The Great War

6 жыл бұрын

The situation for the German Army on the Western Front looks grim, but in the East they have the upper hand and this week begin to put pressure on the Russians in Operation Albion - an amphibious landing operation in the Estonian archipelago. At the same time, the Battlefield at Passchendaele is turning into a muddy swamp.

Yes, Indy is pointing to an episode in the end which doesn't exist, yet. Unfortunately more than half the team is down with the flu at the moment, so it's a bit chaotic right now. The episode should be out on Monday though. Cheers.

I'm Canadian and know what's coming up at the end of this month here. What a waste. Currie wasn't happy about this battle and argued with Haig to not do it. When the Canadians were finished they captured all their objectives but with nearly 16,000 casualties. Exactly what Currie told Haig it was going to cost us. Again, what a waste

The otgao - Southalnd Battalion was just about wiped out. Even had there own shells landing on them. Guns had sunk in the mud and could not get the elevation. Some did to a steam they needed to cross which had turned into a small river. Hid against by the bank and returned across no man's land that night. Was just bloody murder. Should never have been sent out. I think they lost 700 that day.

"Everyone said I was daft to fight a battle in Flanders, but I fought it all the same, just to show them. The artillery sank into the mud. So I built a light railway. And that one sank into the mud. So I brought up supplies on donkeys. Those got ill, fell over, and then sank into the mud. But the battle will go on. And that's what you're going to be, men, the strongest fighting force in the history of England." -D. Haig, 1917

RIP Thomas Acheson Armstrong of the 33rd Battalion AIF from Queensland, Australia died this day in 1917. A Great uncle I never met. He was vapourized by a shell from German heavy artillery as he arrived just behind the front lines in preparation for futile assault in the mud. Like countless others in this crazy war he has no grave.

"My brother George was at Passchendaele. Nigh on half a million Allied troops died there, all for five miles of mud. I was at Kings Cross station when his regiment came home after the armistice. Most of them was carried off the train. I saw men with limbs missing, blind men, men who couldn't breathe properly 'cos their lungs had been shot to bits by mustard gas. While the nation celebrated, they was hidden away in big grey buildings, far from the public gaze. I mean, courage like that could put you right off your victory dinner couldn't it? They promised us homes for heroes, they give us heroes fit for homes." - the cockney Grandad in Only Fools and Horses in the episode "The Russians Are Coming" in series 1. Broadcast in 1981.

Questions for Indy and the team (at the end of a really long comment). Great work on this channel, I can't get over the level of detail that you guys give week by week across the world. This is extremely helpful to comprehend the complexities of the development of war between several nations. Everybody keeps asking if you guys will continue on with the series when WWII roles around, and regardless if you guys do, I hope this channel forever changes the portrayal of conflicts for years to come. My question is where do you guys get all your combat footage? How common was it for men to set up in a defense while one guy sits in the back and records them getting shot at, suffocating from poison gas, or even being in hand to hand combat? I believe pictures speak 1000 words, but every picture/frame of a video is 1000 words that help build a story. Again, great work with everything that you guys do.

I think Plumer picked his battles with Haig and the politicians did as well because as you also noted in your episode, The Germans were launching Operation:Albion and the political situation in Russia was dire. The Allies probably felt it necessary to bleed the Germans as hard as possible at Third Ypres because they would have been concerned about the Eastern front's collapse and the possibility of being overwhelmed or at least forced to negotiate terms from a position of having German troops on significant portions of Belgian and French soil. .

Hey Indy, as ever a great episode! I watch it every week. Just a small pointer for pronouncing the Flemish place names like Broodseinde: In Dutch/Flemish a double O is pronounced as the O sound in "clothes" or Moat/Coat, while a single O sounds more like the O in "clot" or "hop". Phonetically Broodseinde should sound like "broads-ainde" or brodes-ainde. The literal meaning of Broodseinde is "the end of bread" but I don't know why the Flemish named a place like that.

G’day Indy, once again very late: hopefully this will clear up some confusion you seem to have. Monash and his 3rd Division came under the command of Gough, not Plumer. Monash went to see Gough to get him to reconsider the attack, Gough turned him down and he wouldn’t take Monash up on his offer to view the front. At the time Gough was seen as one of the more careful Generals but his subservience to Haig was on clear display on the 11th/12th.

It should be noted that this battle on the 12/10/1917 would be the last time the Anzac fight as Anzac. The Australia would form the Australia army Core. New Zealand would turn down forming a New Zealand Core pointing out that with the size of New Zealand would make keeping a army core manned impossible in the long turn. Even taking the New Zealand up to a Division would mean New Zealand would only have manpower for a Division to 1921. But the New Zealand Division would be formed under Russell

1917 was such a shit year for the Australian troops in the Third Ypres offensive alone the Australians lost over 38 000 men and Australian confidence in British hit an all time low not seen since the Pozieres and Moquet Farm bloodbaths on the Somme in which the Australians lost 23 000 men in seven weeks of fighting all to capture a ridge. It is no wonder that the next year 1918 would lead to the creation of the Australian corps which was the largest corps of the British and Dominion armies as well as one of the best fighting forces of the war. However the Australian army remained a volunteer army throughout the war and as a result of this the Australian army was under strength from their actions on the Somme onward. It would get to the point that by the latter half of 1918 some divisions in the Australian corps would be down to the strength of a battalion. Yet despite being so cronically under strength the Australian corps which comprised only 5 divisions would destroy 39 German division capture nearly 10% of all german prisoners captured in the British sector and become especially feared by the Germans as elite shock troops. Also another side fact General Monash the commander of the Australian corps was probably the best General of the war with everyone from Lloyd George to Bernard Montgomery saying as much.

Divisions were never at battalion Strength ;) You meant Companies at near Platoon strength. Several battalions were broken up to reinforce others late in the war.

This is exactly why Pershing insisted in keeping US forces under his command. Did you folks have conscription and was there resistance? I've been to the War Memorial in Melbourne- a very moving place.
@mattmunn71

AIF was a fully volunteer army - perhaps one reason why it was so effective. The introduction of conscription was voted on by referendum twice during the great war, both time it was rejected. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_conscription_referendum,_1916 I have read that a major contribution to the no vote were the soldiers serving in France themselves. Many did not think it was fair to send men to fight in such conditions against their will.
@nathanberger7643
@nathanberger7643 6 жыл бұрын
No the Australian government never introduced conscription though they did have two referendums on the issue and as a result the AIF stayed the only whole volunteer force on either side for the whole war. Go to the national war memorial in Canberra for a better experience. Some have said that war memorial in Canberra is the beating heart of our nation.

Monash had American troops under his command for the Battle of Hamel, which he set for July 4 1918 in their honour. They were supposed to be attached to learn a few tactics from the experienced Australians , not take part in major battles. When Pershing heard about this almost at the last minute he tried to have the Americans withdrawn. Monash said in effect 'No Americans, no battle' and some American units which had not been withdrawn took part. Hamel was a brilliant set piece combining the use of artillery, infantry, tanks and air support, including the use of aircraft to drop supplies to advancing troops rather than burden them as had happened at the Somme. Monash planned to take 90 minutes to take the objectives. It took 93 minutes. Monash paid tribute to the performance of the until then inexperienced Americans. Their enthusiasm got the better of some of them and they got caught up in their own creeping barrage. Pershing made sure Americans were not placed under 'foreign' command again. These tactics were again used at the larger major offensive beginning with the Battle of Amiens spearheaded by the Australian and Canadian Corps on August 8, making an 8 mile advance in a single day and which Ludendorff called "the black day for the German army', which began the 'Hundred Day' advance ending in the Armistice. Monash like most of the Australian army was an amateur soldier, an engineer by profession and knew how to plan things. He built the electricity system for the state of Victoria after the war. Probably as an amateur, he was not burdened with outdated military doctrine which the professional soldiers were wedded to. His tactics were studied by the Germans when developing the Blitzkrieg.

I think most WW1 combat footage is staged or recreated. Most 'footage' and many classic stills from Verdun are from the 1928 film 'Verdun - Visions d'histoire' which was filmed on the battlefields with mostly veterans in the cast. Staged photos were also common in WW2 - google Sgt. Chetwyn 'Chets circus' for some stories behind some classic N.Africa stills.

I love this channel. I have a question about the great war film cuts and photographs you show along your explanations, are they precisely from the events you talk about, contemporary recreations for news and propaganda, randoms stuff that fit the script, all of the above? I suspect the answer is "all of the above", in any case, could you put some descriptions at the bottoms of photos and film cuts so we can know precisely what we are watching? History books usually do so for their photos and pictures. If that would raise the cost of producing the episodes too much than I think a general disclaimer in the dooblydoo would be appropriate. But I I said at the top I love this channel, I am a fan of history but knew very little about the first world war, for example I learned that Russia did not stop fighting right at the start of the revolution as I thought. I also learned that some of the Generals were worst that I thought, it's one thing to make mistakes because of the new type of warfare, but some seem unable to learn from their mistakes. But maybe I should not be surprised if the feedback they get from above is positive like in the case of Haig at this time in the conflict.
