find them

I believe this theory is mostly true, however I would like to address some holes in this: Firstly, I don't think Athena would take Odin's death by Kratos as a given, as the prophecies that she would have given to the giants (according to this video) predicts that Kratos dies in Atreus' arms. I do however agree that she would've wanted Odin dead, I just believe he wasn't supposed to die by Kratos' hands or Kratos wasn't supposed to live. Secondly, as said by someone else in this comment section, Athena isn't the goddess of prophecies. That title and power belongs to Apollo. So I do not think that would be the reason she gave prophecies to the giants, if she did. If she did give the prophecies to the giants, I think the power of the higher plane of existence would have been the catalyst. Lastly, Kratos changed his fate because of his choice to open his heart, as advised by Faye. Cory even said in an interview that the moment Kratos changed his fate was when he told Atreus to open his heart, and chose to save the innocent. I do not think Athena being behind all this would be the right move, as that would only make Kratos' character development obselete. Of course, I could just be thinking about this too much, but this is a good theory otherwise

Heimdall may have never lost a fight before Kratos but his interactions with Thor and his comments about Dragons implies there are multiple ways to beat Heimdall (making attacks too widespread to dodge as implied what Thor could do) or being simply too fast and/or strong for Heimdall to dodge. His foresight does provide increased combat effectiveness but if he's outclassed or his senses are overloaded enough he can be beaten

@@DTheCritical it would be interesting to see Atreus returns after a long journey but instead of being himself he was somehow benign controlled by the mask(possibly Athena). Also I believe that Kratos may have to return to his old ways at some point. He’s such a complex character that it would be too much of a waste to have him be static within the next game. (Especially since Atreus may not be with him at that point)

i somehow already got the idea that athena is actually the ultimate antagonist of god of war...and after your theory my believe of this fact is getting strong....ragnarok was supposed to give answers of questions arose in gow 2018 but its own questions arose and bigger ones than before... considering you theory, athena kinda failed at her mission of ruling the higher existence alone as, i think, thor is also there cuz he died for a self less act too and his body disintegrated unlike others(odin and heimdal)

She didn't open it. The rift appeared after Odin killed Ymir, she wants to close to prevent Odin from accessing its secrets.

@@abdbaythat makes even less sense. There’s no evidence to suggest the rift leads to the ascension realm. And even if it did Odin couldn’t get in as it’s been confirmed the only way to enter is for a god to perform a selfless act. If anything the only person getting in there is Freyr so that just fucks up this theory even further. Her plan literally caused another god to sacrifice himself to save other therefore allowing him to become ascendant like her

So the truth wasn’t revealed. This is just a fanboy theory that doesn’t even make sense. Athena isn’t omnipotent cause if she was she would’ve known that Kratos would betray her by the end of God of War 3 and relying on a mask and Odins obsession just to have Kratos kill him to prevent him access when we clearly know that the only way to enter is by a god performing a selfless act then there’s no reason for her to worry about him becoming ascension. This theory just falls apart like a Jenga tower made out of wet toilet paper when you use your brain for literally two seconds
