The Great War

Күн бұрын

The protests that emerged in Russia this week are growing stronger and the Tsar is increasingly isolated until even his generals are pushing for his abdication. And after 300 years of Romanov rule, Tsar Nicholai II abdicates and when his brother refuses to take up the throne, the dynasty is no more. Meanwhile in the Middle East, the British are taking Baghdad effectively seizing control over a large area.

Arogon that is very untrue. The U.S in the first world war are not as half important as they say to be. Their effective presence in the war didn't really changed anything, as they took part only in the final actions on the western front. Of course their help to the allies in ammunitions and equipment was very welcome (that came with a price after the war tho) but the central powers were doomed to fail with or without the U.S

jonasnee Yes, aside from the naval blockade. food shortages, ever worsening economy and inflation, defensive warfare due to serious losses in 1916, A-H nearly being knocked out by Russia and the Ottomans losing control in Mesopotamia it sure is "looking good" for the central powers.

Nah, America was shit, there troops and officers were incompetent. They send only a small force. The Central powers lost, with the socialist revolution in Germany and the collapse of The Glorious A-H empire.

Arogon "America was basically the better equipped and trained version of Russia" False and false. First of all the USA was ill prepared for war when war was declared in 1917 and the army was nowhere near the size Russia's had been in 1914. Since Woodrow Wilson hadn't prepared to enter the war the American troops had to rely on French artillery pieces, tanks, planes and automatic weapons. "Better equipped" you say?? Better trained? Laughable. They had to rush the treaining to be somewhat ready for a serious entry in 1918. " the fact that we had been in four semi-modern wars (civil war, wars with the native tribes, the Spanish American war, and the Filipino rebellion) prepared us for a war like ww1," That's *utter nonsense* , you have not the faintest of clue what you're talking about. The first American troops made a poor showing of themselves when they first reached France and were *not* prepared for such a war, since they knew nothing of something of the sort. "if America hadn't been that fresh new belligerent, Germany may have won" Doubtful. Germany's economy, lack of resources and the fact it failed to win the bold and daring Spring Offensive of 1918 (before any significant number of American troops had arrived) - itself a bold gamble doomed to fail due to logistical issues going years back and the lack of oil, trucks, horses and troops. Even Ludendorff believed they could at best have reached a stalemate without the American entry. Listen, the American troops played their part and learned fast. But what you're stating is *utter nonsense* and it's depressing to read somebody talk about something they have no clue about.

Michael was a playboy of sorts. He was very much like Prince Charles in his younger days or other more modern examples of European Royalty causing both shame and embarrassment through their actions. When Alexei was thought to be dying a few years before the war, the first thing Michael did was to rush out and marry morganatically. Something he would have been unable to do if he was the direct heir. And thoughts about the rules and laws aside, it is a pretty selfish way to react to the expected death of your nephew, who just also happened to be the heir to the throne. The Romanovs needed someone of the caliber of a Peter The Great or Alexander II, if they were to survive this situation. That being said though, the Bolsheviks murdered him in 1919, along with several other Romanovs that they had access too in a long knives like episode.

something you should mention is that one of the main reasons why the army didn't protect the tsar was that he couldn't properly pay them anymore after banning alcohol to increase the discipline of his troops and thus losing 1/3 of the state's income.

Hello, first of all apologies for my bad English. I love their channel, it's very educational. I investigate a lot about the great war in the Middle East, I am from Venezuela and from here recruited brave warriors who fought in that war, I would like to know if they have information about Rafael de Nogales Méndez, important military officer of the Ottoman Army, fighting at the Gates of Caucasus of Egypt, gained recognition of the Kaiser and the title of Bey. The English army admired him, even invited him to dinner, and the British headquarters offered him a safe passage to leave Constantinople. Thank you, best wishes.

Hey Indy and the gang, recently started watching and you constantly surprise me with the attention to detail of your videos and unexpected dashes af humor (ie: the Bohemian Rhapsody out of the trenches bit). It sparked my own question for out of the trenches: what sort of humor or practical jokes did soldiers develop to break some of the tension, and were there any tall tales of humorous escapades that spread amongst the ranks?

I think I mentioned this before but Lenin said that everything was ready for a revolution except for the revolutionaries. Lenin was caught with his pants down(so to speak) and ended up taking a train provided by the Germans so he could get back to town. There's been a million books written about the revolution. I don't have anything new to add. I will say it was too bad that a movement with such potential degenerated into civil war and Bolshevik war communism and eventually Joseph Stalin. I saw the pictures of the Duma and the pictures of the workers and peasants soviet and every one of those people was mercilessly hunted down and either killed or sent to the gulag. Every single one of them. The Bolsheviks had and got what they wanted and they screwed it all up. And to cover up that fact they killed millions. You guys have a real talent for producing short presentations that will give you something to think about for the whole next week if not longer. Thanks for all your hard work!!!

Thank you for these great and very enlightening shows. I only became aware of this series, last month. While talking about the Balkan's battles, a picture of two soldiers with a small field piece. There appears to have a tank of some type attached by a tube to the breech area of the weapon. That was a new one on me, what is it? A weapon that uses gas for propellant, instead of gunpowder? Thanks again for one of the most professional series out there. Perhaps you can answer from "the chair." Take a bow, boys!

The Great War Thanks for the response. It was at 8:03 minutes into this video, about the 15th of March, 1917. The Ides of March, with the czar's abdication, how appropriate. If that doesn't help, I'll have to get my grandson to figure out out the part you want me to do. Aka, sending links, etc, can tax my limited amount of technological expertise. I again, say this series about WW1, has tripled my limited knowledge of "The Great War." Please tell "Indie" his performance is wonderful, and always entertaining. In parting, I do realize my KZfaq name is the wicked woodie, is a bit unique to say the least. The very logical reason of why my name is that, is the fact that I'm a Survivor of being impaled, through the neck into my my back by a two foot long 6 inch diameter tree branch. Yes, it was a very fun day, nothing says fun like a good old impalement. The only reason I bring this up, is Indie does seem to like pointing out unusual names on the requests that you people received. I hope this will answer that question. sincerely, Kevin "The Wicked Woodie"

Hey Indy question for out of the trenches. Are there any sources where I can find diaries, reports, newspapers, and other primary sources that I can use for my college project? Thanks! Love you're channel!

Google the Russian revolution. The internet is full of primary sources. I would also recommend "Nicholas and Alexandra" by Martin K. Massie. There's an extensive bibliography in that book. Plus if you like that sort of book its a really really good book. Check it out!

Kind of astonished at how many of the people mentioned in this video were born in the 1850s. Is there a name for that generation of Russian leaders?

We're not focusing on it for any specific reason though, it just happens that this event fell on this week of what we're looking at in our history class. Amazing channel by the way, it does history a great service and is an invaluable resource.

@drashko
@drashko 7 жыл бұрын
Tane was fighting the Ottomans in Macedonia since 1902 so he was pretty experienced in guerilla warfare and was kind of a badass. Actually the commies hanged him in prison (aged 73) after he shot the tenants of his mill for not paying the rent. :P

@TheGreatWar
@TheGreatWar 7 жыл бұрын
What makes you think we won't cover it?
@tommy-er6hh
@tommy-er6hh 7 жыл бұрын
You will cover it, but I assume you will end the channel at end of world war I to go back to doing other stuff - and the Russian Revolution goes on for years more, moreover it covers several areas not pertaining to WWI, so I think you will not cover those. That is why I think the RR need a channel like this to cover it all. I like this format.

They just need to create an affiliated channel and have Indy dressed as a Cossack, telling the tales of the revolution in a heavy Russian accent.

Hey Flo. Hey Indy. I had a quick question for y'all. Did Brusilov continue to/was he allowed to wear any of his Imperial medals or decorations after the fall of the Czar and the formation of the Soviet Union? I thought I recalled from his being made a general of the Soviet army from a previous special. Thanks for all of y'all's hard work.
