Catherine demonstrates two best methods to cut back perennial blue salvia, or blue sage, in spring. Trimming salvia in late winter or early spring is an important part of caring for salvia plants to remove all of last year's growth before the new growth gets too tall. You can use a pair of pruners or your bare hands!
If you've ever wondered if you should cut back salvia, this video will show you exactly how to do it. Learning how to take care of perennial salvia plants is easier than you think!

Thank you so much, Catherine! Definitely helps during these times. I’m new to this. Do you recommend always wearing gloves? Thank you 😊

Hi Drew, glad this was helpful. I think wearing gloves is a personal choice. I choose to wear them most of the time because I find the skin on my hands get torn up otherwise. I like the type with the grippy coating on the palm and fingers. I usually buy a pack of ten pairs for the summer. Lots of my gardener friends choose not to wear gloves so they feel a closer connection to the soil. Makes for a rough handshake after a few decades, but the choice is totally up to you. Why not experiment with a couple different approaches and let us know what works best for you. :)
