My Filipina fiancé can’t swim well and is also apprehensive in the water. But her 7 year old daughter lives by the beach during the summer with her uncles who are fishermen. She loves the water and knows how to swim. She also turns very dark because she and her friends are always on the beach or in the water with her.

Learning how to swim is like putting a puzzle together. There are multiple pieces that have to fall into place. Learning to have your face underwater without holding your nose. How to flutter your feet and hands to produce thrust. How to get your body straight and horizontal. How to breath in a relaxed manner depending on your type of swimming so you remain buoyant. Speaking of the type of swimming it helps to make your initial swimming success in a style you find the easiest. For some people it's the doggy paddle or the breaststroke because your head is always out of the water. For some people it's swimming underwater as they push themselves off the walls of a pool and then as they glide through the water they can extend their glide by experimenting with kicks and hand movements. Speaking of pools they can really help because you can stay in the shallow end where you have the confidence that you can always stand up. (As you know it's paramount you always have a buddy with you.) Another way to learn is to master treading water. You stay afloat in one spot. In the beginning your movements are jerky and you expend a lot of energy. Eventually though, especially in salty ocean water, you'll be able to remain relatively still with very little movement and tread water indefinitely without using any energy. Bonus Fact: Some Filipinos have developed the ability to hold their breath underwater for extended amounts of time. Especially groups like the Bajau who have a spleen (which holds a red blood cell/oxygen reserve like other marine mammals) that's 50% larger than the rest of humanity. Look it up. It's fascinating.

Really brave Rubeauti. You did exactly the right thing. If you're somewhere that scares you, take an interest in your surrounding, something around you to distract you. I remember back when I was rock climbing, I got engrossed in the rock around me, stopped me thinking about how high I was! I think you could be right about the general attitude to water, we had swimming lessons at all the schools I went to, I'm sure it saved many lives. 🌹❤

I had swimming lessons & spent much time in fairly-shallow waters & never learned to swim this way; & when I finally learned to swim it was in 35' water; & this is how I learned within minutes using various steps or stages: • Step/Stage-1: I put on swim fins for the first time & I held onto a stable platform that jutted out over the water just above sea level in a calm harbor (no waves & no rip-tides to deal with - & it was in saltwater which helps with bouyancy). Note: I used the stepping board on the stern of a docked motorboat sitting in a harbor as my stable platform Step/Stage-2: While holding my arms out horizontally forward with my hands gripping the stable platform, & while keeping the rest of my body vertical, I moved each foot as if I was walking on tippy-toes. I altered the speed of doing this & noticed how the fins gave me lift (& the amount of lift varied by speed) • Step/Stage-3: I experimented by bending my knees more when "walking" like this & I even experimented with frog kicking (drawing my heels up towards by butt & then thrusting my feet outward & downward & back together again & then repeating this for awhile). The first bent-knee experiment was relaxing & the frog-kick experiment gave me a lot of thrust Step/Stage-4: Keep within easy arm's reach of the stable platform, I let go of the platform & repeated all of the above "walking" & frog-kicking variations while I swooshed my arms & hands back & forth together horizontally (& with the rest of my body still vertical). And by varying arm speed & shifting hand positions like using oars I found that I could add to my bouyancy & even turn to my left or right (& even a bit forward or backward) Step/Stage-5: Staying fairly-close to the platform I then experimented with swimming with my body being diagonal - nearly horizontal (this brought my head down closer to the water, so I learned to keep my lips closed until I blew out air as my mouth cleared the water, & found it useful to be closed-lipped & ready to blow out as ripples came in towards my face*) Step/Stage-6: I then swam underwater* * = Note: When swimming underwater I wasn't always aware of what was above me as I surfaced - & I surfaced near the harbor's rocky shoreline where fuel & garbage floated, along with a marlin's head which startled me & I breathed in when I ought to have been blowing out (& this directly led to my having to get my tonsils removed). 😖 Good luck learning (& do your best to stay safe, like bring attentive swimmers capable of saving you along with you - & avoid contaminated areas). 🤿😎👍

You can get a "shorty" wetsuit with short pants and short sleeves. Even the thin 2mm size gives you a lot of flotation since the neoprene fabric traps air inside it. A full wetsuit is so buoyant that it's very difficult to dive to the bottom. That's why many snorkelers will wear a weight belt.

I love the water, and I can swim, but it takes so much effort because my bone and muscle density make it impossible to float. That's why I took up scuba. Take your time and get comfortable with it. Good to see you 😊

I love to snorkel and have done so most of my life (swimming lessons in Australia are also free and part of the school curriculum). Interestingly, the majority of people who snorkel in Oz wear fins (flippers), this increases the power from your legs and the bonus is that you can be vertical in the water and a few gentle kicks keeps your head out of the water (so way less scary about drowning for weak swimmers). It was magic to see you in the water and it is so beautiful (especially the host 😉). I really enjoy seeing your new location and believe that you do as well.

Great video, Rubeauti, I'm surprised and impressed. First of all you are so beautiful and I'm still loving the short hair. I did not know that about your people not liking to swim. Brought up on islands, one would just assume it was a rite of passage to learn to swim. You didn't seem like you were at all afraid of the water. Did you try learning in a pool first. I never liked to swim in the ocean because of it's size and unpredictable ocean floor and what you might step on. The defined space of a pool with designated depth markings made it a lot easier for me. My own fear of the water came from my childhood. My dad dropped me off at a YMCA when I was 7 or 8. A scared little boy not at all comfortable with strangers or crowds and here I was in this big building not knowing what to do.Not a good experience at all. Thank you taking the time to make this video and share you experiences. 😍😍😍

Simple way to learn in several steps....get access to a pool....work in shallow end to reduce fear of water and for safety to stand as/when needed......while standing several times dip your head under the water several times to get used to head in water and reduce fear....use fingers over nose at the beginning then no fingers as you get breathing techniques down.....grab edge of pool and kick legs while holding edge and stretching body out.....toughest one is getting arms going so practice arms in swimming motion then incorporate while kicking...it might take a bit of time to get coordinated and used to moving head correctly in water...have someone film you daily to see improvements.....within a week you'll have it and can then begin to graduate to deeper end of pool...as you get the rhythm better and confidence your fear of the water will leave you. Good luck non swimmers. 👍 👍

My (and I'm sure many others) approach to teaching a person to swim is: 1) Convince the student that they won't drown if they know how to float. Floating comfortably is key, because once a person realizes that it takes little or no effort to float, no matter how deep the water is, they don't need to struggle in the water. People mistakenly believe that they have to move the correct way in the water and if they don't, they'll drown. No. The key is to take a fairly deep breath (for lean people; not necessary for people with more body fat) and hold it, and lie face down in the water (initially in very shallow water) stretched out. Lift or turn head when you need to breathe. Exhale a bit, inhale a bit, and put head back down. Once the person has done this for as long as it takes them to feel comfortable and realize they aren't going to sink, move on to floating on back, and vertically, etc. After this has gone on long enough that the student is comfortable and confident of their floating skills, introduce leg or arm motion for propulsion. If they get tired, stop moving and float to rest. And so on to teaching various strokes. This method worked on my Filipina girlfriend and now she doesn't care how deep the water is.

This makes me want to bring Red Cross swimming lessons to the Philippines. At the very least, everyone needs drownproofing. I went snorkeling in Thailand and could not understand how anyone could drown in salt water, but I am from near Lake Superior. (No one drowns in Superior - you have about three minutes before hypothermia takes you down.)

There were not any pools at the schools I went to. Our parents gave us lessons. Only my next younger brother and I learned to swim. My youngest brother wouldn't go in water any deeper than his knees. We swam in creeks, rivers and lakes. We lived several hundred miles from the ocean. I have lived a different state for several decades now. I am a 30 minute drive to Atlanta ocean. Floating in saltwater is easier because of the salt. Take it slowly, you will get better each time.

I just knew that most Filipinos don’t know how to swim and I am shocked. I am a Filipino myself and all my family members and relatives (except the small kids) know how to swim. When I went traveling with a group of friends, I only encountered about 3 out of 10 who cannot swim. I guess I am just lucky to be raised and be friends with people who can. I lived in a bubble so I am shocked when I recently found out many doesn’t know how.

Then he took me into the deep on a air mattress when I was 10 years old, flipped me off of it and took off hollering Swim or Drown. 😱. I learned instantly. As a teenager I was able to earn my Senior Lifesavings Certification from a Red Cross Instructor. It paid off, I have saved 4 people from drowning, 1 person twice due to having a stroke in the pool.

For the longest time I thought all filipinos knew how to swim. Before coming to the US I spent most my time in the ocean. Day,night, sunny, and especially when its raining me and my friends were always in the ocean swimming. My family and the people in our village were all fisherman's in the Visayas so I guess it was only natural for us to know how to. The beaches and the open sea was just as much home to us as the shelter we lived under, but I understand now that a lot of filipinos can't just wake up and walk 500 ft to the beach for a swim especially for the ones that lives in the city, but for some weird reason I atleast thought the majority of filipinos can swim. Also, I hope you overcame your fear. Man I miss seeing all those fishes, I miss chasing them around.😂

It is so unbelievable to me many Filipinos don’t know how to swim. Is it really true? I learned in Canada as a small child. I took swimming lessons for about 8 years. Swimming is such an important life skill.

Glad you’re making YT vids again. It’s been too long. Don’t like the long drawn out Twitch vids or YT live. Too rambling without much point or purpose. Keep it up. Thx.

I almost drowned in a river at 20 yrs old. So I started going to a free public swimming pool every evening after work until I taught myself. A number of times the lifeguards thought I was drowning but I wasn’t. It was my technique. Hahahahaha but I learned.

You are better swimming than you think you are it seems. Siquijor rocks and it’s a great place to see Nemo in real life! Keep at it Rubeauti and before you know it, you will be scuba diving (if you want).

When I was young, my uncle threw me out of his boat and was willing to let me drown! ....luckily some people were close by and they helped me! At that point I made it a point to practice until I learned! ...I have those kind of relatives Lol!!

I'd probably try vinegar for the hand. Looks pleasant. Any good scary stories about things that live in the sea?

@@Rubeauti Looks like something similar in Costa Rica, I once had. Vinegar acts like an astringent and reduces the bumps and irritation.

My Filipina swims like a fish. She is very natural, and she laughs at me, because when I go into the water I sink right to the bottom like a stone. I think many Canadians don't know how to swim because much of the year our lakes are frozen. Just my theory...

How to swim? Well first off this is true about not panicking. Salt water is the best for practicing floating. relax take long slow deep breaths and just chill soon you will see you are floating. Slowly let the air out breath calmly and you stay afloat. Many people can float and be sleeping. I am one of them that can fall asleep in the water even fresh water. I learned how to swim by the time I was I think 5 or 6 years old. My dad stood 6'2 and went up to his neck with me on his shoulders then threw me in the deep and and said swim or drown. I notice a lot of people swim with their fingers open. Bad choice. Cup your hands close tight your fingers and thumbs and keep them like that as you push off to your sides and you soon learn how to control where you wish to go side to side up and down and even can do under water flips. Now for the legs. Don't spread your legs like you are a frog. Keep them as if you are walking on dry land yet don't bend your knees but maybe now and then a little. Sort of like walking like a straight legged Monster how they walk stiff leg. Then as you paddle with your legs use your feet as fins like you see in videos of people snorkeling and deep diving with fins on. The most important thing to remember is do not try to breath under water. if you are in the water and it is deep and you are not sure what way is up let out a small amount of air and watch where the bubble goes that is going up. Then just swim up and when you reach the top get a couple nice breaths of air and relax. I have been on the swim team and the high dive team while in college. I also took the life guard course and taught others many others how to swim.

While readin the "cup your hands tight" I was literally doing it rn before writing this comment hahaha I'm serious I really wanna learn. But how can a child learn that way? I feel like if they do that here they will go to jail lol

@@Rubeauti LMAO well it happens that was how my Dad was taught and his dad so I think its a family thing lol. My mom feared water and she hated going to the beach because she would always see me go under water and not come up. There would be times my mom would panic and scream I didn't come up and the family would look for me. Then my Dad got to the point and had my brothers and sister stand in the water a great distance apart. dad told me to swim to as many of them as I could . I went under water and touched all my brothers and sister then I swam to my dad and came up with out breathing hard and said how did I do. At the time we were 8 brothers and sisters..6 boys 2 girls .

Hello Miss Rueauti, If you can walk you can swim, It is easier to learn in a pool first you don`t have the waves or tides, Remember your lungs are your flotation device Fill Them With Air and you will float, and Practice Practice Practice. You will be Surfing Soon:)) Thank You For Sharing!

Wow, it's so beautiful there. I'm from Oklahoma and learned how to swim in a brown water lake called Draper Lake. It wasn't school, it was the family men throwing kids in the water until the kids swim good enough to get out by themselves. 🤣We all swim like fish. Great vids pretty girl. Keep on swimming, the fun is when you can fly underwater. Just remember to hold your breath.
